Paul Costa is the eldest of four brothers who grew up at Falls Creek, attended school there and at Mt Beauty and were members of the Falls Creek Race Club. He originally raced in alpine skiing but changed to mogul skiing at the age of 16. His first event was the Falls Creek Summit Masters, where he finished second in the Open Class. In 1993 Paul Costa placed fourth at the FIS Freestyle World Championships in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria. He was selected to represent Australia in the Winter Olympics at Lillehammer in 1994, joining his brother Adrian in that team. During his mogul skiing career, Paul Costa collected 26 World Cup starts. The Hopkins River One Mile Swim started in 1960 as part of an Aquatic Day to raise funds for the Warrnambool Olympic Pool. Since 1961 a measured One Mile Course (1600 metres) was used, the course being up river for approx. 286 metres, then to the bridge and back to the jetty to the finishing line. It was a handicap race. The race was abandoned after 46 years (2005). The booklet is of some importance as it gives the details of the Hopkins River One Mile Race, an event that was a prominent one in Warrnambool for 46 years. The booklet records the achievements of the competitors and the work of the committees involved and will be useful for researchers. This is a booklet containing a souvenir program for the 40th Annual One Mile Swim in the Hopkins River in 1999 and a Full Race History from 1960 to 1999. It has been produced in-house by the Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club and has a blue cardboard front cover and a grey back cover. The photocopied and typed pages have been bound with black plastic. The contents include newspaper cuttings, photocopies of photographs, lists of winners and a list of the race’s sponsors. As of 2016 Tony Benson is the last Australian to win the 5000m at one of the major meets (now called Diamond League). That year Tony Benson was undefeated in Europe something no Australian has done since. He was also undefeated in the USA in early 1972 and probably would have medalled in Munich 1972 except for an incurring a hamstring injury 10 days before the race AND not being able to find the team medical doctors until some 16 hrs after the injury due to them being away from the village. Despite running with a torn hamstring Tony Benson broke Ron Clarke's Australian Olympic record for the 5000m but had no 'kick' and finished 7th in the heat. None of those who made the final had ever beaten Benson. Kip Keino and Tony Benson became friends. Keino received the first ever Olympic Laureate Award by the IOC at the Rio opening ceremony in 2016. A newspaper article promoting the annual demonstration in The Sun on 1 October 1960. The photo shows a group of young girls in Legacy uniforms. The story says that boys and girls from Legacy were rehearsing for their annual demonstration at the Olympic swimming stadium. About 1000 children take part in the display. Highlights were physical trying exhibitions by the boys and ballet scenes by the girls. The theme of the show is the activities of Legacy throughout the year. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. The International Stoke-Mandevile Games, held in Tel-Aviv in 1968, were later classified as the third edition of the Paralympics. The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games (or IWAS World Games) are a multi-sport competition for athletes with a disability, which under the former name of the International Stoke Mandeville Games were the forerunner of the Paralympic Games. The competition has been formerly known as the World Wheelchair and Amputee Games, the Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games, the Stoke Mandeville Games, the World Wheelchair Games, and in the 1960s and 1970s was often referred to as the Wheelchair Olympics. The Games were originally held in 1948 by neurologist Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who organized a sporting competition involving World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital rehabilitation facility in Aylesbury, England, taking place concurrently with the first post-war Summer Olympics in London. In 1952, the Netherlands joined in the event, creating the first international sports competition for the disabled. In 1960, the Ninth Stoke Mandeville Games were held in Rome, Italy, following that year's Olympic Games. In 1956 television came to Australia, just in time for the Melbourne Olympics. Television sets were very expensive, they were comparable to buying a car. This television set was purchased in Wonthaggi in 1962. it originally had a 12ft long trailing antenna. Mr Ernie Baker of Farmers Lane, Orbost, set it up to receive Channel 12 (in black and white) with power generated from the Orbost Butter Factory.This item is an example of one of the first television sets to be used in Orbost.A television set in a wooden case (laminated ply). This is a photograph of the first committee of the Sunbury Swimming Club which was formed in 1916. The club used the pool at The Nook near Eadie Street. The area had shade trees, a drink fountain, seats, change rooms and diving boards. In 1966 an Olympic size swimming pool was opened in LIgar Street, as a result of a whole community effort.
