In 1943 German internees in camp 3 (Victoria) decided to produce theatre productions of their German heritage to familiaize their children with their culture/to keep everyone busy/ interested/ and involved as a community. A comment was made that this exercise was very successful.Kept the German culture alive in the camp. Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, from 1940-1945. The ballerina & stand were made by persons unknown & given to Else-Lore while in the camp & was one of her childhood 'treasures'.Hand painted thin plywood decoration of ballerina inside a ring / circle, with wooden stand. Outer circle shape with insert for stand, cut out of ballerina posed inside. All carved from one piece of plywood. Circle is painted purple. Ballerina inside circle is plain plywood painted with mainly yellow, blue & white costume. Stand is flat disc with slot for ballerina cutout to insert into. Stand is painted gold. Else-Lore Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, with her mother from 1940-1945. Woodworking was popular amongst the internees and Werner Dehnel, another internee in camp 3, made the darning mushroom for Else-Lore, for darning socks.Wooden darning mushroom. Darker wood at top. Base (stalk) is of lighter wood. Both possibly varnished. Stalk has bevelled lines where it meets top. Base has 1939 Australian penny underside. The booklet prepared and printed by the German internees held in Camp 1, Tatura. The reproduction of the booklet was carried out on equipment in the office of the Camp Garrison, and copies of the booklet were made available to those internees within the camp and who were considered sympathetic to the German cause.The booklet tells the story of the internment of German Nationals in Australia from the German point of view. It also lists the names, internment number, dates of birth and capture, and the State where the capture took place. It also illustrate the fact that the Australian Authorities were willing to assist in the production of the booklet through the use of their office equipment.65 page booklet consisting of folded foolscap sheets with hand printed and printed material.
