Robin WELCH ( 23 July 1936-5 December 2019) Born Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England Robin Welch is one of the most highly respected contemporary British potters. The full range of his work includes large vessels with related paintings, fine drawings, and distinctive bowls and vases which explore colour, surface texture, form, detail of edge, and line. He is one of small group of significant British potters who expanded the language of throwing pots on the wheel through post-wheel additions and alteration. This gave his generally cylindrical forms a more organic and sculptural aspect, but their heavily coloured and textured surfaces were as much about painting, too, as Robin sought an integration of the visual disciplines he enjoyed. As he once wrote: “There’s no divide between art or craft. You decide to be an artist and you’ll use anything. After a couple of years of world travel, including working in Australia from 1962 to1965 helping Ian Sprague set up his Mungeribar Pottery and exhibiting in Melbourne, Robin Welch returned to England setting up Stadbroke Pottery in Eye, Suffolk in 1965. Apart from his studion work Robnin Welch was a skilled designer for industry including Wedgwood. When not in his Suffolk studio Robin Welch spent much time in Australia where he appreciated the outback’s arid earth, brilliant light, grittier textures and luminous colour. 'Shiloah' was the home of Isaac Jeeves the younger - son of Isaac Jeeves the Valley Pioneer and brother of Ellis Jeeves. Isaac built this house himself using local timber he cut and split. It was ready for his marriage to Selina Leach of Bayswater in 1886. ‘Shiloah' was enlarged to take guests in the early 1900s. It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished.Black and white photograph of wooden structure with two wings and a central verandah. A letter from Nance Leach (undated) telling the history of John McClelland's house. He arrived from Ireland in 1863...5 years later they selected 80 acres at Tunstall (Nunawading) and cultivated a market garden, The property was on the site of Stanley Engineering. The couple and one daughter retained the house and Whitehorse Road section of the property about 1948. This was sold to 'Turners' on condition Turners removed the house to 113 Springvale Road for Miss Tess McClelland. When she died the house was sold to Hal Johnson and he later sold it to Mr Florio. John McClelland died 1911 aged 77. Information from the notes of Nancy Leach re Emma Elizabeth Weston who sailed for Melbourne on the 'Charlotte Gladstone' on 9/9/1869.Information from the notes of Nancy Leach re Emma Elizabeth Weston who sailed for Melbourne on the 'Charlotte Gladstone' on 9/9/1869. She subsequently ran a bakery in Swanston street and later married Thomas Scott, Tinner and Galvanizer. They lived in Victoria street (now rooks Road) and had several children, one daughter being named Emma. Emma married Mr. Ottenbach who jumped ship from the German navy and they had a daughter, Christina who was a member of the Nunawading Historical society. The file contains numerous original and copied primary sources as well as short histories and correspondence between the Kew Historical Society and the Historic Buildings Preservation Council when it was proposed to demolish the church. Following the demolition of the Church, an aged care facility - Bodalla - was erected (since demolished). The file contains some information on Bodalla and a foundation stone relating to the former Church which was placed on the site. In the file, there is a photocopy of a brass plaque from 1860 that refers to the architect being George Wharton and the builders Messrs. Len Castle trained as a secondary schoolteacher and started making pottery in 1947. Initially self-taught, he was the first potter to be awarded a fellowship from the Association of New Zealand Art Societies, travelling to St Ives to work with Bernard Leach in 1956-57. He lectured at the Auckland Teachers' College until the early 1960s, before concentrating on making stoneware at Titirangi, New Zealand. Leslie DUMBRELL (14 October 1941 - ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Leslie Dumbrell was a pioneer of geometric abstraction in Australia. After completing a Diploma of Art (Painting) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Melbourne in 1962, Leslie Dumbrell adopted the international style of colour field and hard-edged abstraction. She taught alongside Peter Booth, James Doolin and Alun Leech-Jones at RMIT and Prahran College of Advanced Education. In 1966 Dumbrell was appointed to the Prahran College of Advanced Education teacing with Alan Leach-Jones and Jim Doolin. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Gwyn HANSSEN PIGGOT (1935-2013) Born Ballarat Gwyn Hanssen Piggot completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Melbourne University in 1954. She spent three years apprenticed to Ivan McMeekin at Sturt Pottery, Mittagong, New South Wales. Between 1958 and 1965 Gwyn Hanssen-Pigott worked at various potteries in the United Kingdom, including Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire, Leach Pottery at St Ives, and Wenford Bridge Pottery and Aldermaston Pottery in Berkshire. In 1960 she established her own studio in London. The essence of her work is purity, simplicity and form. She worked with porcelain for strength and for its translucent nature, and fired with wood to add a dine ash bloom to glazes. Robert BARRON (1957- ) Born in Harpenden, England. Robert Barron first worked full-time with clay in 1976, the family pottery at Croydon, Victoria. In 1979, he left Australia on a five-year journey to New Zealand, North America, England, Europe, and South Korea to work with skilled potters in woodfiring. During this time, he visited Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge Pottery, Cornwall, UK., and was engaged as an apprentice at Cornwall Bridge Pottery, Connecticut, USA. Returning to Australia in 1984, he established Gooseneck Pottery at Kardella, Victoria. With the assistance of a Crafts Board grant Robert Barron built a 1000 cubic ft five-chambered Nabori-Gama style woodfired kiln. This kiln one of the largest wood-fired kilns in Australia. The children are being given gifts of sleeping bags by Santa Claus. In the first photo is Barbara Leach, a Legacy widow who became a Legatee. It is December 2001 as a similar photo was used for the 2001 Annual Report. The Melbourne Legacy Leadership Group is a dedicated group of young people aged between 18 and 35 years who themselves were Junior Legatees. They organise and conduct events throughout the year for young Junior Legatees. The photos were mounted in an album of events that happened for Junior Legatees in 2001, including a trip to the Aquarium, a trip to Luna Park, horse riding and fishing and a Melbourne Legacy Leadership Group Christmas party. Melbourne Legacy arranged many events for Junior Legatees to experience. The Marist Brothers arrived in Bendigo in 1893 and began classes for boys in makeshift classrooms at St Killians. By the next year they had moved to a permanent school in McCrae Street. In 1983 Marist amalgamated with St Mary's to form a co-educational school, "Catholic College.Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2003. Alma Shanahan (1924-2015) was a Victorian potter who came to live at Clifton Pugh's Dunmoochin art colony at Cottlesbridge, on Melbourne's outskirts in 1953. Unable to join the co-operative proper, as she was a potter, not a painter, she built her house at the top of the hill, 135 Barreenong Road, Cottles Bridge. The c.1953 house is historically, aesthetically and architecturally significant because it is a good example of the design and ethos of mud brick dwellings synonymous with Eltham and features the extensive use of recycled materials, which was characteristic of the 'Eltham style' of architecture. Like the others in the artist community, Alma Shanahan built her own residence in stages out of local materials. Shanahan was later joined by neighbours and Dunmoochin potters Peter and Helen Laycock. She trained for a term with Peter Laycock but was otherwise self-taught, basing her practice on the teachings of Bernard Leach. After Pugh's death in 1991 she became the longest standing Dunmoochin resident. Her works are incised with her full name. Alma Shanahan was a part of the Dunmoochin Artist's community whose (other) members (Kevin Nolan, John Howley, John Olsen, Mirka Mora, Peter Laycock, Helen Laycock, Peter Wiseman and Chris Wiseman) made an important contribution to Victoria's cultural history. From the mid 1950s Pugh persuaded a number of other painters, as well as potters and other artists, to come and live at Dunmoochin and they formed one of Victoria's most important artist communities. She started potting around 1961 (aged 37). "Horse Power" was made using Chullora clay, which indicates it was made during her first seven years of production. Horse Power is about man's search for "energy" and how the "energy" can turn around. Made from Chullora (Sydney) clay.
