Domestic object - Lingerie Bags
Donor believes works were completed by her great aunt: Lydie, Rosa and Olivia Pollard when sisters were young girls. They were completed in Country Durham England. Works have been passed down through family.Two embroidered laundry bags with scalloped edges one with red flowers and the other with gold flowers. Each has a fold over cover, envelope style with embroidered flowers on a cream background. Michael Gabriel Giudice (1882-8/12/1947) was the son of Baptista and Rosa (nee Lang). In 1907 he married Beatrice Annie Harvey. Michael is listed as an agent and in 1931 is living at 451 Hargreaves St., Bendigo with his wife Beatrice.Black and white photograph mounted on rectangular grey board. A few Alfred nurses who trained in the 1880's and 1890's presented this bell, on August 3, 1931, to the Alfred Hospital Nurses League. List of names Emma F. Rice (Graduated 1888) E.M. Farie-Wright (1888), J.May (1891), Rosa J.M.Snodgrass (1897), Florence B.Lloyd-Wilson (1891) Agnes Dale-Smith (1891) Annie Russell (1889) Annie E.H.Thomson (1892)The Nurses League was founded in 1918 for 'nurses to socialize and exchange ideas'. The League was very active and the social events notoriously noisy. The bell was presented in 1931 with a note, 'hoping it will be useful and also to show warm appreciation of our very pleasant Reunions from a few of the Trainees of the Eighties and Nineties'. The thought was to help bring the gatherings to order long enough to make announcements. It has been used extensively for this purpose over the years and most recently, at the League's centenary lunch in 2018.A small, engraved electroplated nickel silver metal bell. Worn by Rose Caplan who was the donor, Ida Gouttman's mother. Immigration records show that Morris and Rose (Rosa) Caplan emigrated to Australia from England in 1910 on the Orsova. Rose died from a sudden illness in 1928 while she and her husband were travelling in Europe and had just visited her father in Latvia. Rose was buried in Berlin. Rose and Morris' daughter Ida, who had kept the shawl, married Leon Gouttman in Sydney in 1938. Ida was an active member of the Brighton Historical Society when she moved back to Melbourne later in life. Newspaper (Item) - Newspaper advertisement, BUXTON HOTEL, 1950s
A newspaper advertisement regarding the Buxton Hotel in Buxton. Dex and Rosa Brand were the hosts at the hotel at the time of the advertisement. They, along with their children, Colin and Helen, ran the hotel in the 1950s. The Buxton Hotel was built by William Burchall, probably in the late 1870s. The first owner, who also had land locally, was Frederick Nichols (1833-1904). The Buxton Hotel is located directly opposite the General Store. It was fronted with two huge oak trees and bordered and backed by large pine trees. It was a weatherboard structure with a painted corrugated iron roof. Old split wood shingles were covered by corrugated iron, which overlaid the shingles to make the roof watertight. Book - TABLETS OF MEMORY
Three Cohn brothers, Jacob, Julius and Moritz came to Bendigo from Denmark in 1852. They were followed by their brother Solomon (Henry) in 1858. Jacob (1830-1911) married Rosa Levy in 1858 during a return trip to Denmark. Moritz (1822-1878) married Roschen Ballin in Germany in 1861. Julius (1828-1877) married Rosetta Spyer in Victoria in 1866. Henry (1826-1874) was married to Leah Fonseca.. Jacob, Moritz and Julius began the Victoria Brewery in Bridge Street in 1858, whilst Henry was described as a traveller and collector for Cohn Bros. in 1859. The brothers soon expanded into the making of cordials (soft drinks). In 1866 Henry took up a hotel in Sandridge (Port Melbourne).
