(Items D184-D193 contain all the manuscripts except part six titled 'Communications'.) In Part 3, seeing successful and original industrial designs from other countries, Boyd reflects on the standard and production capacity of the Australian manufacturing industry. Port Fairy Historical Society Museum and Archives
Postcard - Photo of postcard, A pathway in the gardens
... A pathway in the gardens ...Entrance to Gardens (1926) The Port Fairy Botanical Gardens were formed in 1856 making it one of the earliest gardens in Victoria. The first curator was James Prior, he was paid fifty-two pounds per annum. He was an outstanding curator having been apprenticed to the trade in England at the age of 12, his brother Edward in later years was the Curator of the Koroit Gardens. Prior retired in 1903. During the years of his curatorship Port Fairy was said to have the best gardens outside the city of Melbourne, he was constantly in touch with Baron Von Mueller and later Guilfoyle of the Royal Botanical Gardens of Melbourne. In the early years plants from all over the world were planted here with varying rates of success many of them sent by Baron Von Mueller. In the 1930’ and 40’s the gardens were still very beautiful, and the curator was Roy Manuell. The beautiful iron gates at the entrance were destroyed in the 1946 floods and were replaced in 1989 using some of the material from the original gates. From the 1950’s on the gardens went into a state of decline, much being taken up by the caravan park until in 1986, after a public meeting ‘Friends of the Gardens’ was founded when the entrance section was restored. Red Ensign Flag was updated in 1908, the current Commonwealth star of seven points replaced the earlier six-pointed starPart of a collection of Wold War I Flags obtained by Harry Groves. Rare historical example of an Australian Flag.1901–1903 version Australian/Commonwealth red ensign (1901–1903) Version After being submitted to King Edward VII for approval the competition winning design which featured a southern cross with nine, eight, seven, six and five points respectively was standardised by the British Admiralty with the number of points on the four biggest stars of the southern cross set to seven, ostensibly to improve ease of manufacture. The original variety of points was an indication of the relative brightness of each star as it appeared in the night sky.On top left hand side of the flag is inscribed "GROVES" and a cardboard note stating "This Australian Flag and other flags in the Gallery were brought home from the First World War by Harry Groves."red ensign, world war 1 -

Document - Script, Robin Boyd, University of the Air. Design in Australia 1. The International blender. Working Script, 06.11.1964
Robin Boyd was involved in creating several TV series for the ABC University of the Air. 'Design in Australia' was an eight part series. (Items D184-D193 contain all the manuscripts except part six titled 'Communications'.) In part 1, Boyd discusses the general framework of the series in which the relationship between an Australian identity and a homogenising cultural force, reinforced by technology and mass production, is explored. Boyd questions the wholesale acceptance of imported ideas and goods, and instead advocates a critical examination of the Australian design culture, a search of an originality that does not fall into the myths of bush values. (Same content as item D184, differing Video cues of LHS of page.)This is a script for the ABC television program 'University of the Air', subtitled 'Design in Australia', broadcast in 1965. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Article, Herald, Gymnasium of novel design to be lighted from dome, 23 October 1919
"GYMNASIUM OF NOVEL DESIGN TO BE LIGHTED FROM DOME Trafalgar Day (October 21) was selected as a fittlng occasion for the laying of the foundation stone of the "Norla" gymnasium In connection with the Missions to Seamen new building in Flinders street extension. The ceremony was performed by Lady Fraser. The design of the gymnasium is an entirely novel one. The building is of reinforced concrete, with a dome having a span of 40 feet. The design is based on that of the Pantheon at Rome, and like the Pantheon has no windows. The entire lighting is from an opening In the centre of the dome. Through this aperture the light radiates equally throughout tho gymnasium; and the necessary ventilation is also secured. Between the gymnasium and the main building there is an ambulatory 12ft. wide, from which onlookers may watch the games and exercises. The floor Is to be laid with a fall to the centre for rlnking purposes. The gymnasium will complete the buildings connected with the Missions to Seamen In Melbourne, and the claim Is made that the society has not anywhere a flner or more complete set of buildings than the seamen are favored with here. The ladies who take an active interest in the Mission are inviting subscriptions to furnish the gymnasium with trapeze, punch balls, and other exercising apparatus. Messrs Walter and Richard Butler are the architects."norla dome, lady fraser, 1919, foundation stone, walter richmond butler (1864–1949), richard butler, gymnasium, trafalgar day, simon fraser (1832-1919), pantheon -
