Railway systems have methods by which trains can proceed in safety from station to station, free from the risk of collision with other trains. These methods are generally known as "Safeworking" and they particularly apply to trains on single lines where trains run in opposite directions. The stations between these two sections are called crossing stations. A "Train Staff", a thick, round metal rod, bearing the name of the two stations is issued and these places are designated as Train Staff stations. No train is permitted to proceed through the section unless the train driver either takes the staff for the section into his possession or personally sights the staff. (Note that every station on the line is not a crossing station. These roles were performed at Barongarook, Gellibrand, Banool, Beech Forest, Wyelangta, Weeaproinah and Crowes.) Except for the period 1927-1939 when Train Section Orders were applied instead, due to declining business Train Staff and Ticket working was used throughout on the line.B/W. Condensing 100 years of Otway history the author tries to give an insight into the thoughts and ways of the settlers in opening the western Otway Ranges. It gives some indication of the mental pressure, hand-in-hand with the physical stress, as a settler cleared the land and made a living for his family. This is a passenger ticket for the Screw Steamship "Otway".It was built in 1872 at Glasgow for the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company. She traded to and from the Western Ports until 1878.when she was sold for the Melbourne West Australian trade. She was broken up at Sydney in 1924. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company commenced in 1868 and operated on the Western Ports run using the ships "Edina", "Rob Roy", "Otway", " Nelson" and "Julia Percy".In 1878 it became the Western Steam Navigation Company which operated until 1896. There is no information available on the passenger James Gilligan This item which may come from the old Warrnambool Museum is of considerable interest as a rare memento of steam travel to and from the Western Ports in the 19th century. Warrnambool was an important port at that time and this item is part of our marine history. This is a receipt for a passenger's ticket to travel to Belfast ( Port Fairy) on the Screw Steamship "Otway" in 1875. It is pasted on a brown background and enclosed in a glass covered brown wooden frame.There is string at the back for hanging the item. George Bass and Matthew Flinders made a voyage along the northern coast of Van Diemen's Land in 1798 to prove the existence of Bass Strait. The first vessel to attempt such a passage was the "Lady Nelson" under Lieutenant James Grant. Men sought out Bass Strait without the benefit of a lighthouse for the first half of the 19th Century after which, after several maritime disasters, on 29 August 1848, Cape Otway lighthouse commenced operation. The Otways area of Victoria, at the time of writing, was an underused area for bushwalking. In the past, people have considered these ranges unsuited for walking because of the thick forest cover, cold and muddy conditions for much of the year, and the steep slopes. George Sydenham was appointed as Colac Shire Valuer and rate collector in 1890 which threw him into direct contact with the Otway people at a time when the first selectors were suffering badly. He would have heard their frustrations and grievances in great detail.
