This view of Sunbury Railway Station was taken from the corner of Brook and Evans Streets two years after the station underwent refurbishment and extensions and a carpark was constructed adjacent to the station. The Sunbury & District Heritage Association Inc. has a photograph P0663 of the station taken a century ago from the same place, when Sunbury was a small country town. The photograph of The Nook is one of a series of photographs that was included in an exhibition organised by the former Sunbury & District Heritage Association in March 2001 and displayed in the George Evans Museum. Local; people were invited to submit photographs for the exhibition. The wooden outhouse was erected in the former Sunbury Asylum grounds and was a popular outdoor building where the patients and staff relaxed while walking around the grounds.Patients were encouraged to spend time outdoors and the extensive and elevated grounds provided plenty of space. ANZAC Day 2021 The Ukrainian Association Sunshine (UAS), joined other community organisations in commemorating ANZAC Day on April 25th 2021. UAS members gathered at the Sunshine RSL cenotaph for the Dawn Service during which, President Andrew Makohon and Oksana Makohon laid a wreath on behalf of the Ukrainian Community. Members and families later gathered at the UAS Hall in Ardeer for a flag raising ceremony and breakfast. Our youngest members took part in raising and then lowering the Australian and Ukrainian flags to half mast, learning about the significance of the ceremony and the importance of Australia’s National Day of Remembrance. A history of three La Trobe University student union activists in the early 1970s - Brian Pola, Barry York and Fergus Robinson - who disobeyed the University's order to stay off campus. They were subsequently imprisoned at Pentridge Prison for several months although no criminal charges were made known. The account of on-campus student politics is fascinating and complex in comparison to contemporary student unionism. At the time of their release and to date, the University has not apologised to the "La Trobe Three" for what happened. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The dinner took place on Tuesday 25th November 1958 at The Naval and Military Club; there is no indication of what the occasion might have been. The two caricatures are clearly of the same person and are signed by Pat Hanna, in the same style as the drawings in 01293 and 01290, it is possible that 'Donno' might have been Donovan Joynt though his name isn't in the autographs. (Donovan Joynt was a prominent original Legatee and VC winner in France in 1918, and looks similar to the drawing). It may not have been an official Legacy occasion but simply a gathering of Legatees at the Naval and Military Club. The artist Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy. Legacy kept some of his works in the archive.As well as demonstrating the conviviality of Legatees, it attests to the food usually offered at dinners in the 1950s. The 'Papa au Rum' listed for dessert might have been a misprint for 'Baba au Rhum' which was popular at the time. Informal 12 hole golf event, played on Grand Final weekend. This event was started by a group of friends when there were few official golf tournaments played at Peterborough. The event was a stroke event with "mystery handicaps" ie you didn't know your handicap until you finished playing. The event was played on the Sunday of Grand Final weekend (except initially); Friday night traditionally was tea at Boggy Creek Pub and a Fishing Comp on Saturday. The name came about because three of the regular players, Ivan Voss, Bob Loader and R. McKendrick had a hut at the top of the dunes near Crofts Bay. They had a clinker boat on the beach as well. They subsequently built a house in Childers St. It ceased when the original participants were no longer able to play. The date of the first winner is 1980, last recorded winner is 1995.
