Lillie Duncan was a member of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, the women's auxiliary group of the Mission to Seafarers organisation. The LHLG was formed in 1902 and organised social events for visiting seafarers and were directly responsible for much of the fundraising for the construction of the facility at 717 Flinders Street. As a member of the Guild, Lillie was expected to entertain and support visiting seafarers, although within a strict set of rules. This letter, along with a number of others, was sent to Lillie from abroad.This letter, along with a number of others sent to Lillie Duncan by visiting seafarers, underscore the social conventions of the time and the work of the Mission to Seafarers in provide comfort and support to visiting seafarers. The letters speak of the many events and activities undertaken at the Mission and provide a snapshot of the era.Letter addressed to Miss L. Part 0099.1 Envelope Part 0099.2 Letter Both the envelope and the letter are creamy yellow in colour with black curly writing on one side of the envelope and both sides of the letter. The letter begins with "Dearest Lily,I know you will forgive..." and concludes with "ever yours, Alex".There is a round ink stamp on the top middle of the envelope with the text "Cristobal, Jul 28 1130 AM 1926 Canal Zone". This insulator was used on phone wires. Insulators were originally designed to keep the wires linking telegraphs and telephones insulated from the wooden poles that held them aloft. Prior to 1925, Australia relied solely on insulators imported from other countries. Glass insulators were first manufactured in Australia in c. 1926 by Australian Glass Manufacturers. Their factory was, and still is, located on South Dowling Road in Sydney. Australian Glass Manufacturers (A.G.M.) had developed a toughened type of glass very similar to Pyrex glass. Since the Pyrex name could not be used due to trademark infringements, they called their glass AGEE for Australian Glass. Many fruit jars, insulators, pie dishes and other glass items were manufactured with this AGEE trademark during the 1926 to 1940 period.Glass insulators are rapidly becoming a thing of the past in Australia with open-wire communication lines rarely existing near metropolitan areas. The remaining open wire lines are being abandoned and dismantled everywhere with very few insulators being saved as interest in them in Australia is quite limited. (ref Australian Insulators web-site). This item is an example of a piece of equipment which has been superceded.A glass telegraph line insulator of double umbrella shape. Canoeing on the River Yarra at Melbourne was an important and widespread recreational pursuit for Melbournians, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. The Victorian Canoe Club was formed in 1912 at a meeting in Melbourne and its first committee elected in the same year. Records indicate that the Club continued into at least the 1950s .The photos in this album are historically and socially significant as a record of recreational activities in the first half of the twentieth century. The Miner’s Right has a long history in Australia. Still in use today, it was first established in Victoria in 1855, as a replacement for the Gold License (which had been introduced in Victoria in 1851). The Miner’s Right was subsequently adopted by other Australian colonies. Unlike the Gold License, the early Miner’s Right, in addition to the right to prospect for gold, also carried with it certain other advantages, such as property rights and voting rights. Construction of the new concrete bridge over the Diamond Creek on Main Road, Eltham, c.May 1926. Viewed from northern approach looking east, the access drive running off Antoinette Boulevard parallel to Main Road is visible as well as the power lines that used to run in front of Eltham Park (Eltham Lower Park). Also visible is a tree situated beside the roadway. It is believed this is the same tree that remains today as a dead tree trunk immediately adjacent to the road verge armco near the corner of Antoinette Boulevard. The original long suspension bridge over the Diamond Creek on Main Road at Eltham collapsed during flooding of the Diamond Creek on October 13 and 14, 1923. The original bridge was built around 1840 for the coach road when Cobb & Co.'s coach was the only conveyance between Eltham and Melbourne. Widespread damage was done in Melbourne and surrounding areas by floods resulting from the overflow of the Yarra at many points along its banks. A temporary bridge rigged up was severely damaged by the flooding of the creek and was closed to vehicular traffic in April 1924. A new concrete bridge was constructed to replace it and by May 1926 all the concrete piles and abutments had been completed. The bridge was finally completed and opened for traffic in September 1926, almost three years after it initially collapsed.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971).
