Ernest Anderson (head gardener) and Harry (gardener) worked at Williamstown Botanic Gardens. The Anderson family lived in the curators lodge on the grounds in the 1930s. Horses were used at the gardens until the 1960s when the council bought a truck. Mr Biggs drove as Mr Anderson did not have a licence. He rode his bike to the Town Hall every Friday to put in the time sheets. The collection is the only known photos of the Gardens working horses and demonstrates Edwardian Municipal gardening techniques that continued into the 1960s. They are photographic evidence of the planting styles, species choices and structures. Details inscribed on the reverse of some of the photos confirm names of staff at this time. In 1884 J.A. Petterson built the first Orbost Club Hotel with the licence in the name of Thomas Maguire (his stepson). This hotel was the first in the area and cost 1,400 pounds to build (ref. In Times Gone By - Deborah Hall) and was actually built before Orbost was proclaimed a township - April 17 1885. T.a. Marshall was the proprietor about the time the photograph was taken. Petrol rations tickets were first issued in October 1940 during World War II. Petrol rationing ceased in 1949. The ration tickets were produced by the Note Printing Branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.Two Victorian motor spirit ration tickets, tickets were originally printed on a sheet divided by perforations. Each ticket reads "VICTORIA" / "SERIES B" / "VALID IN ALL STATES" /"TWO 2 TWO GALLONS". Fine print on each tickets reads "THIS TICKET MUST BE ENDORSED IN INK / BY CONSUMER WITH NAME, LICENCE NUMBER / AND VEHICLE REGISTRATION NUMBER". Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. Robert Osborne Temple No VX134542 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 10.12.1942 aged 21 years. At discharge on 25.3.1946 he held the rank of Sgt in the 16th Australian Infantry Battalion. As above his enlistment date from the nominal roll is 10.12.1942 and the date on the licence is 16.9.1942. He was most likely in a CMF unit at that time and transferred to 16 Battalion which was given AIF status. Not to be confused with 2nd /16th Batt AIF. Jane Hamilton applied for a licence for the Queen's Arms hotel in Quarry Hill in Dec. 1872. It also provided 8 rooms for boarding of gentlemen. Jane was the wife of James Hamilton jnr. who, until 1872, had been in partnership with his father, James snr. at Hamilton and Son, wholesale stationers and general merchants of Hargreaves St., Bendigo. At this time there was a conveyance five times a day between the Queen's Arms and the Shamrock hotel.A letter written to the Bendigo Advertiser by E.V. Gray; the letter was published on 09/06/1972. The first hotel built in Orbost was the Club in 1885 an old wooden place on the corner built for J. A. Petersen of the Mitchell Hotel Bairnsdale, with the licence in the name of Mr Thomas Maguire (stepson of Petersen). In June 1889 there was a rush to Mackenzie River, about 28 miles from Orbost, on Twelve Mile Creek. An estimated 80 men rushed the ground, but yields were patchy and large numbers eventually left. They were coming and going almost daily.The Club Hotel was the first hotel built in Orbost and remains a significant building in the town. Initially John Matchett had a grocery store in Pall Mall. In 1893, he advertised as a hay and corn dealer. When he retired to a farm in Kamarooka, the business was taken over by his son Robert Matchett (1864-1928). In 1904 the business moved to the Corner of Mitchell St., and Bath Lane. He owned it from 1901 until 1919. Thomas Marshall was the owner from 1919 - 1972. After 1972 it became Marshall's Hotel Pty Ltd . From 1981 there have been various owners.
