Sculpture - Door panel sculpted by Hans Knorr (1915-1988) in 1968, 'Education and Achievement'
“The theme of the panel is education. From man’s primeval roots, and from beginnings symbolised by the two ovoid shapes, which are both basic and universal, man is raised by his natural yearning and by education towards things of the spirit; so that in the second level of the panel we see a church building and a book, a dam and the ploughed field, such diverse inventions as the crucible and the wheel, the aeroplane and the radar screen, and symbols of commerce and culture. The continuing central pillar, or tree, symbolises the life of Christ which binds together and culminates, not only in the Cross but in the full Unity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” Large sculpture by artist Hans Knorr (1915-1988) symbolising humanity's growth and progress through effort, experience and education. The door panel was commissioned by the Sisters of Mercy in 1967 on the opening St Martin's in the Pines (Sacred Heart College, Senior School).Door panel sculpted in aluminium hans knorr, sculpture, catholic education, education -

Book - Religious Book, John Scott, D.D, The Christian Life Vol 4, 1696
This religious book by John Scott, D.D., late Rector of St. Giles in the Fields, London, sets about to explain some of the church's doctrine. The book originated from the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute. The book was printed for Walter Kettilby, a bookseller and publisher in London in the 17th century. He died in 1699 and was buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The book is significant for its age – it is one of the oldest books in Flagstaff Hill’s collection, published in 1696, well before Australia was colonised. The publisher, Walter Kettilby, passed away three years later. The book expresses the writer’s interpretation of Christian doctrine giving an insight into the doctrines and beliefs of the 17th century. The book was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. which has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance. The Christian Life Part III Vol IV Author: John Scott, D.D. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. Edith Louisa Cavell (4 December 1865 – 12 October 1915) was a British nurse and patriot. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I, for which she was arrested. She was subsequently court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage. We should not falter in our great task of happiness, nor move ever among our fellows with shadows on our face when we ought to have sunlight. “We have a mission to others — to add to their cheer. Postcard - Photograph, Black and white, Green Bros, 1918
The Maréchal de Turenne, a three mast barque, was built in the "Chantiers de la Loire" shipyard in Nantes, port in the West of France, in 1899 by the company René Guillon et René Fleury. Capacity of 3000 barrels. The barque is called a "cap-hornier" in French. In a book written in 1973 by Georges Aubin, "La mer douce et cruelle", ed. France-Empire, a chapter "Une traversée du trois-mâts nantais Maréchal de Turenne" (page 285 to 319) tells how the ship was navigating from London to New-York to load barrels of petrol bound for Melbourne. The photograph demonstrates how prepared the merchant navy was during the First World War. The French Merchant Navy had additional men from the Navy: the six sailors in uniform and sailor "bachi" bonnet with the AMBC inscription were on the ship to support the crew in case of enemy attack. Two of those soldiers carry a bayonet. One of the sailors is wearing headphones: World War One saw telecommunication progress. At sea, the threat were the German submarines: the U-boats.The photograph depicting the 22 members of the crew was taken in October 1918 onboard the Marechal de Turenne. The two on the right and left side are holding a picture of the barque. One man at the back is holding a cat. 11 names are written at the back. Melbourne Legacy
Document - Document, diary
A diary written by Legatee Frank Doolan as he sailed to Perth and then visited Legatee Ivan Davies and his wife Mercy. He mentions docking at King George Sound which was the harbour from which transport assembled to convoy to the Middle East for the first World War. He was greeted by a member of Perth Legacy, Keith Manwell. He mentions visiting Mt Clarence and The Anzac Desert Mounted Monument "which was destroyed by Nasser's Gyppos at Port Said, and of which the pieces were transported back to Australia, stone base and all complete. Where a new model was made by Ray Ewen at Frankston and was sent back to Italy to be melted down and recast. It is double life size and very striking, depicting an Anzac charging from a horse which has been shot down under shellfire, to a new charger - rearing to go." He leaves the SS Kangaroo for a few days to visit a "Legacy pal", Ivan Davies. They toured his farm 'Carngham'. His observation at the end shows the comradeship of Legatees. "time to depart after several glorious days of perfect hospitality. To be accepted spontaneously as one of the family is the test of true friendship, and we received the full treatment from Mercy and Ivan at 'Carngham'". The year is unknown but the trip was in March. It could have been before a Legacy Conference in Perth. Was with other memorabilia that has come from Frank Doolan from both his war service and his time with Legacy. Frank Doolan posted this copy of his diary to Ivan Davies in 1978. Not sure how it and the cover letter (01131) were returned to Legacy's collection. The diary shows that Legatees from different regions of Australia visited each other and had strong friendships over the years. Textile - Artefact : Textile, St Ann's College Blazer, C1980's
St Ann's college history dates back to 1872 with the arrival in Warrnambool of eight Sisters Of Mercy from Ireland. They purchased Wyton House, which was the former home of Mr William Ardlie, soon after their arrival, and the first school was opened that same year. It was initially known as St Mary's and had both day and boarding scholars. When the chapel was built in 1888, the name was changed to St Ann's. It operated as both primary and secondary education until 1974 and in 1991 it amalgamated with nearby St Joseph's CBC and became co-educational operating as Emmanuel College. At that time the uniform changed from the familiar green with yellow to navy blue and maroon. The motto translate as Work conquers all. This blazer belonged to one of the last students to attend both St Ann's College and Emmanuel College and was Vice Captain of Emmanuel College in Year 12. Donald Clark Collection. A monochrome photograph depicting the wedding of two people known as 'Commodore & Mrs Tom Thumb'. Marked being 'at Tarnagulla in 1885'. However this image is actually just a copy of an original photograph which depicts a wedding that took place in the USA. The original image belongs to the Library of Congress. According to Wikipedia it depicts: "The Fairy Wedding group, Charles S. Stratton ("General Tom Thumb") and his bride Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump, alongside her sister Huldah Pierce Warren Bump ("Minnie Warren") and George Washington Morrison ("Commodore") Nutt, entertainers associated with P.T. Barnum, in wedding clothes. From the Liljenquist Family Collection of Civil War Photographs, Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress". It is unclear if these people came to Tarnagulla when their troupe toured the world in 1869-1872. They visited and performed in Bendigo between the 2nd and 8th April 1870. Copy photograph. -

Domestic object - China bowl, Gibsons and Paterson Limited, St Ann's College, Mid 20th Century
St. Anns College had its beginnings in the arrival in May 1872 of a group of nuns from Ireland. They were the third group of Sisters of Mercy to come to Victoria. The Warrnambool nuns worked hard to establish a school and orphanage for the socially disadvantaged children of the district. They purchased Wyton from Captain Ardlie that year and also Amhurst later on. The Nazareth sisters of Ballarat took over the orphanage in the late 1880's and moved the children to Ballarat but the school continued to develop an expanding curriculum. A chapel was built in 1887 and a school wing in 1906. They survived on tuition fees and the generosity of benefactors though the early and middle part of the 20th century including a large bequest by Mrs Vera Kenna in the 1960's. Boarders were a regular part of convent life until the 1970's which is probably the source of this plate. St Ann's College was combined with St Joseph's CBC college as Emmanuel College and operates today as the largest Catholic college in the district. This has significance as it is associated with one of the longest running schools in the district and hence would have a connection to many Warrnambool people as well as district people who boarded at the college.White bowl, with green and yellow stripe around edge and emblem. Scripture Lesson- Rev. S E Doman 7. 1st Address- The Very Rev. The Dean of Bendigo 8. Presentation of Medals 9. Hymn- Kipling's Recessional. God of our fathers, known of old, Lord of the far-flung battle line, Beneath whose awful hand we hold Dominion over palm and pine- Lord God of hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget-lest we forget! Far-called, our navies melt away, On dune and headland sinks the fire; Lo, all our pomp of yesterday. Is one with Nineveh and Tyre Judge of the nations, spare us yet, Lest we forget- - lest we forget. If, drunk with sight of power, we loose Wild tongues, that have not Thee in awe Still boasting, as the Gentiles use, Or lesser breeds, without the Law- Lord God of hosts, lest we forget! For heathen heart that puts her trust In reeking tube and iron shard, All valiant dust that builds on dust, And guarding, calls not Thee to to guard, For frantic boast and foolish word, Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord! 10. Address Rev. B W Heath. 11. General Thanksgiving Ven. Archdeacon Haynes. Almighty God, Father of all mercies! We, Thine unworthy servants, do give Thee most humble and hearty thanks for all Thy goodness and loving kindness to us, and to all men. We bless Thee for out creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but, above all, for Thine inestimale love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope and the glory. And, we beseech Thee, give us that due sense of all Thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth Thy praise, not onlu with our lips, but with our lives; by giving up purselves to Thy sevice, and by walking before Thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; thriough Jesus Christ our Lord; to Whom with Thee and the Holy Spirit ba all honour and glory, world without end. Amen. 12. Nearer My God to Thee. Mearer my God to Thee, Mearer to Thee; E'en though it be a cross That raiseth me; Still all my song shall be. Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee. Though like the wanderer, The sun gone down, Darkness comes over me, My rest a stone, Yet in my dreams I'd be Nearer my God to Thee, Nearer to Thee. There let my may way appear Steps unto Heav'n, All that thou sendest me In mercy given. Angels to beckon me Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee. Then, with my waking thoughts, Bright with Thy Praise, Out of my stony griefs Berhel I'll raise; So by my woes to be Nearer to Thee. Amen. 13. Last Post.
