Newspaper. Harry Biggs Collection. An original article cut from The Advertiser of the log gaol at Eaglehawk. The late Mr. John Fly built it in the early 1900's. It is a log cabin with an iron roof. Caption reads: "This is the Rutherglen police station, which was described as a 'disgrace' at Rutherglen Shire Council's meeting last Friday. Walls of the tiny station are riddled with white ants and the two lock-ups at the rear are primitive. The station is said to be more than 80 years old and entirely out of character with its surroundings -- the pleasant civic square. The condition of the buildings will be brought to the attention of the Victorian Police Commissioner and Public Works Department." Murray Comrie Collection. A page from People newspaper, of June 26, 1966 with article titled 'A Story Without Names' by Tom O'Mara. Describes a story (myth?) supposedly well-known in Tarnagulla. The story is about a child which was disfigured by her father who was being held in a lockup. He was said to have reached between the prison bars and bitten her face in retaliation for being betrayed to police by the child's mother. The author notes that no-one can verify the story or provide names of the participants. What was distinct about the Performing Arts Course at the University of Ballarat is it had students from a wide range of back grounds with an age range from 17 to 53 years. Students are keen to not only act but to write, design, direct, production manage, stage manage, design lighting and sound and create their own theatre. They also take responsibility for a large percentage of the decision making and administration. Artistic Director and Course Co-ordinator was Peter Tulloch. Aitkens Gap Police Lock up was originally constructed at The Gap which was south of the junction of Gap Road (Sunbury Road) and Calder Highway (Victoria St/Mt. Alexander Road). It was part of a police complex which was a changeover station for the gaol escort. The goal was relocated and rebuilt in the police station grounds in Sunbury in 1993.A coloured photograph of five men working on the removal of Aitkens Gap Gaol from its original site. Used for polio patient for sleeping. Polio disability aid. Callipers were fitted to lock up the knee joints of weakened leg to enable a person to walk without their legs collapsing and to pick the foot up from the ground when foot drop had occurred due to paralysed skin muscles. The polio patient found these devices restrictive and uncomfortable. See KVHS 1796, KVHS 1798Used by Wilma Davies, a Kiewa Valley resident, who suffered from polio from the early 1950s.Metal frame for each leg to fit in a 'V' shape from the waist to the feet. Supported by canvas straps - 3 on the left side, and 2 on the right (1 has been torn off and replaced with leather straps). 2 flat foot shaped steel plates are at the foot end and are adjustable for the feet to be at several angles.
