Woodlands Homestead was erected by William Greene in 1843 and is one of the state's oldest buildings. Over the years the complex has been renovated and extended. The property has connections with the racing industry over the years along with the neighbouring properties of 'Cumberland' and 'Attwood'. Isaac Jeeves the younger was a son of Isaac Jeeves, Valley Pioneer. He was lived c1858 - 1932 and married Selina Leach of Bayswater (c1858 - 1931)in 1886. Isaac built the homestead 'Shiloah' that was later extended for use as a guest house. This item comes from the great aunts of the donor, women of the Kinnear family of Allandale, Allansford. In the early 1840s William and John Allan took up large tracts of land to the east of the Hopkins River. In the late 19840s the run was divided, with William taking the Allandale section and John taking the Tooram section. In 1906 a portion of the Allandale section, including the homestead, was acquired by the Kinnear family. This hat is retained as an example of a woman’s hat from 80 years ago – stylish and eye-catching. It is also of interest as coming from the Kinnear family of Allansford.This is a woman’s hat – a spherical-shaped piece of dark blue felt or velvet curved to fit a head. The headpiece is covered with layers of small feathers in brown, yellow, black and white tonings. The label of the maker is on the inside of the hat. Situated in the wetlands on the trail opposite the Pontville Homestead, former home of Major Charles Newman and across the Yarra River from Sweeneys Flats, Eltham. Brand new Eltham-Templestowe footbridge over the Yarra River off Homestead Road, Eltham which was completed in July 2004. The Yarra River Footbridge was opened in August 2004 and links the Diamond Creek Trail between the Shire of Nillumbik and City of Manningham. The Old Station Homestead site at Corringle Beach was a popular destination for Orbost people to have picnics late 19Century. Crafty Carson Carpetbag, Old Man Redback and Elvis Evil Eagle stole the rainmaking kit from The Flying Dogtor's plane. Elvis Evil Eagle (aka The Bodgie Bird) flew up again and sprinkled the powder into the clouds. The rain started filling the gully and the creek flooded into the homestead. Bell brought from Longerenong Homestead by former boundary rider William McClintock. Given to John Hamilton and used on his farm to call the men to dinner. In 1922 it was used as a school bell when Higher Elementary School classes began in the Firebrigade Hall and in the Methodist & Presbyterian hall untill the Murtoa H.E.S. was built in 1925 and their own bell was purchased. The bell was donated by Miss Grace Hamilton.The Bell is significant as it was originally the property of William McClintock - one of the original settlers to obtain land in Murtoa around 1872. A Spokeshave is an ancient woodworking tool, used to shape items by gradually shaving back the wood. Originally made from stone, they evolved to have wooden handles with a steel blade, and the type varied depending on its purpose. It could be used for wheel spokes, chair legs, paddles, bows, or arrows, and was an essential tool for farming and homesteads. More modern examples are now made entirely of metal.Cylindrical length of wood, with tapered handles at each end. This type of cast iron kettle was used by pioneer families, mainly rural in the early 1900's upon open fires (log). It covered rural activities that needed a constant readily available source of boiling water, in or mainly outside the kitchen of homesteads. This kettle was used in the early to late 1900's for the refreshment of stock men and farmers that had irregular "tea" breaks under sometimes hard and gruelling conditions.This kettle belonged to and was used by a Kiewa Valley, pioneer family, the Roper Family. This kettle was moved from their Kiewa Valley property to their hut built on the Bogong High Plains. The Bogong High Plains area provided Kiewa Valley cattlemen a good supply of fodder to supplement their Kiewa Valley grazing areas. This "camp draft" activity , in the high plains, could take up to six weeks.This large cast iron modified camp pot (cauldron) has a long tap connection located at the bottom end. The "tap" is made from brass and has a simple elongated "bar" control swivel at the end to control the water flow. The tap suggests that only water was heated (to a constant boil) for the replenishment of cattlemen's, or other horse rider's, tea or coffee mugs. Refreshments at a "temporary" location on the Bogong High Plains. The statue is a bust of George Evans who settled in Sunbury along the Jacksons Creek and built a homestead which he named 'Emu Bottom'. The statue was originally erected on the site in 1986 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of European settlement in the area. A time capsule was buried at the base of the statue and was lifted and opened in 2011 when the 175th anniversary was celebrated. This photograph informs the viewer of the grand ballroom at Rippon Lea homestead in Elsternwick in the late 1800s. One of 33 rooms in this mansion, built for Fredrick Sargood in 1868, the ballroom stood where the swimming pool is currently located. Louisa Jones’ (nee Nathan) love of the 1930s Hollywood style prompted her to demolish the old ballroom and replace it with the swimming pool. Sections of the property from the Ferris Rd to the Toolern Creek were compulsorily acquired for the construction of the Melton By Pass road to become the Western Freeway. The freeway plan divided the original 1911“Darlingsford” farm. The section of the Ferris Rd 70-acre paddock belonging to Bon became the Freeway and roundabout. The construction to the west passed over the paddocks and the internal track along the fences connecting the Barrie brothers to the original Homestead at the Toolern Creek. Early homes often had an open fire containing a fountain, buckets and kettles that hung from a hook in the fireplace. These containers supplied hot water for cooking, washing and cups of tea. The fountain was placed on hob until needed and then hung over fire.This water fountain would have been used by early settlers in Orbost before the connection of electricity.A large cast iron water fountain. This handmade woman’s nightdress comes from the Kinnear family of Allandale, Allansford. This is a white cotton nightdress with an opening to the waist which is enclosed with two white buttons. There is a frill of lace on one side of the opening. The white collar also has a large white frill of lace. The long sleeves are inset and have a band of lace at the wrists. This large deep pan (with a long handle) was used by pioneer families, mainly rural folk, that needed a pan which could cope with an open fire heat source, in or mainly outside the homestead. This pan was used in the early to late 1900's for the "stews" and other meals required by hard working stock men and farmers that had irregular "lunch and dinner" breaks under sometimes hard and gruelling conditions. Hot plates were normally not in use.This "open fire" saucepan belonged, and was used by a Kiewa Valley, pioneer family, the Roper Family. This saucepan was moved from their Kiewa Valley property to their hut built on the Bogong High Plains. This saucepan was one of an array of "open fire" cooking utensils used in the "camp draft" grazing in the Bogong High Plains and this could take up to six weeks. This kettle belonged and was used by a Kiewa Valley, pioneer family, the Roper Family. This kettle was moved from their Kiewa Valley property to their hut built on the Bogong High Plains. A scientific study started in 1947 to study the impact of grazing cattle on the natural Alpine and sub Alpine vegetation found grazing cattle had an adverse affect on the natural Alpine and sub alpine vegetation, and grazing on the plains was stopped by the Victorian Government in 2005.This large (black, soot infused) cast iron saucepan has a "ten pint" holding capacity and was used on the "open fire", possible on the fire direct. It has a long all metal handle coming from the top half of the pot and angled at approximately sixty degrees upwards. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Harmony Vale was the name of the homestead built by early pioneer Jabez Richardson. The whole of the valley took on this name. The building lasted until 1933. St. Mary's Anglican Church at Bulla originally occupied a site along Oaklands Road, adjacent to 'Woodlands' homestead. It was established in 1859. With there building of the Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine it was found that the church on its existing site was directly under the flight path of the aircraft so the building was demolished stone by stone and rebuilt in the Bulla township adjacent to the Alistair Clark Rose Garden. The original site has not been developed because some early graves are there.St. Mary's Church at Bulla is one of the earliest to be established in the Bulla district. Towong Hill Homestead is a 110-year-old Federation style mansion situated on a rock outcrop, with views of about 260 degrees. It was built over 2 years by grazier Walter Mitchell from bricks made from local clay dug from the river bank, to be the family home for his new bride Winifred. They established their home in 1904. After the death of Walter in 1917, Winifred relocated her family, but the homestead remained in the families hands. In 1935, Thomas Mitchell (1906-1984) returned home to Australia, a successful Lawyer, and married city girl, Elyne Chauvel, and settled himself back at his childhood home, Towong Hill. Thomas was a world champion slalom skier, had been a prisoner of the Japanese at Changi, and was elected for the Country Party in 1946 and served as attorney-general in the McDonald government. His wife Elayne (1913-2002) is best remembered for her Silver Brumby series of novels for children. But Elyne also wrote a substantial number of non-fiction works about the Snowy Mountains. Cambourne homestead was built by 1903 for Rebecca S. Carkeek, who purchased the property in Wodonga in 1899. Cambourne is situated on the original Wodonga Run which was established in 1836. In 1855 the pre-emptive right of 171 acres of the Wodonga Run was granted and sold the following year. The allotments on which the five-acre Cambourne property developed, were purchased in 1873 and 1876, coinciding with the opening of the Railway from Melbourne. The property was purchased by Rebecca Carkeek in June 1899, wife of William Carkeek, Publican of Wodonga and Shire Councillor. Local architects Gordon and Gordon have been credited with the design of Cambourne. The house at Cambourne was built at some stage between 1900 and 1903 as a large single storey homestead. It was constructed in red brick with corrugated iron roof and encircling verandah. Cambourne is a probable work of architects Gordon and Gordon, it is amongst their best preserved and one of their few surviving buildings in Victoria. This 1901 history of the Boer War is written from the British perspective and the writing is so emotionally-charged that it reads like a story from a Boys Only Annual. The owner was James Fidler, presumably the eldest son of Thomas and Fanny Fidler who arrived in Melbourne in 1849. They lived on a property called Grange in Panmure with the homestead called Maida Hill. Thomas Fidler owned butchers’ shops in Warrnambool and Panmure. James Fidler was born in 1850 and died in 1929. This book is of interest because it was owned by James Fidler whose family was a prominent one in Warrnambool and Panmure in the 19th century. The book is also useful for researching the Boer War, a conflict in which many Warrnambool and district men took an active part. This is a hard cover book of 1554 pages. There are several pages at the end listing other books published by Cassell and Company. There are 127 chapters and an index. There are many black and white illustrations and several full-page colour plates. This chair is believed to have come from the homestead of Dr. Daniel Curdie (1810-1884) who arrived in Australia in 1839. He established a property called Tandarook ten miles south of Camperdown. At first he combined farming with a medical practice as he was the only doctor in the coastal regions between Geelong and Portland. After 1850 he concentrated on farming and exploratory tours of the region. The chair may have been used for some or all of his ten children.This chair is of considerable significance firstly because of its rustic nature and age, being a hand made item and secondly because of its association with Dr. Daniel Curdie, one of the important pioneers of the Western District.This is a hand made wooden chair with two struts at the back and four struts supporting the legs.
