These badges all marked W.R.C. appear to come from the Warrnambool Racing Club. The first race meeting in Warrnambool was held in 1848 at Jetty Flat. The first meeting at the present race course was held in 1858 with Warrnambool Racing Club established in 1873.The main event in Warrnambool horse racing today is the May Racing Carnival which features the Grand Annual Steeplechase. It has 33 jumps, the most hurdles of any race in the world over 5,500 metres. Although the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was first proposed in 1911, construction did not commence until 1938. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The SEC had a high demand for timber, and set up the first of a number of sawmills at Bogong Creek in 1939 and set up the first hardwood logging in the headwaters of the Kiewa River. These new ‘towns’ such as Mt Beauty and Bogong, survived, serving the needs of operational personnel and their families, and expanding with growth of new industries. Mount Beauty, and to a lesser extent Bogong, are among these places. Clothing. Ladies' collar. Net fabric, entirely sewn into 'pin-tucks' .5 cm deep in the high stand-up collar, and increasing to 7.5 cm at the lower edge of the jabot front. Opening at the back, the jabot is fastened by nine metal hooks, and hand-stitched loops. Collar has a tightly gathered double frill of the tulle fabric, at neck and is held up right by five 'covered' 'bones'. The lower edge of the front and back is edged with a 1.5 cm wide silk fabric frill. Centre lower edge of back has two 59 cm long silk ribbon ties. This ribbon is also attached to the lower edge of the jabot 58 cm and 60 cm long - presumably for the wearer to tie firmly in place. Neckline seam is re-inforced and neatened by an organdie type fabric, hand-stitched in place. Two fine elastic loops (now perished) one 52 cm, one 58 cm would once have helped to hold the jabot in place, with the arms passing through the loops, to keep the jabot in place. Detached sleeves. Net fabric, entirely sewn into .5 cm tucks. Reaching from the wrist to above the elbow. A double net frill edges the wrists, where a 6.5 cm opening, fastens with metal hooks and hand-stitched loops. A cotton tape, .5 cm wide neatens and re-infrces this seam, and a row of chain stitch, in silk thread embellishes the outer side of the seam. William George Page was Shire and City Engineer in Wodonga from 1965 until 1989. When he arrived the Shire of Wodonga had a population of 17,000 people. In 1966 Wodonga was selected as a city for special growth assistance. In 1972 Bill Page presented a new Town Plan to the Wodonga Council. Over the ensuing years he dedicated himself to bring this plan to fruition. He often had to argue and campaign with the Albury-Wodonga Corporation to push for the interests of development in Wodonga. This included winning a planning appeal to allow the saleyards to be relocated to Bandiana on the outskirts of Wodonga. Bill Page retired on health grounds in July 1989. The Council honoured him with a farewell dinner and renamed the saleyards at Bandiana the W.G. Page Saleyards in his honour.The Mayor , Cr Valentina Gillard, said "Every development in Wodonga in the past 24 years has a bit of Bill Page in it". Elizabeth Edith Mack was born to parents William & Elizabeth (nee Wilmont) Hatton, in approx. 1873 in Moyston, Victoria. She married Frederick David Mack (a wool and skin buyer) in approx. 1903. Frederick Mack was born in 1968 in Warrnambool to parents Joseph and Louisa Mary (nee Despard) Mack. Joseph served as Shire Secretary. The Mack family (including Elizabeth and Frederick) occupied the same sandstone house in the town for more than a century. They had at least 5 children. Elizabeth Edith Mack died in Warrnambool in 1931 aged 58 years. The Circular Memorial Window was erected in her memory by her children. Elizabeth and Frederick's son, Ronald, became The Honorable Sir Ronald (William) Mack, M.L.C. President of the Legislative Council of Victoria. He was knighted in 1967 (the first Warrnambool -Born person to be so honoured) while Minister for Health and regarded the care of the Mentally Ill of prime importance but also the care of the aged. He was given a state funeral after his death in 1968, the service being conducted at Christ Church.The Mack family was a prominent pioneer family in Warrnambool. Her son Ronald William Mack was the first Warrnambool-born person to be knighted.Circular stained glass window above five lancet windows in the west wall of the second nave, depicts 'Christ Ascending in Glory'. The inscription is on a mosaic plaque below the central window.The mosaic tablet below the centrral light refers to this memorial to Elizabeth Mack. This is the wedding dress of Ella Janetzki, nee Sutcliffe, who married Eric Janetzki in Adelaide on 25 January 1941. The dress was made to measure in a shop in Rundle Street, Adelaide, and cost four guineas. Eric had enlisted in the army in 1940 and was called to duty in 1941, which determined the date of the wedding - though Eric very nearly didn't make it! He caught the train from his home town of Nhill, Victoria on the eve of the wedding only to be held up by flooding on the tracks, ultimately arriving three hours late amid much fuss. Ella later said that there were so many setbacks it was amazing they married at all. They remained together for 58 years until Eric's death in 1999. The dress was also worn by Ella's sister Eileen in October 1943 when she married Jack Edwards at the Church of Christ, LaTrobe Terrace, Geelong. As this was during the war, the sisters did not have enough clothing coupons to purchase another dress. Has the short tram stop/section pole adjacent to the tram. In the background has the SEC offices, "The Baby Shop", also Crockers and Tunbridge's stores. Bound book of 100 Certifications - "Hawthorn Tramways Trust - Certificate of Competency as Motorman". Consists of 100 pages of certificates, numbered 1 to 100, with butt of each certificate retained in the book. Bound with heavy card covers, red coloured on the outside of the covers, stapled with black binding material. Each Certificate numbered, in top left hand corner, giving date, employee name, date of birth and signed or initialled by the Engineer and Manager. In the top left hand corner of the book is printers logos - The Prahran Telegraph Printing Co, King St, opposite Town Hall, telephone 108W. Most certificates issue 29.12.1919. Certificates 1 to 58 issued by HTT 59 and 60 issue with HTT crossed out and MMTB written in. 61 to 75 and 92 to 99 removed from book and No. 100 removed altogether. No. 74 is loose. Empire Day had been initiated following the death of Queen Victoria and was held throughout the Empire from 1901-58. The main day of celebration was on 24 May, the date of Queen Victoria’s birthday. The Balwyn fundraising button was created for an appeal three days before the official date. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930sPatriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced.
