James Andrew Kangaroo Ground, 1870 "James Andrew, Whittlesea, born in East Palford, Devonshire, England, in 1827, arrived in Adelaide in February 1850 per ship Lady McCaughton and almost immediately sailed in a coasting vessel to Melbourne, where the first work he undertook was clearing earth from a stone quarry in Collingwood. He next carried stones for masons engaged in building the Bishop’s Palace, and then was employed in Cambellfield mowing hay. He was at Saltwater River on Black Thursday, and afterwards took a little farm at Darebin Creek, remaining there for four years. He went up to Kangaroo Ground in 1859 and lived there until he bought his present property at Whittlesea, a farm of between 300 and 400 acres. He has been twice married, and had a family of six children." "Andrew, W. B. Eltham, is a native of England, born in 1822. Coming out to Australia in 1842, he lived in Brighton, Victoria for fifteen years, when he re-visited England for a year. Returning to Victoria fourteen or fifteen years ago, he commenced storekeeping at Eltham, where he has carried on that business ever since. This 1989 booklet contains lists of publications connected with Warrnambool and District and it was compiled by W. Pinson and M. Johnstone. The publications listed were ones held at the time by the Warrnambool branch of the Corangamite Regional Library Service and the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education library. The publications are listed under the headings of Community, Environment, Heritage, Industry and Tourism. Although the information in this book is well out-of-date, it may be of interest to researchers today. The publications may still be available at the Warrnambool Library or at the South West College of TAFE in Timor Street Warrnambool or at Deakin University in Warrnambool. This is a soft cover booklet of 162 pages. It has a pale blue cover and is bound with black tape. It has a map of Warrnambool city, an Introduction, an alphabetical listing of publications concerning Warrnambool City and Shire and an Index. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to contracts between Marion Gauley ,contractor of Warrnambool and the borough of Warrnambool for the operation of horse work with the tramway. John McDermid sadler,and William Stevens farmer of Russell's Creek are acting as surety for the contract.The tramway was an important part of Warrnambool's infrastructure and history and the documents also include names of local people. According to these documents , the horses were required for many different tasks in the operation of the tramways including the moving of freight, removal of sand from the area, shunting of trucks and ballasting and repairing lines when necessary.The contractors had a list of conditions imposed including the provision of six horses of strong working ability and sufficient finances. The contract period was for 1 year and payment was monthly in arrears and hours of operation were from 7 am to 6 pm. These handwritten documents provide an insight into the type of work done in the early days of Warrnambool and the working conditions at the time. Five folded grey paper with red lines around edges. This history book, written by Walter Murdoch, is the third in a series on Australian history. Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970) was a distinguished academic and writer, regarded today as one of Australia’s foremost essayists. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated newspaper columns in several Australian newspapers. He came to Warrnambool in 1901 as the proprietor of a private school and while in Warrnambool wrote the first of the history series, ‘The Struggle For Freedom’. In 1904 Murdoch became a lecturer in English at Melbourne University and went from there to be the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him and he was knighted in 1964. He published over 40 books. This book is of interest as it was written by Walter Murdoch, not only because he was important in both literary and academic circles in Australia but also because he has a place in Warrnambool’s history. In 1901 Walter Murdoch came to Warrnambool going into partnership with James Scott, the proprietor of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School and when Scott retired Murdoch became the sole proprietor and Headmaster of Warrnambool College. Whilst in Warrnambool Murdoch continued his writing. He left Warrnambool in 1904.This is a hard cover book of 242 pages. It has an olive green cover with the titles and author information on the cover and the spine in black print. The front cover has the information enclosed in an ornamental black and green border. The book has a Preface, 30 chapters on the early history of Australia, a List of Illustrations, an Index and two pages of advertisements for other history books published by Whitcombe and Tombs. This poem references Mersa Matruh, a port town on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt where Tom Meagher of the 14th Battalion may have served. Mersa Matruh was the backdrop for a series of battles between the German and British forces from mid- to late-1942.This poem was written by Avis Quarrell, an active community member of the Warrnambool RSL. Avis Quarrell was a former driver during the Second World War and is well known as a photographer and author in the Warrnambool area. The poem is well provenanced, bearing a dedication from the author herself and has significant interpretive capacity to discuss the North African campaigns, experiences of war and the history of the 14th Battalion when paired with the sketch.Poem printed in black ink on marled biege coloured paper in serif font, centred on page and signed by hand. Frame comprises of black plastic and is suspended by a wire on the reverse, which is screwed in on both the left and right hand sides. Poem is sealed in frame by framing tape, brown in colour. A gold adhesive label in the lower left hand corner indicates the framer and an inscription printed on paper is adhered onto the back of the frame.Underneath poem on front: “Avis Quarrell. Booval Hill was an early name for the area to the north east of the Princes Highway and Liebig St intersection. The winning horse being a horse named Bloodstain which is recorded on the mount of the photograph. This item has a social and historical significance. Socially, it shows an early association which Warrnambool has had with steeple-chasing, with jumps racing still representing an important part of the horseracing calendar. The photo has a strong link with Warrnambool, being one of many photographs taken by The Jordan studios which operated out of premises in Liebig Street .Two black and white photos mounted on card showing the first and second last jumps of the Booval Steeplechase in 1921. This album contains photos done on photographic paper while others are on exposed metal. Some are named, among them a Thomas or Edward Wickham, Fred Giles, Mrs. F Giles, Mary Humphrey Wickham, Jack Giles, Eliza Hornsby. Some of the photographs have been taken by Warrnambool photographers including Daniel Clarke. This album shows two different methods of photography which existed in the mid to late 19th century. With a number of the photos named it would suggest that there is some family connection between them which provokes an interest from a genealogical point of view. Diary covers the period from 9 March 1917 to 10 February 1918 on the Western Front. Lowe was later (Aug 1918) to be awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the Somme. Military Medal 'On the 11th/12th August, 1918, during operations on the SOMME, near PROYART, this man, just previous to the attack showed great devotion to duty in laying and maintaining alternative routes up to the front line, and after the attack had commenced he acted as linesmen, and throughout the operation, during which the lines were cut on several occasions, he went out under heavy shell and machine gun fire and repair the lines thereby enabling communication to be maintained and valuable information reaching Headquarters without delay. His splendid example inspired his comrades to volunteer to continue this most important work should he become a casualty.' This is the author's account of life in Northern Queensland. Edwin James Brady was an Australian poet. He was born at Carcoar, New South Wales, and was educated both in the United States and Sydney. He worked as a wharf clerk, a farmer, and journalist, and edited both rural and city newspapers. Brady established a writers' and artists' colony at Mallacoota, in 1909, and he continued to live there until his death in 1952. E. J. Brady was a leading figure of Australian literature. He has an association with Mallacoota, a small town in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. A 303 pp book with a hard back cloth covered bright orange cover. This is a useful reference tool.A stapled soft covered 26 pp brochure. The cover is white and inside a black frame is the title, "Melbourne Our City.
