For many years the temperance section of the community was housed in a small building in View Street, Sandhurst. The Temperance Society was formed in 1857 and the foundation stone for a new building was laid in 1895. The new building was designed and erected under the supervision of Mr. J. Blair at a cost of 1,500 pounds. The large hall was used for meeting purposes and the offices were leased out. Letter (handwritten in black pen) sent by Monument Hill Consolidated (Bendigo ) Old Violet Street, Bendigo, dated 16th January 1935, to the Chairman and Directors. Letter deals with transfer of an area north of Rowan St., on 'your' battery lease to Nell Gwynne (BML) Mines. Recommends the right to lay a pipeline across the area from the dam to the proposed battery site, and also the transfer to your company of an area on the eastern side, as near as possible to the area granted on the north. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Property now known as Eversley, formerly Nulmore then Brampton. From Caulfield Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward In 1888, C. Hume owned lots 61, 62 and 63 in the Kooyong Park Estate, on the northwest corner of Gladstone Parade and Clarence Street. In 1889 Thomas B. Jackson, architect, of Shoobra Road, purchased the land and in the same year built a ten roomed brick house on lot 63 and part lot 62. Jackson leased the property to William Dalrymple in 1890. By 1894, the property was owned by P. Langwill and leased to James Ainslie, an accountant. By 1899, Frederick Henriques had moved into the house, which was known as ''Nulmore". In 1910, the house was vacant. In 1920, it was leased to Augustine Barbeta who continued to live there in 1930. By 1934, the house was renamed ''Brampton". ''Nulmore" is locally important as an unusually imposing Elizabethan influenced villa in Caulfield, comparing with nos. 34 and 25 Gladstone Parade. Its link with local architect Thomas B Jackson is of interest. This is a Rose's Australia stereocard of Morningside. Built c1875, Morningside was the residence of John and Catherine D'Alton, it was located on site of present (2010) Colonial Motor Inn. c1900 it was owned by Langley family and was taking in paying guests. In 1909 it was leased by James and Grace D'Alton who continued to run a small guest house. In the late 1920's a small building was erected to serve as PO and telephone exchange. C1980 the guest house closed. In 1982 Morningside was demolished.A computer print of a State Library of Victoria Catalogue entry for a stereograph card. William & Mary at first leased land in the area of the ‘Dendy Special Survey Brighton 1841’ and then purchased the property with the pioneer cottage 1868 & 1869. William & Elizabeth established a market garden and raised 13 children. 1888 they built a larger 2nd house in front of the original cottage. William died in 1902 and Mary sold 9 acres in 1908 to W. .Snowden Anderson – it later became Joyce Park where the reconstructed Box Cottage Museum now stands. After Elizabeth died her daughters Ada and Violet lived on the 1 acre property until 1917 when August Reitman, a potter and monumental mason, leased the house and land. He established his pottery business and purchased the property in 1935. The business moved in 1953 but continued to use the cottage as a workshop/ storeroom until it was sold to Lewis Timber P/L in 1970. Elizabeth & William Box settled in the pioneer Cottage in Jasper Road East Brighton 1868 and established a market garden whilst raising their 13 children. This Cottage was reconstructed in Joyce Park, Ormond 1984 and is the home of City of Moorabbin Historical Society. Between 1869 and 1892, the Ringwood antimony mines produced more than 3,500 tons of antimony ore, which represented bout 15 per cent of Victoria's antimony production for that period. Much greater amounts were later taken from the mines at Costerfield and the Ringwood mines lapsed into obscurity. "'Wuurong'' homestead (originally 'Basin Banks') was built c1867 by Donald McNicol (1812-1903) shepherd, store owner and pastoralist. The property was leased c1870 by James Dawson (1806-1900) Guardian of the Aborigines, pastoralist and environmentalist. James Dawson renamed the property 'Wuurrong'. This recipe book has been compiled by Mrs W. Moffatt to raise funds for the Wickliffe Hall Improvement Fund (1915). Wickliffe is a small town in Western Victoria situated on the banks of the Hopkins River on the Glenelg Highway 100 kilometres from Warrnambool. Jessie Moffatt (nee McLellan) married William Moffatt in 1885 and died in 1938. William Moffatt leased the Berrambool Estate near Wickliffe in 1893, bought it in 1903 and the Moffatts lived there until their deaths in the 1930s. This recipe book is of interest because of its social history, telling us what recipes were popular in the early 1900s and the use made of a recipe book to raise funds for local community funds. The book is also of interest because it is an example of the voluntary work done by a woman in the Western District in the early 20th century. The book is also of interest because the names of some of those who contributed the recipes are listed and many of them have local connections. The Warrnambool names listed include Williams and McCormick. This is a soft cover book of 149 pages. The cover is grey with dark blue lettering and some ornamental patterning. The book contains over 1400 recipes and many advertisements for businesses in Victoria at the back and front of the book. There are two loose sheets of paper with recipes. The land surrounding Happy Hollow farm at Plenty was purchased by Francis Wickham in 1840. The land was later subdivided and held by various owners including Charles Partington (1875) and John McLaughlin who leased the property in 1892 to Robert Emmett Whatmough who erected the first dwelling on the property. The land was later owned by Mrs Betty Bell and was purchased by Parks Victoria in 1994 to form part of the Plenty Gorge Parklands. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Company Ltd was established in 1888 and in 1935 developed a relationship with Kraft Foods Australia whereby Kraft leased premises from WCB. The two companies shared the milk collected to make their core products of cheese (Kraft) and butter and milk for domestic use (WCB). The last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre presented by E J Carroll. The theatre was managed by Frank Talbot Pty Ltd during his long lease of the theatre following his major renovations when Henry White the architect built an intimate theatre inside the old Athenaeum Hall. In addition to musical accompaniment for the film, the orchestra, and sometimes singers entertained audiences before the films commenced and during interval. Filmed on location in the jungles of Siam (Thailand). Programs, printed for early films at the Athenaeum Theatre provided the full program for the audience in the centre pages and gave background information about the story and the actors. Chang was the last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre before the Jazz Singer changed cinema going for ever with the introduction of both vocal and musical sound.
