Digital photo, George L Coop, Redex trial on Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert, 1953, 1953
... Redex trial on Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert, 1953 ...The FJ Holden is iconic in Australian motoring history. It was made in Australia by Holden from 1953 to 1956. During the 1950s, Holden dominated the Australian car market and by 1958 sales accounted for over 40 per cent of total car sales in Australia. The Redex Reliability Trial 1953 -The first Redex round-Australia reliability trial covered of 6,500 miles (10,500 km), and had a first prize of £1,000. It attracted both amateur and professional drivers in a variety of cars. The route passed through Brisbane, Rockhampton, Townsville, Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Melbourne before returning to Sydney and attracted much public interest. At the time the idea of driving huge distances around the country in ordinary cars was novel and the logistics were challenging. In many parts of the country there simply wasn’t adequate accommodation or suitably located refuelling stops. The Shell Company facilitated the race by placing petrol dumps along the 5000 km route between Townsville and Adelaide. The race began at the Sydney Showground on 30 August when 192 cars left at three-minute intervals. Of the twenty top finalists, two thirds were sponsored. Ken Tubman and John Marshall won the trial in a Peugeot 203. A black & white photo taken from near 688 Whitehorse Road. It includes 2 FJ Holdens - one is probably a passing car; the other is covered with labels and can assume to be competing in the trial. On the far side of the road are onlookers of men, women and one child standing on a wide nature strip. One man is taking photos. The houses behind are obscured by high hedges, but appear to be Californian bungalows, one with a large palm tree in its front garden.redex reliability trial, 1953, fj holden, whitehorse road, mont albert -

Functional object - Object, Cane basket on wheels
... Cane basket on wheels ...Basket weaving and brush making was a source of income for those who worked in the workshops at RVIB and other institutions in New South Wales and Queensland. A diverse range products could be produced with cane, such as cane chairs, cots, washing baskets and trolleys, and the Institution sought to highlight these in the annual report. Over time the demand for, and supply of, cane changed - particularly during World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed. At home, other materials such as plastics as well as the ability to import cheaper pre-produced products further reduced the demand for workshop pieces. This cane basket was used at QBIC for transporting heavy items. The side has been reinforced with wood and four metal bands to help the cane keep it's shape and take the weight of heavy items. The base has two pieces of board and rotating wheels are attached to the middle of the lower board which allows it to sit above ground level and be wheeled over flat surfaces. A rope handle is attached to two sides as well.1 deep cane basket with two wheelsQBIC Industries - Asset Number: 1430-1 Description: Push Trolley 7 Location: 18R Block Cane Shop employment, qbic industries -

Photograph - Image, Going on a Bear Hunt at Burwood, 22/08/2007
... Going on a Bear Hunt at Burwood ...The Feelix library was developed to help children who were blind or have low vision experience the connection with books via tactile objects. Each print book was hand selected, a clear Braille overlay placed on the pages, and items relating to the story were made or purchased and added to the kit. The kit (book and objects) was held inside a cardboard suitcase and sent through the mail in a bright orange, zippered plastic padded pouch with a carry strap. On August 22, 2007 Feelix staff organised an activity to supplement the book "We're going on a bear hunt" by Michael Rosen. First the book was read, then the young children (and their parents) replicated the actions of the book's characters in their search for a Bear who followed them home for morning tea. Later that day, Burwood School children also joined in on their own Bear Hunt.70 digital images of staff and children during the Bear Huntroyal victorian institute for the blind, feelix, rvib burwood school, louise curtin, ed gamble -

These photographs were taken to demonstrate and provide examples of how blind and visually impaired workers can undertake skilled positions as switchboard operators. In the first image, a man wearing a headset sits behind a small switchboard and on the desk is a sign that reads "Please buzz for attention. Our receptionist/telephonist is blind". In a second image, two people sit at a desk. The woman uses a device to locate a key on the switchboard whilst wearing a headset. Work on paper - Artwork, Nude 3 (Nude on Sofa and Persian rugs reclining away from viewer) by John Brack, c1982
... Nude 3 (Nude on Sofa and Persian rugs reclining away from ...Framed, limited edition lithograph. Originally produced to be bound in a book by private press publisher Tate Adams. The suite of lithographs for the book was started by John Brack in September 1981 and finished and published in December 1982. The book was launched with a series of original conte drawings, from which the lithographs were based, in Realities Galleries, Melbourne. As such a high cost of production was involved in the binding of the book, only fifteen copies were originally bound for exhibition and sale at the show. Subsequent to this approximately another thirty copies were bound, making a total finished edition of fewer than fifty copies, far less than the anticipated 200. A number of the 50 hors commerce editions have been sold as individual plates through auctions and galleries. A number of sheets were recently discovered through the estate of Brack’s art dealer Rudy Komon, from which this book has been bound. This work is from Rudy Koman's estate.john brack, printmaking
