This six-postcard group is the seventh in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. C Company of the 57th was composed of men drawn from Echuca, Eaglehawk and Bendigo. The postcards are from his personal album, and many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. Refer to Cat No 893 for his service details. Items originally in album cat. no. 207P These postcards illustrate the links between battalions, such as the 5th and 47th. 1. Group portrait of the Officers and NCOs of C Company, 47th Battalion. 47th Btn was drawn from Queensland and Tasmania, and C company was primarily Queenslanders. 2. Group photo of the signallers and stretcher bearers of 5th Battalion. Dawson note that Josiah and Norman Rolls, from Golden Square in Bendigo, are in photograph. 3. Document. Cannons at Eaglehawk. Typed document by the Bendigo Branch of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria on the cannons at Eaglehawk. It reads - The two cannons were originally ship cannons, smooth bore type and later modified by the insertion of a rifled tube. This suggests that they were used as fort land guns in gun emplacements, and it is possible that these were mounted around Port Phillip Bay during the Russian scare at the turn of the century. The large ring at the rear is for lashing down to control recoil, and the swivel mounts enable elevation. These were placed in position at Eaglehawk by ox team, and at a later stage a steam traction engine overturned attempting to move one. Black and white photograph of a Bendigo Single Truck straight sill tramcar (were numbers 1 to 12) prior to fitting windscreens (Destination Eaglehawk page 30 - says this occurred in 1920). Tram has "Dewar's imperial whisky" roof advertisement, "Bendigo Tramways" on the letterboard, on the front dash, advertisements for "O-T+ drink additive on either side of the headlight and "Silverline Soap" on the panel either side of the bumper bar. Three photographs taken by a commercial photographer in Killarney Ireland. These photographs illustrate how men from different units relaxed together on leave. 1. A group of AIF soldiers enjoying leave outside the Graham Hotel, Killarney. The soldier on left is a corporal in 2nd Division Pioneers, next to him is a private in the 1st Division, then a signaller from 5th Division with two years' overseas service chevrons and two wound stripes, RSM Hector Dawson, 57th Btn, then a Gallipoli veteran with what seems to be a Fifth Division patch, unknown, and lastly a 1st Division sergeant. 2. A relaxed group outside the Graham Hotel. RSM Dawson is third from the right. Second from the left is an officer of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. 3. William Wilkie was born in Eaglehawk in 1869. William was only twelve years old when he took on the responsibilities of providing for his mother and five brothers and sisters after the death of his father from miners phthisis in 1881. William moved interstate to take up mining in Western Australia in the 1890's, returning to Bendigo to continue mining in the district. William married Mary Clough in 1896. Elected to council for the first time in 1905, Cr Wilkie served as Mayor on two occasions. 1910 - 1911 and 1914 - 1915. Black and white mayoral portrait of Councillor William Wilkie. J A Eden (Clothier) was first listed in Pall Mall in 1895. The Surprise Shop was located on the third block Pall Mall Bendigo, next to the Lyceum Store. John A Eden (Draper) listed at the corner of Bath Lane and Mitchell Street from 1898. J A Eden retired from business in 1904. A sale of men's clothing, hosiery, hats, underwear and general clothing of every description was conducted by Mr J H Curnow on the premises in Eaglehawk.
