This is a vintage item dating from the early 20th century. It is a hand-held lantern that could also have been hung from a ledge or wall. Lanterns of this type were often used by railway employees or ship's crew for signalling. The lighting was probably obtained by a candle as there is no evidence of an oil mechanism.This item is of interest because of its age and its possible use locally over a hundred years ago.This is a metal lantern painted black on the outside and silver-frosted inside. Used to signal ships from lightstation. White flags are semaphore flags used for signalling alphabet letters. Salvaged from junk pile and mounted on wooden block. The identical, white hand held flags, which were used as a pair, are each stapled to a dowel. Information on both items indicates they were made by a well known flag, pennant and banner makers, Evan and Evans who were then located at 680 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne and are now in Spencer Street West Melbourne. Founded in 1877, the firm was a co designer of the Australian Flag in 1901. The flags are likely to date from c.1960 - 70 and are currently displayed in the former Keepers' quarters/ weather room mounted on a wooden block. Similar pairs of semaphore flags are held in Wilsons Promontory and Cape Nelson collections. The flags have second level contributory significance for their provenance to the lightstation and flag makers Evan & Evans. Thet have historic value for increasing our understanding of the semaphore signalling system formally used at the lightstation.Two identical white fabric flags stapled to a wooden dowel and secured to a wooden base on an angle.They have blue writing, on tags, on the flags.On tags on both flags, "EVAN & EVANS FLAGS P/L / FLAGMAKERS / 680 ELIZABETH ST / MELB. 3000 3475755"

The railway opened on 5/5/1906 and to Brighton on 22/12/1906. the latter largely as a single track. Has the name F E Bradford on the front cover. Gives rules for crossing cable tram lines, those for drivers, speeds, conductors, accidents, bell signals, signals on overhead line, regulations for working by staff and ticket, pilot working, rules for workers on the permanent way, and additional rules such as collecting money from passengers for breaking windows. The items include one intact brass clip and sections of others. They were used for hoisting visual signalling flags and relate to the use of the forty‐one flags (CNLS 0004.41), which were used to convey messages to passing ships and which are included in the Victorian Heritage Register listing for the lightstation (VHR H1773) . They have second level contributory significance for their provenance to the lightstation and association with its set of navigational flags (CNLS 0004.41), which were a major part of the communications system formerly used at the lightstation.Twenty one flag clips, some are intact others partial. Train Instrument transportation Box used for the transporting of Flaman Speed Indicator and Recorder to the repair workshops The Flaman Speed Indicator and Recorder was a device patented in 1901 by Nicolas Charles Eugène Flaman of France for indicating the current speed of a vehicle (for example a railway locomotive) and recording it on a paper tape that could be unrolled and examined at the end of a run to provide evidence of the speeds attained on the journey. Design features: The paper tape recording was driven directly by the wheels of the locomotive, with the paper spool moving at a fixed rate per kilometre travelled. Three graphs were recorded, the first being time elapsed (with the trace moving vertically if the train was stationary), the second being a speed curve. and the third recording the driver's attentiveness to signals ("Vigilance") by marking one tick above a line when the driver depressed a button, and another below the line when the engine went over the signal ramp. Data recorded: Read together, it was possible to determine exactly what speed the locomotive had been travelling at any point in time or distance. As well as allowing study of locomotive performance, it also allowed greater scrutiny of the observance of the driver of speed restrictions along the line and attentiveness to signals.
