The feathers of the underparts and back are slate-grey with an edging of pink and yellow. The Great Spotted Woodpecker is found throughout Europe and Asia. They are generally solitary birds and do not migrate unless found in northern climates. They are omnivorous and can extend their tongue when feeding on insects, insect larvae, and seeds, among other things. They generally only stay with the same mating partner for one season and are extremely territorial. The Great Spotted Woodpecker generally has red eyes and a deep red lower belly. The males have a red nape, whereas the females do not. They have a white upper chest and white and black head, back, tail feathers, and wings. Juveniles are less vibrant in colour and their undertails and lower bellies are a dirty pink or brown. On 1 April 1991, ‘A’ Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles linked with 4/19 Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment to form a new regiment of two squadrons: VMR Squadron and PWLH Squadron. Olive Wilkinson was born in 1917 in Ararat. She and her husband both worked at the Ovens Benevolent Home, with her as a temporary matron when the need arose, and her husband as the Superintendent. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke. Mrs Olive Wilkinson's account of her life in Beechworth and the local area during the 20th century is historically and socially significant to the cultural history of the region. She details historical events pertaining to Beechworth and her family. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth'. While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved. This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. It holds up 40 minutes of recordings on each side. Allwood at Hurstbridge was named and first settled in 1837 by the Haley family. A house was built of one round of vertical slabs (red gum). Later it was the Hurst family home where Henry Hurst was shot by Burke the Bushranger on 4 October 1886. George Gray took over the property and the original home was eventually demolished. Gray, a fruit grower established an orchard and Allwood Nurseries which became a very successful business growing and exporting. This is probably around the time when this photo was taken where rows of fruit trees can be seen in the foreground. A house and associated buildings, possibly part of the nursery are behind. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Kilby Lodge (c.1845-c.1922). William Oswin purchased Crown Land Lots 52 & 53 in 1845. These lots ran north from an old bullock track [later Kilby Road] to the Yarra, and east to Burke Road. Oswin purchased a neighbouring Lot in 1851, separated by the bullock track from the rest of the farm. Oswin built ‘Kilby Lodge’ and, with his brother, farmed dairy cattle on the site. Oswin’s descendants owned the farm into the 1890s. New subdivisions of Kilby and neighbouring farms in the 1920s changed the rural nature of north Kew. Housing and large recreation reserves replaced dairy farms and market gardens. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. While the first successful land sales in Boroondara occurred in Hawthorn in 1843, and Kew in 1845, these areas were to be without local pounds until April 1858, when the Governor of Victoria, in accordance with Act 18 Victoria No 30, was pleased to direct the establishment of a Pound at Glass’s Creek on that part of land bounded by the Kilby Road, Burke Road and High Street. While the Governor was required to proclaim the establishment of a pound, the appointment of a poundkeeper was the responsibility of the Justices of the Peace in the local Court of Petty Sessions. The Pound took its name from the most distinctive natural feature of the area, Glass’s Creek, named after the early pastoralist Thomas Glass.The register is of historic significance as an indicator of suburban life in the second half of the 19th Century. It shows how farming and city life on the urban fringe were intimately connected. High Street, Kew is the main Road in Kew. It was once also known as Bulleen Road, or Main Street. This section of the road is in Kew, although the narrow section on the right hand side of the photo is now Kew East. High Street progresses through a number of significant road junctions: beginning at Barkers Road; progressing through the intersection of Studley Park Road, Denmark Street and Princess Street at Kew Junction; branching left at the junction with Cotham Road; before reaching the junction with Valerie Street and Harp Road. The land in North Kew between the Outer Circle Railway and the River Yarra was released in sections. This release included 80 lots. Most of this area was released during the Depression years in the early 1930s.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.One part of a massive subdivision of the Old Golf Links Estate in North Kew of 80 allotments bordering Sutherland Avenue, Ramsay Avenue, Belford Road, Beresford Street and Coleman Avenue. Inset on the plan at the top left, the route of the Outer Circle Railway is clearly marked. The Kew Golf Links is identified in its current location. The land on which Greenacres Golf Club was to be constructed is at this time marked as ‘Recreation Ground’. The ‘new bridge’ over the Yarra at Burke Road is also marked on the inset map. Twenty-five grand allotments were offered for sale in the subdivision known as the Kia Ora Estate in Balwyn in the early 1930s. The streets identified in the subdivision include Whitehorse Road, Barnsbury Road, Campbell Road, Mont Albert Road and Burke Road. The lots were advertised for £10 deposit, with the balance to be paid over 5 years at 5 per cent per annum. The lots bordering Whitehorse Road were nominated as potential valuable shop sites, while the Mont Albert Road lots were advertised as having ‘wonderful views’. The Outer Circle Railway Line is shown traversing the subdivision. Two colour photo of Cato Park ornamental entrance gate that replaced the old entrance gates in c 1930's. The new entrance gates were donated by Mr. Frederick Cato and the park renamed from Victoria Park to Cato Park. The coat of Arms over the entrance gate was donated to Stawell Borough Council in 1926 by Mr. P. Whelan a native of Stawell. Mr. Whelan or better known as "Whelan the wrecker" demolished more than a quarter of central Melbourne buildings so new buildings could be erected on the old sites. The coat of arms came from "Burke & Wills Building" that once stood on the corner of Russell & Collins Street Melbourne. Two colour photographs of Cato Park ornamental entrance gate. The Kew Main Drain is a barrel drain that was created in the 1930s, and follows the route of the former Connor's Creek from the vicinity of Genazzano FCJ College to the Yarra River in East KewImportant and verifiable evidence of the construction methods used by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works in building the Kew Main Drain, before its reconstruction in c.1985.Original print colour positive photograph of the Kew Main Drain, provided on 14/12.84 to the Chief Engineer of the City of Kew, Ian Poulter, by the Supervising Engineer (Works), Southern and Eastern Drainage, Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works. From the 1940s Melbourne Legacy ran residences for children of deceased servicemen. In the 1980s it was decided to sell the final property as the requirement for care had dwindled. These photos show the auction day at Blamey House (previously known as Harelands), from the street the auction flag and 'For Sale' sign can be seen. The photos show a large group of people watching the auction names are unknown. The property at 5 Willesmere Rd Kew was formerly known as Harelands. It was renamed Blamey House when the previous Blamey House (at 1267 Burke Road) was sold in late 1970s. Black and white photo of the residents at Holmbush. It was one of the residences that was run by Melbourne Legacy for junior legatees. The residences were run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers had been servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. The year is not known but it is approximately 1947, and was in an album which was a collection of photos taken in the 1940s and 1950s. The label with the photo says it was taken by Legatee Harry Rigby. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942. In 1957 Holmbush was renamed Blamey House until it was sold in 1977.It shows that Melbourne Legacy established residences to aid children of deceased servicemen complete their education, take further education and find employment.Black and white photo in an album of the junior legatees at Holmbush.The label is handwritten in blue pen and says "I was at Holmbush when this photo was taken by the late Legatee Harry Rigby c.1947.
