Gravel Hill Primary School (1566) opened in 1875 and succeeded Sandhurst Primary School (586). Situated in Mundy Street, it was designed by H R Bastow the Education Department's Chief Architect following a design competition in 1872. Black and white photo of St. John's Catholic Church, Mitcham erected in 1872. Two wings at rear give the church a cruciform shape were added in 1888. This building became decrepit gradually and prior to its demolition in the 1950's, the end walls of the crossings were supported with heavy 'flying shores'. Initially listed as T J Connelly's Tin shop, this premises on the corner of High and Forest Street, expanded to include all items of ironmongery. By 1878 they were advertising gas stoves for sale and installation.The item is order book of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. Each hand-written page records the customer name, date items and price. Teh pages are numbered in the top corner. There are 270 pages. The cover is thick hard purple covered cardboard, with the spine and corners finished in brown leather. The pages are bound together with string. The book includes the date range of 1872 to 1876. Rutherglen State School No. 522 was opened early in 1909 when the Rutherglen Common School (built in 1872 and opened in 1873) became overcrowded. This piece of an old bath dates back to the late 1800s to early 1900s. The bath would have been used by the Partington or Bosch families at the property at Point Lookout. This piece is from a bath that was used by our grandfather (born in 1872) when the family lived at Point Lookout before the Partington family bought Willis Vale in 1878. The bath remnant was retrieved after fire destroyed the house. Bed head (remnant): From the Willis Vale homestead. The Partingtons purchased Willis Vale in 1878. William James Partington (1872-1941) and his wife Annie May (1874-1965). They were the parents of Eva, Grace, Alan, Jess and Jack. The building in this image was built by J. I. Murray for use as a Bank premises. The National Bank of Australasia opened a branch in the building in 1862 and remained there until 1865. The Colonial Bank of Australasia then occupied the building from 1865 until 1872. At the time this image was taken in 1883 the building was in use as a shop, although a sign saying 'National Bank of Australasia' could still be seen on the building. Goods for sale can clearly be seen in the windows and the photographers’ wagon or cart can be partly seen to the right of the picture. At a later stage the building became part of the Royal Hotel which can be seen to the right of the building. The small building to the left of the picture was used as a printing office by the West Bourke and South Grant Guardian newspaper between 1865 and 1872.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows a shop in Main Street Bacchus Marsh in 1883. Goods for sale can be seen in the windows but there is no signage on the building to indicate what type of shop it is. A sign across the upper facade reads 'National Bank of Australasia' but this bank had vacated this location by 1865. Three women and a man can be seen standing in front of the shop. Two of the women appear to be shaking hands. The woman standing in the doorway is wearing an apron and may be the shop owner or assistant. Just visible at the edge of the photo can be seen a buggy with advertisements on the back and side. Letters that can be distinguished suggest that in all probability this is the carriage used by Stevenson and McNicoll, Photographers, on their trips around rural towns and countryside. Tenders for the building of a Savings Bank building, designed by Messrs Reid and Barnes were called in 1872. The winning tender was for 3,800 pounds by Mr Wright. The building was opened 9th June 1873. Until this time the bank had been operating out of temporary offices at the rear of the Beehive Building.Now and then, history in pictures.
