There are records of members of the Helmers family attending Bendoc State School. George Helmers was a prospector who mined all the gold from the dry gullies that ran into Bendoc. George was born in 1866, in Bombala, New South Wales, Australia. This is a photograph of the Orbost Post Office on the site of the Commonwealth Hotel. The horse -drawn vehicle is a Cunninghame (Lakes Entrance) Coacht. The Post Mistress was Miss Farrell, who was a trained telegraphist. This was the first time the telegraph line had reached Orbost, and was about the year 1895 or 1896. (more info. from Newsletter Npovember 2008) This is a pictorial record of the an early Orbost Post Office. Post Offices are a vital necessity in any town or community playing a very important part in the progress and development of the town and district. The Terminus Hotel opened in January 1884, coinciding with the opening of the railway. The hotel had a close connection with the railway, catering for travellers and relieving railway workers. In December 1903 the original wooden structure burnt to the ground. The hotel was rebuilt in 1904 in much the same form see Record No 00306. Mr Andrew Kelly of Nullawil took over the enterprise circa 1930 giving it a new look in the 'Art Deco' style of the period. The foundation stone for the Cairns Memorial Church in East Melbourne was laid on 20 November 1882, and construction began in 1883 to a design produced by architects Reed, Henderson and Smart of Melbourne. The church was named in memory of the Rev. Dr. Adam Cairns (1802-1881), late pastor of Chalmers Church on Eastern Hill. Cairns was born in Scotland and ministered there until coming to Melbourne in 1853, where he served as a minister until 1876. The church in East Melbourne was intended to accommodate those who had seceded from Chalmers Church and formed themselves into a new charge. The original design for 'a handsome and commodious edifice in the early English Gothic style capable of seating 750 persons' was described and illustrated in The Australasian Sketcher (January 1883). The interior was to be octagonal in form, with the organ and choir placed in the southern transept. The first portion of the church was opened in November 1883, but was soon found, under the popular ministry of the Rev. G.D. Buchanan, to be too small for the congregation. A new design by the architects Twentyman and Askew was developed, and the first part of the redesigned building was opened on 5 October 1884. The completed building was opened on 17 April 1887. Built from Barrabool Hills stone with Waurn Ponds freestone dressings, it consisted of a nave and transepts, with raking floor, a substantial undercroft and the base of an incomplete tower and spire to the north-west. The church was gutted by fire in August 1988 and was subsequently redeveloped as an apartment complex. The congregation of Cairns Memorial now worships at Richmond-Collingwood, or at St. Michael's Collins Street. ‘The Fading Dream of Australian Home Ownership’ was made by Judy Turner in 1989 for her son Nicholas (then 14 years) after a family discussion about mortgages and rising interest rates (17% at the time), out of concern for his generation. “Perhaps this will keep my son warm when he can’t afford a house”, wrote Judy at the time. As a quilting teacher for over thirty years, Judy was well aware of the ‘wagga’ tradition of making do with what you have and reusing resources to make something useful. The quilt was made using approximately 270 different men’s woollen suiting samples. The fabrics in the quilt were a gift from Micheal Haze who was a travelling men’s ware salesman and friend of the artist’s late husband. The suiting samples were used just as they were, without cutting, and are stacked liked house bricks. The pieces have been machine pieced and tied. The quilt has woollen backing, with no batting. Judy’s son Nicholas, always interested in drawing, and keen to see what his mother was making, helped with the drawing and design of the house. The quilt has been exhibited in Canberra, Armidale and Sydney and featured in publications in Australian and Japan. Judy’s work has been exhibited Nationally and Internationally, including in Japan, Korea, Germany, Switzerland and the United States of America. Judy’s work has featured extensively in publications around the world, and has received many awards. Her work is held in public and private collections across Australia and the USA. As well as a successful career as an artist, Judy spent three decades imparting skills to the next generation as a patient and skilled teacher. ARTIST STATEMENT The medium of my artistic practice is quilt making and my focus is the use of colour and speedy, accurate and efficient methods of making successful quilts. In 1995 I developed an original technique of applying woollen yarn to a woollen background, focusing on the subtle blending of colour to express an idea. The main building has a comer splay and balustraded parapet with curved pediments, the words "Wybar's Buildings 1887" having been obliterated but "Caulfield Bakery 1887" with the characteristic wheatsheaf surviving in raised cement work. The walls are stuccoed and richly ornamented with bracketed cornices and keystones with masks extending to the Bakery. The main building is further distinguished by the Masonic symbol of the mason's dividers in the pediment whilst the upper level of the bakery is in overpainted brickwork. Body bricks are red and relieved by cream and black brick banding and by cream bricks to the bracketed eaves. It is a rare complex of its type in Caulfield and is important also as evocative evidence of the late Victorian Land Boom and the creation of a small now defunct commercial centre at this location by the George Wybrow. 196 Kambrook Road HO122 - City of Glen Eira https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/42415 "Glencoe" is situated at no. 196 Kambrook Road, Caulfield North and was built for the boot manufacturer, Robert Bruce Mair, in 1888. It is of historic and aesthetic significance. It is historically significant (Criterion A) as the home of an inner suburban industrialist, notable a boot manufacturer, demonstrating the attraction of Caulfield as a residential location for the manufacturers of the metropolis during the late Victorian Boom period. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as a very early example of a Queen Anne influenced late Victorian villa, comparing at the State level with ''Woodlands'' (1888), North Essendon, generally acknowledged to be one of Australia's earliest houses to fully exploit this emerging style. Sanderson P (1988): '73 Walpole Street (Kew), 'Otira'. Built 1887. Original use - Residence. Architect - Crouch. Henry Berry, a noted philanthropist and salt merchant of Melbourne, was the original owner of this two-storey, boom-period house. Berry occupied the residence until his death in 1923 while in February the following year, the property was auctioned. Subsequently purchased by the Methodist Church for use as a training college for missionaries, a number of additions and alterations were made at that stage including a memorial chapel that was built on the property in 1957.' Otira is now a private residence. Original colour positive photograph (polaroid) of 'Otira', 73 Walpole Street, Kew, taken in 1978 by students in Form 3R at Trinity Grammar School as part of a project. The view in the photograph is of the front of the house, minus the first floor verandah that had been removed some decades before and preceding the reinstatement of the verandah sometime after 1988. Prue Sanderson, in the City of Kew Urban Conservation Study, Vol.2 (1988) stated that: 'The house originally had a fine cast iron verandah to two facades, however despite its removal, it remains as a most preposessing structure, The small cast iron perch is not original. Overall the design is in Italianate styling and the walls are clad in render, with extremely fine incised medallions in the render at both levels. The Harvest Home Hotel was licensed as a beer shop in 1866. Patrick Vallence was the licensee. On his death in 1874 his widow Mrs M. A. Vallence obtained the license. At the time this image was taken George Marshall was leasing the hotel. Following a decrease in the population of Bacchus Marsh, by 1911 the hotel had lost its licence.The Vallence family still owned the building after the loss of the hotel licence in 1911and it was used for some years after this as a private residence by some members of the Vallence family. The image depicts the Harvest Home Hotel situated in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. The name of the hotel can be seen above the verandah roof. The building appears to be of stone with decorative stonework corners. A verandah is inset to the left of a gabled front section which has its own door and window. On either side of the door beneath the verandah can be seen boot or shoe scrapers. A deep gutter runs along the front of the hotel, with a slab acting as a bridge to the road. Situated in the gutter at the front of the hotel is a water trough which has an arch above it with an ornate lantern, probably to light the front entry and to enable horses to be watered at night.
