The WWI Death Plaque (Dead Man's Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who had fallen in the Great War between 1914 and 1918. John Mercer Walker entered ballarat College in 1902 and was Dux of the school in 1904. He enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance and served on Gallipoli. He transferred to 21st Squadron AFC in November 1917 and served in Palestine. He was killed a 22 August 1918 and buried at the Ramleh War Cemetery. Of the 305 Ballarat College old collegians who enlisted in WW1 65 gave their lives for their country. This 'death penny' is representative of the incredible sacrifice given by this huge percentage of the school's community. Round disk cast in bronze gunmetal, which incorporates the following; an image of Britannia holding an oak spray with leaves and acorns, an imperial lion, two dolphins representing Britain's sea power, the emblem of Imperial Germany's eagle being torn to pieces by another lion. He had 5 years service prior to enlisting in the AIF on Instructional Staff in 16th Light Horse with the rank of A/Staff Sgt. This money, belt made of soft leather, would have been used in the mid 1900's by horse riding traders or wealthy property owners. It could also have been used by miners or other commercial business men. The main criteria for such a belt is security for valuables during travel on horseback. Commercial traders who plied their wares on horseback or caravans during a period where poor roads and flood prone rivers could dislodge wallets or money "sacks".The Kiewa Valley in the early 1900's was an environment which was frequented by the "canny" travelling salesman using dirt tracks and having to cross swollen rivers and creeks throughout the year. Travelling times within the rural areas in and surrounding the valley called for more frequent stops in bush lands. Camping presented itself with great challenges not to loose small cumbersome coin and notes. Local banks were of short supply and although bartering was a thriving method of transactions within the Valley traders from other regions were not so forth coming. Where ever possible local "trades" were called upon more than in city areas for limited products of a rural incline.This "vintage" handcrafted money belt has been professionally made circa 1950's. It appears as though it might have been made in a saddlery. There are five pockets each fastened by black painted "press studs". The stitching is of a high standard and the pockets are large and well defined. The buckle is circular with one fastening pin.handcrafts, leather work, vintage money belt, personal effects.

This tuyere (word from French origin) was used by professional blacksmiths and or cattlemen before and during the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme was being constructed. The need to use a furnace or forge in the shaping of metal rods, horse shoes and pipes is both a rural necessity and a construction, on site requirement. The "inventiveness" of cattlemen and construction workers to produce metal objects not available "off the shelf" is one of the inherent traits not only of rural self sufficiency but in the "pioneer" days of rural isolation one of survival.This tuyere is of great significance to the Kiewa Valley and its regions because it highlights one of the greatest strengths of the rural (especially isolated) life and its folk living there, and that is the great human factor of adaptability and survival techniques in sometimes harsh and demanding environmental circumstances. The inventiveness and the attitude, "she'll be right mate", demonstrates life on the land where specialised blacksmith activities can be found in non "professionals" because of the fact that "someone" has to do the job. This is one of the differences between country "rural" life and that found in cities and larger towns.This iron cone shaped tuyere has a small hole (diamenter 25mm) starting within an ever enlarging cone (amplification of the air pressure going through) delivering varying hot or extremely hot air into a furnace or hearth which intensifies the heat to allow the "shaping" of metal objects. This card from the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club is a pass for a lady for the meeting of 5th May 1914. This day was part of the three-day 1914 May Racing Carnival which featured the Warrnambool Cup and the Grand Annual Steeplechase. The first organized horse race in Warrnambool was held in 1848 at Jetty Flat and the Warrnambool Racecourse was first in use in 1858 with the Warrnambool Racing Club established in 1873. The Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club was established in 1859 and was the only Amateur Turf Club in Victoria. It no longer exists This card is of interest as it is a memento of the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club, an important early sporting club in Warrnambool. It is also an early memento of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival, today a premier sporting event in the city and beyond and it is officially a Victorian Major Event. This is a small piece of light cardboard, blue on one side and white on the other. The card has rounded edges. On the blue side it has the emblem of the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club and gold printing. This album contains a number of photos taken around the Otways. They depict a number of people with horses, buggies and tents along bush tracks. There are scenes of Lochard Gorge and the Curdies River at Peterborough, as well as farming scenes. The Otway Ranges was a popular place for day trips and small holidays for the people of the district. Warrnambool and District Historical Society has albums from the Swinton family which depict similar scenes. Dress of the people in the photos would indicate that this trip occurred around the turn of the 20th century. This album has artistic and aesthetic significance as the photos contained within this album are quite beautiful. Robert Logan selected Lot 28 of the Village Settlement in 1896 and lived there until his death in 1936. Historian John Lundy-Clarke tells how Logan planted his land with plums, peaches and apples and also grew raspberries, beans, cabbages and lettuces. He also planted a small patch of oats that he harvested to feed his horse. Photograph - Black and white of ESCo tram 8 towing a former horse tram as a trailer. Tram 8 has been fitted with windscreens and is in a one-man operation configuration with the rear entry closed off. There are passengers in the tram but there do not appear to be any in the trailer. Given that the weather blinds of tram 8 are drawn or closed, it is likely a winter day, and possibly the trailer is being used as the bicycle transfer car between the depot and the city office. The photographer is not known. This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel D J Hunter OAM RFD when serving with the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Upon mechanisation in December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was re-titled 20th Motor Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles). It was equipped with Bren Gun Carriers and deployed to airfield defence in Northern Territory. In 1943, the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea, where it conducted patrols along the coast and up rivers using barges and canoes. Returning to Australia in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion then disbanded several months later at the end of the war. On March 2, 1940, Sir Winston Dugan, Governor of Victoria unveiled the busts of the six first prime ministers of Australia at a ceremony on the long avenue of Horse Chestnuts. The donor, Richard Armstrong Couch, was born in Ballarat in 1868. Edmund Barton (1849 –1920) was an Australian politician and judge who served as the first Prime Minister of Australia, in office from 1901 to 1903. He was appointed prime minister on 1 January 1901, the day on which the new federal constitution came into effect. The Prime Ministers Avenue is a feature of national significance, set in the magnificent Horse Chestnut Avenue of the Gardens. The 28 Prime Ministers of Australia are displayed as bronze portraits mounted on polished granite pedestals. This is one of a series of eighteen plaques which commemorated some of the winner of the Grand Annual Steeplechase which is held each year in Warrnambool. The first Grand Annual was held in 1872 as the Warrnambool Handicap Steeplechase. Mudeet won the race in 1960 with Warrnambool jockey E Byrne. Mudeet was trained by Alex Fullarton ,a leading cross country rider and later trainer of jumps horses. This series of plaques were painted by local artist Leslie Lamey and were originally in the members enclosure at the Warrnambool RacecourseThese items relate to a significant part of Warrnambool's sporting and social history..1 Painted white rectangular tin plaque with rolled edges with painting of jockeys silks and cap. Small black enamelled cast iron tobacco cutter mounted on wooden base. K36 painted on the bottom. Letter located in correspondence file ( 21.5.2019 by curator) 'This cutter was used to cut plug tobacco suitable for smoking in a pipe. It belonged to John Temple Rileywo died at the age of 97 at Hobart, Tasmania, October 1970. John Temple Riley led an eventful life. As a youth he trained and rode race horses at the Higginbotham stables quite near the Morphetville racecourse. He won one South Australian St. Ledger and rode the famous Carbine at track training only. In 1967 he was the only living person who had been astride Carbine. He served in Africa with the Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen. He was a sergeant in the Australian Light Horse Regiment in the Egyptian and Eastern Desert and at Gallipoli. He won an Italian decoration as well as Australian citations, he was promoted to Lieutenant J.H. Riley. He met with success in the mining field with his tin strike at Heemskirk on the West Coast.'
