The Victorian State Election was held on 24 November 2018. ALP candidates were Sarah de Santis (Ripon), Michaela Settle (Buninyong) and Juliana Addison (Wendouree). The Andrews/ALP government was returned in a landslide victory. The footage in this recording comes from a party held at Ballarat Trades Hall on the night of the election. Candidates for Wendouree and Buninyong, Ms Addison and Ms Settle, were successful. The ABCC (Australian Building and Construction Commission) was first created during the government of John Howard (LNP). The ABCC claims to, "ensuring that building work in Australia is carried out fairly, efficiently and productively—for the benefit of all employers and workers in the industry, and for the benefit of the Australian economy as a whole." Conversely, the organisation has been claimed by unions and workers to be anti-union and detrimental to the working conditions of employees. A fact sheet from the CFMMEU is attached to this entry. Malcolm Turnbull was Prime Minister from 2015 to 2018. He became Prime Minister after deposing Tony Abbott, in a leadership challenge. The strike took place in 1891 when pastoralists wanted to reduce shearers' wages and bring in non-union workers at lower rates. The author, Julian Stuart, was one of the leaders of the shearers' strike and was jailed for three years with hard labour. Bernard O'Dowd, 1954
Bernard O'Dowd was an Australian poet and anarchist. He was born in Beaufort in 1866 and worked at different times as a teacher, librarian and parliamentary draftsman. He was dismissed from his position at St Alipius' school in Ballarat for heresy. He had a particular interest in the Federation of Australia and formation of the Constitution, which features in his poem "Australia". O'Dowd co-edited Tocsin with Jack Andrews. Tocsin was a labor newspaper in Melbourne. Others involved with the newspaper include Edward Findley and, for a short time, Norman Lindsay.
