Financial record - BANK RECORDS, 1916-1979
The first Government controlled savings bank was established on 1 January 1842 under New South Wales legislation. Known as the Savings Bank of Port Phillip it was administered by a Board of Trustees and a Vice-President. Branches of this Bank were subsequently established in other parts of the colony. In 1853 a statutory body known as The Commissioners of Savings Banks in the Colony of Victoria was constituted under the Savings' Bank Act and each bank was thereafter to be a separate and independent institution with its own trustees and officers - however, between 1896 and 1912 the independent Savings Banks of Victoria merged to become a single institution and this development was formalised by the 1912 legislation. From 1980 the Bank was known as the State Bank of Victoria under the provisions of the State Bank Act 1980. The State Bank of Victoria established its own Archives before the Bank was sold in 1990 to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. After the sale, the Archives of the State Bank continued to operate until the Archives' holdings were transferred to the state archives.Bundles of papers from the State Savings Bank, Clunes - Loss of Pass Book Notices 1918-1961 - Deceased Estates 1916-1965 - A/C Stops 1923-1961 - Passbook Cheque Book 1949 - Stat Dec 1946 - Dep. Ephemera - Invitation - mayoral dinner, To mark the Festive Season and the end of the Year, 1918 or 1929
Although the name of the Mayor and Mayoress, and the year of the invitation are not stated, the fact that music was provided by 'Miss Gertrude Emily Johnson' provides a possible clue as to the date. Gertrude Emily Johnson (1894-1973), coloratura soprano and theatre administrator, was born on 13 September 1894 at Prahran, Melbourne. She was a student of (Dame) Nellie Melba at the women's singing school that Melba founded at the Albert Street Conservatorium, East Melbourne (later the Melba Memorial Conservatorium). The date specified in the invitation, Thursday 19th December, indicates that the event was either in 1918 or 1929. As Gertrude Johnson moved to London in February 1921 and returned to Australia in 1935, when she retired from her singing career, it appears likely that the invitation to the mayoral dinner was for 19 December 1918. Elsie Fraser would have accompanied her on the piano.Cream coloured card printed in gold and with Christmas bells and holly in green and red, being an invitation for dinner with the Mayor and Mayoress of St KildaTo mark the Festive Season, and the end of the Year, the Mayor and Mayoress of St Kilda would be very pleased if ... will take Dinner with them in the Mayoress' Room, on Thursday, 19th December, at 7pm. Ephemera - Certificate, To FW Zercho esq, 1938
The Gregory Hall was built on the grounds of All Saints Uniting Church, Chapel Street, East St Kilda in 1910-11. It was used for assemblies and classes at the All Saints' Grammar School which, after faltering fortunes, closed in1937. It is signed by the headmistress, staff and students. Zercho's Business College became the largest business college in Australia. In 1968 it was sold to Stott's Business College. Two sheets of white paper, handwritten and decorated with ink of multiple colours and each affixed to a board. Wheelbarrow - Fritsch, Holzer & Company Brickworks
Used at the brickworks of Fritsch, Holzer & Company of Hawthorn to transport bricks and materials around the works. Fritsch Holzer Originally the company was known as the Upper Hawthorn Brick Company Ltd. It was started by brothers Johann, Martin and Anton Holzer and Gustav Augustus Fritsch. Fritsch had previously been a brick maker in Abbotsford, before moving to Hawthorn. Each had a brick works that operated next door to each other and the two works merged in 1883 to form the largest brick making company in Victoria. At its peak, they employed around eighty people and were making over 250,000 bricks per week. The depression of the 1890s caused a drastic downturn in building. Bricks were not being sold and staff laid off. The company nearly collapsed. To stave off the inevitable, in 1896 a brick co-operative was formed with Hoffman Patent Steam Brick Co., Northcote Brick Co. Ltd., New Northcote Brick Co. Ltd., Chas. Butler & Son and Fritsch, Holzer and Company. Bricks were sold throughout Victoria as the company supplied the State Government, more particularly the building of schools. They continued making bricks until the early 1970s when the works closed. The former site is now the “Ftritsch Holzer Park. The local Council purchased the 14 acre site in 1972 for $1,060.000 and used it for landfill. The site became a park in 1995.
