In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. Paddy Slavin had a bakery at 118 Union Road, which had a rear exit onto Stirling Crescent. On the left is part of Paddy Slavin’s Bakery at 118 Union Road. The house with the hedge was that of Ada McBeath, organist for many years at the St Stephens Presbyterian and the Wyclif Churches, who lived at No.16 from 1900-1943. Phillip and Winifred Slavin are still listed in electoral roll in 1963 but by 1968 had moved to Gipps Street Collingwood, where he was still employed as a pastrycook. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 23 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. In the 1920s, the photographer travelled throughout Victoria, including on the west coast from Port Campbell to Port Fairy. Trips were presumably made by train and by foot. Lynda Tieman and her team at the Port Fairy Historical Society have tentatively identified a number of Henry Christian's photographs of Port Fairy, of which this is one. Newspaper article from the Melbourne Truth, dated Saturday, September 4, 1943. Front page article about George Frederick Heathcote Hanson, patents attorney, of Gipps Street, East Melbourne. Hanson had been reported missing after boarding a train to Sydney. He body was later found under briar bushes at Young. The Coroner's finding was that death had resulted from exposure, after taking the phenobarbitone. He believed he was not making a success of his business, and because he was unable to give his wife all the things he thought she deserved. Also printed are copies of letters he had written to his brother and his wife. In 1858 Hugh Wallace , undertaker and cabinet maker, moved from the Assembly Rooms at the corner of Gipps street, and opened his new Bank Hotel in Sackville street, next door to the grand Bank of Australasia. The hotel seems to have been the favourite meeting place for many of the sporting organisations of the time , including the Football, Rowing, Athletic and Gymnastics clubs . The second licensee was Thomas Pearson, who came to Belfast in 1855, working first for the Harbour master Capt. John Mills , then as the first Assistant Lighthouse keeper when it was built in 1859 . He was promoted to Lighthouse keeper 2 years later. The hotel continued in business with a further 8 licensees until it closed in 1918. Since which it has housed a diverse number of businesses, collecting a veranda along the way. It is still in use in Sackville street today. Quite a few of the Licensees of Belfast seem to have also had an interest in the Funeral business. Possibly, it was a good commercial undertaking, the same people providing them with a living selling spirituous liquor, and when they died of the effects , paid again for their burial. The population, which is mostly a mining one, reaches nearly 2,000 inhabitants, and are scattered about among the creeks and gullies of the neighbourhood. Weston Bate, 'A history of Brighton' 1962 informs us that in 1840 Henry Dendy, who was a farmer in Sussex England, paid 5,120 pounds sterling @ 1pound per acre for a 'Special Survey of Land in Port Phillip , Australia. Henry arrived in Australia in 1841 on the frigate 'York' with his wife, son, and three servants. He also took advantage of the Government Assistance of Free Immigrants for Survey Purchasers, to help on his estate and persuaded some Sussex men with their families to follow him. However when Dendy arrived in Port Phillip he found that LaTrobe and Gipps were trying to raise the price of land close to Town to 15pounds per acre. Dendy asked merchant J.B.Were to manage his affairs and they went ahead with plans to subdivide the surveyed land called 'The Brighton Estate' This area of land extended easterly from the Port Phillip Bay to East Boundary Road and from North Road to South Road in the Parish of Bourke Victoria. The Privy Council, England , decide that Henry Dendy could purchase the land at 1pound per acre. The series of 60 photographs that comprise the series was issued c. 1876 and reinforced a neo-Romantic view of the Australian landscape to which a growing nationalist movement would respond. Nicholas Caire was active as a photographer in Australia from 1858 until his death in 1918. His vision of the Australian bush and pioneer life had a counterpart in the works of Henry Lawson and other nationalist poets, authors and painters.Albumen silver photograph mounted on board.
