1 - Colour slide of the former Geelong A Power Station on the corner of Yarra St and Corio Tce (now Brougham St). First portion on the corner built by the Electric Lighting and Traction Co of Australia. The Geelong tram depot, operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Co was incorporated within the structure during 1912. Operated by the State Electricity Commission from 1930 until the 1960's. Photo taken prior to the demolition of the chimney during the late 1960's. 2 - Colour slide dated April 1971, taken after the chimney has been demolished. Yields information about the former Geelong A power station prior to its partial demolition and incorporation into a shopping centre. Colour-tinted postcard, titled in red upper left: “RIVER YARRA AT STUDLEY PARK, KEW”. On the divided reverse, the card is addressed to “MISS JOLLEY / MELB. TRAM & O[MNIBUS]. CO / BOURKE STREET, MELB”. The sender has dated the card 21.12.08. In the upper right corner, there is a pink Victorian one penny postage stamp; sent from Melbourne on 22DE 08. (The division of the reverse of the postcard, allowing a message to be written on one half and the address on the other, was not permitted in Australia until 1905.) The manufacturer of the postcard is indicated by the initials “W.T.P”, printed in a green floral diamond, printed centre top. This was the trademark of WT Pater, printers & stationers. William Thompson Pater was born in Melbourne in 1861. His business at 271 Little Collins Street offered Christmas cards, booklets, calendars, and leather goods as well as postcards and albums.Hand-tinted postcard of the River Yarra in Studley Park, Kew. Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Barnes.The first subdivision of Goldthorns created the Goldthorns Hill Estate. Following that subdivision, seven additional lots were offered between Normanby Road, Argyle Road and Lady Loch’s Drive on the proviso that the estate, including Goldthorns was not sold as a single lot. The subdivision plan advises that the lots are situated in one of the most charming and popular residential areas in Kew and is surrounded by modern homes. Typically, the subdivision plan proposes the advantage of its proximity to Cotham Road and the tram to Collins Street. Because of the elevation of Goldthorns, much is made of the ‘bright, sunny and extensive outlook to the Northern Ranges’ and that it overlooks the Yarra Valley. One of the more interesting aspects of the plan is that it shows the outline of Goldthorns in the mid to late 1920s. Victoria Bridge is a riveted and welded steel Warren truss bridge over the Yarra River completed in 1884 to a design by Fraser & Chase following a controversial design competition held in 1880. Funds for the bridge's construction were provided by the councils of Collingwood, Hawthorn, Kew and Richmond. The contract was awarded to Mr P. Platt. Charles Rowand was officially appointed Supervising Engineer in 1883. The winning design was based on the theoretical work of William Charles Kernot (1845-1909) who campaigned for economy in public works design and the application of scientific principles in engineering. ... The bridge was widened in 1890 by the addition of a third line of truss on new piers on the up stream side to carry horse trams. Work commenced in 1914 to convert the horse tramway to an electric tramway by the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust, part of the Trust's extension of its tramway into the eastern suburbs between 1913-18. In 1915 the bridge was further strengthened to accommodate the extra weight of electric trams and widened by the addition of two six feet cantilever footpaths. During this period the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust erected two ornamental gantries over the roadway to support overhead wires for the electric tramway. Further widening and reconditioning of the bridge took place in 1933, including the addition of four new welded trusses, two intermediate and two on the outside. The latter were supported on new cantilevered truss cross beams attached to the top of the piers. Stop 115 on route 55 (changed to route 58 in May 2017) is in Queensbridge St at the Southbank/Casino tram stop.Demonstrates the form of tram stop that The Met used to replace former tram stop signs and shows the typical tram stop sign of the era. Photos show the construction of King St overpass in Flinders St which was part of the project to construct a bridge over the Yarra River and provide a new southern outlet road between the city and eventually St Kilda Junction. The overpass construction was commenced in 1959 with tramway works first commencing. It was demolished in 2005. 1 - looking west at Market St. 2 - looking east from Spencer and Flinders St with the railway viaduct behind. 3 - Tram lines diverted onto the new overpass. One of a pair of posed photographs of Car 7 in Corio Tce. prior to opening day. The tramline curves to the right into the depot whose entrance lies between Blakiston & Co on the right and the MESCo's offices on the corner of Yarra St., to the left. Note its ornamental turret, removed in the 20s. The carefully arranged poseurs are employees of the Company, recognisable from the other photographs. The second photograph (Item No. 8617 - large print on wall in board room) shows the opposite end of the tram with the Geelong Club and Mac's Hotel in the background. The same characters are aboard, differently arranged. Early 1912.
