This was knitted by Marjorie Burton during WW11 in England. She used to knit while in an air raid shelter escaping the bombing with her young daughter. Air raid shelters were built specifically to serve as protection against enemy air raids. However, pre-existing structures such as underground stations (tube or subway stations), tunnels, cellars in houses or basements in larger establishments, and railway arches, above ground, were suitable for safeguarding people during air raids. This item is an example of a handcrafted item and reflects the handcraft skills of women necessary during WW11 when clothing became scarce. This spoon is a souvenir of Brauer College, Warrnambool. This school had its origins in the establishment in 1913 in Timor Street, Warrnambool of the Warrnambool Technical School which later incorporated the Warrnambool Technical College. In the 1970s the Technical School section was relocated to Caramut Street, Warrnambool and in 1990 was re-named Brauer College (after a local doctor of note, Doctor Alfred Brauer, a prominent supporter of technical education in Warrnambool. The Timor Street location is now the site of South West T.A.F.E. (Technical and Further Education).This spoon is of interest as a memento of Brauer College, an important secondary school institution in Warrnambool. Installed by the Queenstown Cemetery Trust December 2009 The discovery of gold in Smyth's Creek in 1854 and subsequent gold rush to the Caledonia diggings led to the establishment of Queenstown (present day St Andrews). The first recorded burial was July 31st, 1861 and it was officially declared a Cemetery Reserve in 1866. Many graves are unmarked and unrecorded including many Chinese and other itinerant miners. The cemetery was closed for new burials in 1851. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. This book shows a collection of pictures from the days of the earliest settlement of Box Hill through to the 1930s. They show us the clearing of land for the establishment of farms and orchards. We see the early Whitehorse Road which was known as Corduroy Road because of the logs that formed its surface.This publication, originally suggested by Betty Walters, a former Mayor of the City, portrays the evolution of the central area of the City, from the first settlers to 1930.
