The Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) was an Australian part-time volunteer military force of World War II modelled on the British Home Guard. The VDC was established in July 1940 by the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) and was initially composed of ex-servicemen who had served in World War 1. The government took over control of the VDC in May 1941 and gave the organisation the role of training for guerrilla warfare, collecting local intelligence and providing static defence of each unit's home area. General Harry Chauvel, who had retired in 1930, was recalled to duty in 1940 and appointed Inspector-General of the VDC. Chauvel held this position until his death in March 1945. Following the outbreak of the Pacific War, the Government expanded the VDC in February 1942. Membership was open to men aged between 18 and 60, including those working in reserved occupations. As a result, the VDC reached a peak strength of almost 100,000 in units across Australia. As the perceived threat to Australia declined, the VDC's role changed from static defence to operating anti-aircraft artillery, coastal artillery and searchlights. This head-wear was Introduced by Lieutenant colonel William Malone whilst in command of a New Zealand Territorial unit (Taranaki Rifles) just prior to World War 1. The hat's crown was said to mirror the outline of Mount Taranaki. The hat was formerly adopted by the New Zealand army in France in early 1916 and is commonly referred to as the 'Lemon Squeezer'. It is still in use for ceremonial purposes. Note: Lieutenant colonel Malone was killed in action on Gallipoli in 1915 during the battle of Chunuk Bair. History has it that the origins of the Slouch Hat began with the Victorian Mounted Rifles; a hat of similar design had been worn in South Africa by the Cape Mounted Rifles for many years before 1885. The design of the Victorian Mounted Rifle hat originated from headgear of native police in Burma where Lieutenant-Colonel Tom Price had recognised its value. The Victorian hat was an ordinary bush felt hat turned up on the right side. The intention of turning up the right side of the hat was to ensure it would not be caught during the drill movement of “shoulder arms” from “order arms”. The Slouch Hat became standard issue headdress in 1903 and its brim position was mostly standardised. The slouch hat became a famous symbol of the Australian fighting man during World War One and continued to be worn throughout World War Two. A plume of emu feathers was worn in the puggaree of the slouch hat by Australian Light Horse. The tradition was continued by Australian armoured regiments wearing a smaller tuft of emu plumes behind the hat badge on the black beret.
