Slaughterhouse Hill was so named because Bennett's butchers had a slaughterhouse there.A view of Linton taken from Slaughterhouse Hill to the north-east of the town. Numerous buildings are identifiable in the photograph. In the middle foreground are the railway station, platform and station-master's house. The Grenville Standard building is visible in Clyde Street, and the Post Office and Bank of NSW buildings can be seen near the corner of Clyde and Sussex Streets. In the distance (along Sussex Street) the Royal Standard Hotel and the Shire Offices (original building) can be seen. The photograph formed part of the collection of WHS Dickinson and was presented to the Kew Historical Society by his daughter in 2018. The point of view is from the south end of the building, looking towards the stage at the north end of the main hall. This book belonged to Emily Gascoigne Stratford. She married Barnard Mathews in Victoria in 1856 and the births of seven children are recorded in Victoria. Carshalton (the home of the aunt who gave the book?) is a town in Surrey, England. So far no connection has been found between the Mathews family and Warrnambool.This book has no known local provenance but it is of interest for its antiquarian value. This is a hard cover book of 381 pages. It has a brown cover with embossed ornamentation and gold lettering on the spine. The front cover is partly detached from the binding and the pages are gilt-edged. There is a black and white illustration on the second page. The cover is very faded and stained and there is some staining throughout the pages. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. ‘Mifs Emily Gazoigne Stratford, From her Aunt, F.S. Banners were used at schools on sports days to identify the school and/or the team. Bogong is a local town between Mt Beauty and Falls Creek and was established by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The school was opened on 28th Jan. 1941 and closed c1986. The banner probably belonged to the Bogong school and was used for sport carnivals and other events that included mixing with other schools.Wooden pole with yellow/orange satin shield cover on top. The fashion dictated to by the larger cities and towns were for some smaller items of house hold furniture encompassed by homes in the region, not only because of practicality but also for longevity of the item it protected.The significance of this item in showing that although the region was to a small degree isolated from the "latest" fashion of house hold dressage, it was to a certain degree not regional and that the fashion of the day in large cities and towns was instilled through magazines and Country Women,s organisations.Fine cotton table runner. Middle section has a 2cm wide crochet insert around it with another border of cotton around it 2cm wide. In the 1960s Orbost had a population of 4000 and was a major tourist attraction in Eastern Victoria with sufficient accommodation and facilities. Ballarat Teachers College commenced in 1926 with 61 students with the aim of providing trained teachers for rural schools. It initially operated from the Dana Street Primary School while the Ballarat East Town Hall was renovated for the colleges use.
