The poem was written in 1942 by Jan Remco Theodoor Campert before he and seventeen other Dutch Resistance Fighters were condemed to death. Jan Campert was a Dutch journalist ,theatre critic and writer who lived in Amsterdam. During the German Occupation of the Netherlands in World War ii he was arrested for aiding the Jews.
