Sir Archie Michaelis was born on 9 December 1889 in St Kilda and died on 22 April 1975. He married Claire Esther Hart on 14 January 1920. They had 3 daughters. He represented the electorate of St Kilda in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1 May 1932 to 1 0ctober 1952. He was Speaker of the house from 1950 to 1952. Before entering politics he worked with the family firm Michaelis Hallenstein and Co., leather merchants, from 1909. He also served in the Royal Field Artillery 1914-1919, in Egypt, Aden and Salonika. Other roles included: president of the St. Kilda Hebrew Congregation, a leading Orthodox synagogue in Melbourne; President Vic. branch 1945 and Chairman Patriotic Funds Council 1947-1951; President Vic. Jewish Advisory Board 1939-1940; Vice-president Kipling Society, London, and President Vic. branch; member English Public Schools Association, Vic. Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen; Vice-president Alfred Hospital 1935-1972; Patron St Kilda Welfare Organisation, Claire Esther Michaelis was born on 20 Jan 1893 and died on 8 October 1973. This Honour Shield was the work of the school Sloyd pupils and Head Teacher. The honour book written by the Head Teacher Mr Thomas Kidman contains the names of 14 past students of Docker's Plains Primary School who served during the First World War. Handwritten summary of service pertaining to each past student including Nurse Alice M BYRNE who served in Egypt and France.Honour Board in the shape of a shield and carved from timber originally made by the Sloyd students and head teacher of Docker's Plains State School in 1921. The Honour Board centrally houses a casket with glass door containing a velvet covered book containing the names of 14 past students who served during World War 1. When the school closed in the 1940's resident were invited the take items and William Richardson, brother of Private Leslie George Richardson who died in June 1916 from meningitis prior to embarkation, chose the shield and framed photograph collection which his mother contributed to. Emma Thomas Collection: Items were owned by Emma Courtis, nee Thomas (1854-3/3/1937. Family lived in Hamelin St, White Hills. Clothing items possibly made by Emma or a local person in White Hills area and used around 1890s. Emma's family include Elizabeth Penrose (mother), Solomon Thomas (father), and Richard Courtis, a blacksmith (her husband). The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. This outfit was made and worn by Dorothea Fush, the mother of Thea Sartori. It is one of a number of items in the Sartori Collection.Mother and daughter, Dorothea Fush (nee Winstanley) and Thea Sartori (nee Fush) were both skilled dressmakers. One of the items donated was entered in the Royal Melbourne Show in the 1960s and won an award for home dressmaking. This wedding photograph is an illustration of the intermarriage of notable Victorian (and Kew) families. The parents of the groom were the Hon. James Balfour MP., and his wife, Frances Charlotte (Henty) [the eldest daughter of James Henty] who married at Hawthorn in 1859. The Balfour lived at 'Windella' in Studley Park Road. Henry Rairey (Harry) Balfour was the youngest son of Mr & Mrs Balfour who married Katie Harrison of 'Horley' in Molesworth Street, Kew. Miss Harrison's father was the T.S. Harrison (merchant and importer, b. Banbury, Oxon, 1829, d. Melb 1901). Portrait of the wedding party in the garden of Horley in Molesworth Street, following the marriage of Elizabeth Kate (Katie) Harrison to Henry Rairey (Harry) Balfour at the Kew Presbyterian Church in 1905. The outfits worn by the women were reported in Punch, on 9 February 1905]. The bride wore a frock of ivory white satin, with bertha of duchesse lace and a yoke of ruched chiffon. The bridesmaids … wore white muslin dresses, inserted with Valenciennes, made in early Victorian style. The white straw hats were trimmed with lace and blue hydrangea, and their flowers were blue hydrangea, delphiniums and cornflowers. … The bride’s mother [right] wore a well-cut dress of black silk. An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in a mansion, originally named Illapa, at 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937), his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948) and their children. George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.This garment is part of a collection of women’s clothing, owned and worn by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) - born in Clare, South Australia 1867, died Kew 1948 - and also by her daughter. The garments date from the 1880s to the 1930s. The collection includes day dresses, evening dresses, evening coats, capes, and undergarments. As the wife and daughter of a mine manager, the collection includes representative examples of clothing worn by upper middle class Australian women in domestic circumstances, and at social and civic events. A number of the costumes from the 1920s to the 1930s are of a particularly fine quality, being both rare, representative and intact examples of Australian fashion of the period. The garments in the Weir Collection were donated to the Kew Historical Society by a granddaughter of Edith Weir in 2017.Striped pink and beige silk bodice, joined at the front with twelve mother-of-pearl buttons and featuring extensive use of cream coloured lace, particularly at the cuffs of the wide sleeves. There is an inner sleeve of lace as well as an extended ruffle of lace extending from the cuff. The bodice has a floating panel at the front, which is bordered with lace. Joseph Butterworth COOMBS (1842-1901), was an accountant who founded a successful mercantile trading company. At the time of his marriage to Caroline Mary MICHEL in 1969, Coombs had already purchased 10 acres of Studley Park. The acreage included land on the west of Fenwick Street that extended along lower Stawell Street to the corner of Yarra Street, all of it connected directly to the Yarra environs. A right of way to Studley Park Road was on the title, though Coombs went on to purchase more land, some of which faced Studley Park Road. In addition to owning the Studley Park acreage, Coombs later acquired 1,201 acres of land abutting the Acheron River. While retaining the Kew property he became a Taggerty Councillor and was Shire President for a time. J.B. Coombs died at Acheron Station in 1901 (aged 59 years). A few months after, tenders were called to repair the Kew dwelling, the Fenwick Street property now appearing in records with the name ‘Hope Mansell’. Caroline Coombs remained at Hope Mansell until she died in 1924, survived by three sons and five daughters. Not long after her death, advertisements appeared for the sale of the Studley Park land. The sale seems to have been a mechanism for distribution of the Estate, as the following year the original 10 acre holding was transferred to members of the family. The eldest daughter Mabel married William Younger who, with his brother Alexander, developed Younger and Mackie Courts, both south of Studley Park Road. [Research: Kerry Fairbank]In 1961, the granddaughter of Joseph and Caroline Coombs, Mabel Isola (Younger) Grattan, donated ten 19th century dresses and parasols to the Kew Historical Society. The costumes, now known as the 'Coombs Collection', are the earliest recorded items of clothing to enter the Society's collection. Each of the items in the Coombs Collection, of which this item forms a part, is historically, aesthetically and socially significant. As a collection, the costumes includes outstanding examples of morning wear, day dresses, wedding dresses, and clothing accessories, providing evidence of outstanding dressmaker skills in Victoria during the mid to late Victorian period. Periwinkle blue afternoon dress made of finely woven wool with silk quilting to the yoke and cuffs. The one-piece outfit is fastened at front with large mother of pearl buttons. The dress includes a very long train. Chic is the daughter of Ernie Anderson who worked at the Gardens from the age of 15 until he retired at 65. Ernie’s full name was Ernest Rupert Cyril Anderson. The Anderson family moved into the Curator’s Lodge in the grounds of the Gardens in 1938 following the death of the previous Curator, William Joseph Crowe. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Beryl initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. The children attended Mont Albert Central School. Lily's sister Alice married Hector Williamson (1892-1981) in 1921. Hector was a civil servant and worked at the Melbourne Museum, where accommodation was provided. They had one daughter Margaret. Another sister Minnie (Min) married Hector's brother Charles (Charlie) Prosser Williamson (1893-1961). Charlie was an engineer and ran a hardware business in Whitehorse Road (near the tram terminus). They lived at 12 Barloa Road and had one son, Donald Williamson, born 1924. Donald (Service number VX146389) entered RMC on 28 February 1942 and graduated on 14 December 1943. He enlisted the following day as a Lieutenant with the 2/32 Infantry Battalion. He was mentioned in Despatches "for exceptional service in the field S.W.P. area". Promulgated in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 6 March 1947; was killed in action in Brunei on 3 July 1945. The donor identified this as having been taken in the orchard area of 'Edgeware', the property on the corner of Montrose Street and Union Road in Surrey Hills where the Blakie family lived and from which Dr Blakie practiced. The gate opened to Union Road and the orchard was the area later developed as the shops at 157-165 Union Road. The property was rented from the Zeplin family. This would have been taken shortly before Dr Blakie moved across the road to 174 Union Road - the Surrey Hills Medical Centre. He purchased the land and has architect Arthur Plaisted design a home and surgery for him. Family details: James Blakie was born in New Zealand to a farming family of Scottish origin. He trained at Otago University with additional study at Cambridge. He married Catherine Miller Martin in 1906. This bodice, which originally had a matching skirt, belonged to Phoebe Richardson (nee Brinsmead, 1885-1956), who married Charles William Richardson in 1911. The family lived in Geelong. Brinsmead Lane, off the Bellarine Highway in Leopold, is named after Phoebe's family, being the original location of the family home. The bodice was likely made by a seamstress as the family were quite fashion-conscious. Phoebe's daughter Edna Baker (nee Richardson, b. 1914) wore this bodice as a dress-up as a child. She donated it BHS in the 1980s and provided additional information on it when visiting the Society in 2004.Khaki green silk bodice, boned around waist. Bakery Square–Site of 19th Century Jongebloed family bakery, grocery shops and residence demolished 1970 and later hardware shop erected c 1960. Gorrfried Jongebloed was born in 1857 and came to Melton in 1887 as a Captain in the Mercantile Marine. In 1888 he married Marie Antionette, second daughter of Mr Shebler, and took over the bakery and green grocers business. Ten children were born to the family- Gerhard, Annette, Gorrfried (dec 1937), Emil, (dec 1947), Nicholas, Julius, Theckla, Augustus, Marie and Margarethe, - who settled in various parts of Victoria and are, in the bakery businesses. Mr and Mrs Jongebloed senior carried on the businesses in Melton until 1926, when one of their sons Emil, took over. Mr Jongebloed, senior, died in 1930 at the age of 73 years; and his wife living until 8th October 1946, when she died at the age of 80 years. After the sudden death of Emil, in Jan., at the age of 49 years, the business had been conducted by two sons “Pat” and Bryan. Store closed down in 1970 and was demolished in 1976/1977. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. This wedding dress was made & worn by Marjorie Gertrude Schneider, elder daughter of Mr & Mrs A. A. Schneider, of Lorquon, married Harold Francis Rohde, youngest son of Mr & Mrs J. B. Rohde, of Gerang, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Woorak, March 2nd, 1949.The dress was handmade by the bride, Marjorie Schneider.A charming frock of ivory cloque, inset with a yoke of beige lace with scalloped edges, cut on very flattering lines. The bodice, fitting perfectly to the waist and the back having a row of buttons, was ornamented as the shoulder with a diamante clip which had adorned her mother's wedding gown. The full skirt was draped softly from the waist, & extended into a long train at the back. The halo of orange blossom, which held the veil in place, set off to perfection the exquisite bride. Nancy (Nan) Josephine Pitt Withers was born 17 May 1897 at Heidelberg. She was the daughter of artist Walter Withers and Fanny (nee Flinn). Walter Withers and his family moved from Heidelberg to Eltham in 1903 where he set up his studio in Southernwood at the corner of Brougham and Bolton streets, Eltham. Elenor Hinde (1842-1902) was born in Lancashire England. In 1858, Eleanor married Richard Reynold in the Forest St Wesleyn Methodist Church in Sandhurst. They both gave their address as Sailors gully Goldfields. They had seven children together. Richard was a skilled tradesman and after he died in 1872 from lung disease, Eleanor married Arculus Opie. Eleanor owned a property on the corner of gladstone and Stanley Streets which later became an electrical substation. She sold poultry and eggs and preserves. One of Eleanor's sons, William John, married Anna (Annie) Jorgesnsen, and one of her daughters. Amelia, married Anna's brother Thomas Joynes Jorgensen. The Jorgensens founded and managed Jorgensens and Sons foundry and engineering works. Peter Jorgensen (1849-1914), was a mining contractor, he lived at, "Bro," Russell street, Quarry Hill. His firm was Jorgensen and Sons, mining contractors. He was a native of the Island of Alsen, Denmark.
