This photograph shows the Battery Goldmine at Club Terrace from 1896 - 1905. Gold was found at Club Terrace in 1896. One of the best finds at Club Terrace was the 'Ace of Clubs' mine which was later sold to the Mallina Gold Mining Company. Syd Cadwallader was appointed manager of the company. The gold was smelted and brought to Orbost on horseback. The only protection against thieves was a revolver and riding crop, which the manager always carried. The 'Ace of Clubs' was eventually closed as the company was unable to cope with the rising water problem. This bike belonged to Wally Paten who worked in the Orbost Butter Factory in the 1940's. Wally's father, Thomas Paten came to Orbost in 1893 and began growing fancy seeds in 1907 for H. James. He built the first levee bank in Orbost (ref. Mary Gilbert). The Comet bike was distributed by the Myer Emporium. "Comet:" was their house brand. They also sold the "Peter Pan". It was named "The Comet" probably because it was a fast bike. At the time it was an expensive bike . Ted Waterford made headlines riding Melbourne to Adelaide one way then return on a Comet in 1932.Bicycles have been a part of Australian life for more than 140 years. The bicycle soon began competing with the horse as a convenient and economical way for people to get around. This bicycle is an example of an early style which was used by an Orbost local.A man's road bicycle. It has 26inch wheels, back pedal brakes and has a wire basket attached to the curved handle bars. There is a leather seat in poor condition. The back wheel has a mudguard painted white. The bike is ungeared. This is probably the original frame with newer wheels. William Lambie was one of two war correspondents riding behind the Australians patrol when they left Rensburg Base. The objective was to determine the strength of the Boers south of Rensburg Siding. The group split in two. The group the journalists were with went on ahead. They were ambushed and surrounded by Boer horsemen and told to surrender. They ignored this and made a dash for the safety of the British lines. Lambie was shot in the head and died instantly. The other journalist was wounded and taken to the Boer's camp and tended, then later sent to hospital. Photo of an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo possibly in the 1940s. The matron and children are riding elephants. The matron is believed to be Dorothy Farmer, names of the children are not known but most appear in other photos from the photo album. From a photo album which contains photos of Holmbush and some of the excursions and events that happened there, appears to have been put together in the 1940s. Including trips to the zoo and picnics. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942. Kurt Winker was born in Germany in 1902 and was a survivor of the "Arandora Star". He was sent to Australia on the "Dunera" where he was interned at Tatura 1940-1945.A large white tree with bare limbs in centre of picture. There are fallen limbs at the foot of the tree. There are rows of other bare trees and other trees with green foliage as well as several tree stumps scattered among them. The sky and earth are sepia toned with a scattering of white fluffy clouds. Black and white coloured birds are in the sky and a black bird is perched on top of one of the branches of the tree. Walking in a line though the trees are eleven figures with red coats, black pant and white hats. Some are carrying axes on their shoulders. This item is an invitation to a dinner given by the Shire President and Mrs Hugh Cameron for the State Governor and Lady Fuller to be held in the Orbost Shire Hall on November 19, 1912. The governor and his wife left Melbourne on November 14 on a visit to East Gippsland. Hugh Cameron (1850-1921) was on the Orbost Shire council from 1892-1915. (more info. in O.D.H.S. newsletter -Tambo Shire) The Shire of Orbost was a local government area about 380 kilometres east of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres (3,608.9 sq mi), and existed from 1892 until 1994. Originally, Orbost was part of the Bairnsdale Road District which was created on 30 April 1867. Splitting away as part of the Shire of Tambo in 1882, Orbost was first incorporated as a shire in its own right as the Shire of Croajingolong on 30 May 1892. It received its present name on 17 February 1893. On 3 January 1913 part of its western riding was annexed to Tambo as its Cunninghame Riding. On 2 December 1994, the Shire was abolished, and merged with City and Shire of Bairnsdale, Shire of Tambo, most of Shire of Omeo and the Boole Boole Peninsula from Shire of Rosedale into the Shire of East Gippsland. Postcard as part of a series produced by Shire of Nillumbik for a children's photo project "Nillumbik Naturally" developed by FOCUS FORCE cleebrating Children's Week 2000. Richard Hartley Smith Abbott was the step son of Joseph Henry Abbott and continued on in the family tradition of entering into business, becoming a successful business man. He also held asperations to serve on local council and was elected a representative in the Mandurang riding in the Shire of Strathfieldsaye in 1887, served as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1917 - 1918 and was Secretary of the Bendigo Art Gallery for over 20 years. Like this father he continued to build local industries with a particular interest in tanning selling products locally and exporting to London. Probably taken 1890's before Orbost was separated from Tambo. The Shire of Tambo was a local government area about 320 kilometres east of Melbourne. The shire covered an area of 3,506.86 square kilometres and existed from 1882 until 1994. Tambo was first incorporated as a shire on 6 January 1882, splitting away from the Shire of Bairnsdale. On 30 May 1892 it lost three-quarters of its land area when the Shire of Orbost was incorporated. A small amount was re-annexed as Cunninghame Riding on 3 January 1913. On 2 December 1994, the Shire was abolished, and merged with the City and Shire of Bairnsdale, Shire of Orbost, most of the Shire of Omeo and the Boole Boole Peninsula from Shire of Rosedale into the Shire of East Gippsland. This item is from the "Barone" Collection. "Barone" (also known as "Seaview") was a stately Brighton home built at 9 Moule Avenue prior to 1855 and demolished in 1986. The house's residents included Edward Elgin Browne (during 1859-72), a Melbourne tea merchant, and the family and descendants of retired Scottish Army captain Archibald Black (during the period 1880-1970). Its neighbors included “St Ninians” owned by the Ward- Cole family, “Seacombe” owned by the Moule family, and the home of James Grahame and his family. The items in the "Barone" collection were largely donated by two of the house's later owners, Mrs Doris Halkyard and Mrs Brian Brandt.A pair of black wool twill women's jodhpurs from late 1800s to early 1900s. The jodhpurs feature a flat flap-front that buttons on either hip with four buttons on either side. The cut of the leg is full tapering through shaped panels to a slim fit over the calf. At the centre front of the leg at the shin, the pant leg is laced closed and finished with brown binding. From the back, the pant hangs loose and full over the bottom, tapering to a slim fit over the calf. Note: These jodhpurs are not a matching piece of the riding habit T0002.1. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This Classic Lighthorse bear is different to the previous special edition Lighthorse bear and was a limited edition in 2020/22. The Light Horse Brigades were mounted infantry made up of mostly young men from the country. They were experts at rough-riding from their lives in the bush and could navigate terrain easily for long periods with little food or water. Sometimes special editions of the bears were produced. A vintage 1950's hardcover children's book with the title Bonzo's Annual printed at the top in green lettering on the front cover.There is a large coloured illustration of the dog Bonzo riding on a rocket above the town rooftops with a smiling full moon in the sky. It is bound on the left side with faded grey fabric tape. The back cover is plain grey coloured.The frontispiece illustration shows Bonzo on a swing attached by ropes to a giraffe's long neck with a monkey and two toucan birds looking on. Mrs Blanche Shallard and Mrs Jean Spence enjoying an horderves with unknown waitress at the early residents reunion as part of the centenary celebrations for the Shire of Eltham in August 1971. The event was held in the West Riding Hall, Henry Petrie Community Centre, Montmorency. Blanche Shallard (nee Everard) (1905-2002) was an active member of the Montmorency community from 1933 when she and her husband Jack Shallard settled there. She volunteered for many community groups including the Diamond Valley Community Hospital, Greensborough, local schools and churches and the Eltham District Historical Society. Jean Spence and her husband Geoffrey were also residents of Montmorency. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' A hand plane is a tool for shaping wood Hand planes are generally the combination of a cutting edge, such as a sharpened metal plate, attached to a firm body, that when moved over a wood surface, take up relatively uniform shavings, by nature of the body riding on the 'high spots' in the wood, and also by providing a relatively constant angle to the cutting edge, render the planed surface very smooth. A cutter which extends below the bottom surface, or sole, of the plane slices off shavings of wood. Samuel Johnson is riding around Australia on a unicycle in an attempt to break a world record and raise money for the Garvan Institute (breakthrough medical research) . He made several points: a lack of attendance at the poll could bring the matter back to the Council table again; the representative of the Regional Committee is exploring some downward adjustment in Shire contributions; 2/3 of the Shire is reserved for water catchment or timber purposes, in effect a national asset; that the Council Sub-committee's report was sound; all Councillor's agree that new buildings are a necessity; and if we spend money on the loan to renovate old buildings what happens to the proposal for new buildings? A badge that was produced to promote a Vietnam Veterans' Motorcycle ride around Australia in 1996 in support of Legacy. An article in Trove shows a VetAffairs newsletter in July 1996 saying that 110 Vietnam veteran bikers spent 46 days in May and June 1996 riding over 14,000 kms to connect with veterans around the country. The Vietnam Veterans' Motorcycle Club organised the ride to raise awareness for Legacy who was looking after more than 122,000 widows and 2,000 children throughout Australia. The symbol of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. The bridge is not definitively identified, but is of similar construction style to other bridges built in rural areas around this time. Circa 1930”s and may be Ryders Bridge (Old Tawonga Bridge) which crosses the Kiewa River on Mountain Creek Rd Tawonga The first Tawonga bridge was built in 1884- destroyed by floods in 1916. New bridge constructed 1923 and destroyed in 1953. Present concrete bridge constructed in 1986 and named Ryders Bridge These wooden bridges were the only method for transporting stock and produce to market, transporting timber to the mills, sending and receiving mail and for local people to cross the many rivers in the area to go about their daily business. 1- Black and white photograph is glued onto heavy cardboard, which is yellowing with age.
