Henry Henty (b.1833-d.1912) was a successful businessman, and briefly a MLA for the seat of Grenville, Victoria in 1866. He was one of three sons of James Henty, and nephew of Edward Henty who is considered to be the first permanent European colonist to take up residence in Victoria. Henry Henty and his wife Marion Ann Henty (nee McKellar) had ‘Tarring’, Kew built for their family in 1872. The Henty family resided at ‘Tarring’ until the death of Marion Henty in 1919. ‘Tarring’ was then sold to Ruyton Girls’ School, and the School moved to the site, (now 12 Selbourne Rd, Kew) in 1920. ‘Tarring’ was renamed ‘Henty House’ in honour of its original owners. Marion Anne McKellar, the daughter of William Gilbert McKellar and Maria Jones was born in 1838. She married Henry Henty in 1859 and they had 9 children. She died in June 1919. Henry Henty and his wife Marion had ‘Tarring’, Kew built for their family in 1872. The Henty family resided at ‘Tarring’ until the death of Marion Henty in 1919. ‘Tarring’ was then sold to Ruyton Girls’ School, and the School moved to the site, (now 12 Selbourne Rd, Kew) in 1920. ‘Tarring’ was renamed ‘Henty House’ in honour of its original owners. Louisa Henty (1847-24) was the eldest daughter of Francis and Mary Ann Henty (nee Lawrence). Following the deaths of her mother and father, she inherited 'Fieldplace' in Studley Park, Kew, and 'Merino Downs' in Henty, near Casterton. Beatrice Charlotte Henty was born 25 December 1867, married Graham Frederick Blandy in 1927 and died on 5 March 1950 in Toorak. She did not have any children. Miss Beatrice Henty was the daughter of Henry and Marion Henty. Mr Henry Henty and his wife Mrs Marion Anne Henty (nee McKellar) had ‘Tarring’, Kew built for their family in 1872, and resided there until the death of Marion Henty in 1919. ‘Tarring’ was then sold to Ruyton Girls’ School, and the School moved to the site, (now 12 Selbourne Rd, Kew) in 1920. ‘Tarring’ was renamed ‘Henty House’ by Ruyton Girls' School in honour of its original owners. Ruyton Girls' School was founded in 1878, Miss Beatrice Henty attended the School before 1888. The photograph is dated c.1904. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Left to right: W. "Edward Henty" Considered by many to be Victorian Railways' greatest passenger locomotives, the 4 S class steam locomotives were the first 3 cylinder steam locomotives. This small class was built to run the Melbourne to Albury passenger trains and spent their entire careers on the North East line. They were built unstreamlined and ran in this condition until 1937. The streamlining modifications complimented the all new "Spirit Of Progress" carriages. The S class ran the "Spirit" until 1952 at which time the newly delivered B class diesels took over. Locomotive S302 - the "Edward Henty" was withdrawn in July 1954, having covered 1,446,468 miles. This item was given to the Historical Society in 1972, with the donor indicating that the spirit level belonged to the Henty family. The Hentys of Portland are regarded as the first permanent settlers in the State of Victoria (1834). Stephen Henty, with his brother Edward, was involved in the whaling industry in Portland. He also had shipping interests, operating a regular Western District shipping service (‘Champion’, ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Western’, ‘Edina’ etc) and a property ‘Cadnook’, near Harrow. Stephen Henty had close connections with Warrnambool not only because of his shipping interests but also because he was the brother-in-law of an early Warrnambool Harbour Master, Captain Frank Helpman. A spirit level was an essential tool for early settlers as they often built their own homes and constructed the roads nearby, needing to ascertain if what was being constructed was on level ground.It does not seem possible to establish whether this item belonged to the Henty family or to a Henty property. But in the Historical Society collection we have a piece of sheet music which includes the handwriting ‘Mrs Smalpaige, Cadnook’, ‘S. J. Henty’ and the date ‘8th August 1859’. Also the Warrnambool Art Gallery has an authentic Henty piano dating from 1837 and Stephen Henty’s wife died in Hamilton in 1906 so it is possible that the spirit level came to us from a Henty family descendant living nearby via Mr N. Kelly. If the Henty provenance can be proved then this item is of high significance.This is an unvarnished wooden spirit level, apparently home made, with a bubble in the centre. The top has been attached with eight screws, now much rusted. This piece of music is the varsoviana dance piece from the Giacomo Meyerbeer opera, ‘L’Etoile Du Nord’ arranged by Camille Michel. The varsoviana was a slow graceful dance originating in Poland in 1850 and appearing in Australia in 1856. ‘L’Etoile Du Nord’ was a comic opera in three acts composed by Giacomo Meyerbeer in 1854. Meyerbeer was the most successful stage composer of the 19th century but his works are rarely performed today. Camille Michel was an editor, composer, author and arranger working from the 1840s to the 1880s. The varsoviana music arrangement probably dates from the late 1850s or 1860s. It is not clear who ‘Minnie Henty’ was but it is most likely that she was Minnie Adair who married George Henty, the son of Stephen and Jane Henty, pioneer settlers in Western VictoriaThis sheet music is most important mainly because of the ‘Minnie Henty’ signature. The Henty family members, founders of the first permanent Victorian settlement at Portland, were influential in the history of the Warrnambool area because of their connections with surrounding properties and with coastal shipping. The music also has social significance as an example of music popular in 19th century drawing rooms.This is a two-page piece of sheet music (cover and two pages of music notation) with the material printed in black on cream paper. The back cover is blank and the front cover has the title and names of the composer and the arranger with ornate scrolls around the printing. The edges and fold of the pages are much tattered and torn in some places. There is also a Warrnambool and District Historical Society stamp on the front cover and the signature of Minnie Henty. Believed to be Edward Henty's telescope which was used at the early settlement at Portland and used to observe movements of ships at sea. Believed to have come off the boat "The Thistle"Found, stored in a thermos which was purchased in a box of sundries at a clearing sale at the Henty property.Brass telescope, made in 4 sections plus the eye piece. Stephen Henty married Jane Pace in Fremantle April 1836; four sons and six daughters were the issue of the marriage. Mrs. Stephen Henty was born in Yorkshire on 14 April 1812, and she died in Hamilton on 02 February 1906. She was the first white woman to settle permanently in Western Victoria, arriving in Portland on 18 December 1836. From a small booklet "Old Memories," written by Jane Henty on her 84th birthday. 'My husband and I arrived at Portland Bay in 1836, though he had made some trips there previously. It was on a Sunday night we landed by moonlight. I was carried on shore through the surf by a sailor. On reaching the homestead, a comfortable dwelling composed of four rooms, kitchen and dairy, a bright log fire was burning, table spread with a large pot loaf, piles of eggs and tea. Edward had not travelled inland, but my husband never rested until he had gone all through the interior, cut a track through 15 miles of forest land with two men and a dray, and arrived on the banks of the Wannon. He used to be absent for weeks at a time, causing me great anxiety. The natives were not to be trusted, so he usually took with him an expiree from Tasmania. Stephen Henty fixed all three of the first stations -Muntham, Merino Downs, and Sandford. In July 1837 Stephen sent some fine flocks of merino sheep to Muntham, having previously had a hut built for the men, and yards for the sheep; his two brothers, John and Frank, took charge of the sheep on the road. "On August 3, 1837, my son Richmond was born the very day the sheep arrived at Muntham. Edward was in Tasmania at the time, and arrived three weeks after the birth of my son, with his brother James and his son... My husband and Edward were in partnership, Edward managing Muntham, and Stephen the mercantile part at Portland Bay. John managed Sandford and Frank Merino Downs... My husband was the first white man who stood on the border of the Blue Lake at Mt. Gambier. The Henty family and their descendants were notable settlers in Australia, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. While most family members settled in Victoria from 1834, others remained in England and in Tasmania. The portrait was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.Members of the extended Henty family were notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Stephen George Henty's family lived at 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District lived in his final years at 'Field Place', Kew. Alice (Henty) Hindson, born in Portland in 1852, died at 'Field Place' in Kew in 1932. She was the daughter of Francis Henty. The portrait has added artistic and aesthetic significance as a signed photographic portrait by Lafayette Photographic Studios, Collins Street, Melbourne. The studio flourished from 1906-1930. Photographic portrait of Alice (Henty) Hindson (1852-1932), one of the daughters of Francis Henty and Mary Ann Lawrence, taken and signed by the internationally renowned London photographer 'Lafayette'. The oval photograph is encased in a brown calf skin case. The portrait represents the sitter in middle age, wearing a black dress and a white lace collar. Alice Henty had married John Hindson in 1875 at Trinity Church, East Melbourne. The couple were to live at 'Shrublands' in Canterbury from 1883. Her husband died in 1919 and it is likely that the portrait was taken after that date. She was to donate 'Shrublands' to the Anglican Church in 1923, after which it became St John's Home for Boys (and girls). Alice Henty's sister Louisa Henty died at her home 'Field Place in 1924. Alice was also to die at Field Place in 1932.
