Provides a report from The Age, 28-11-1989 written by Ingrid Swendsen, about the rejection by the Planning and Environment Minister , Tom Roper to protect the former cable tram winding or Engine house on the corner of Bridge and Punt Roads Richmond, despite the recommendation of the Historic Buildings Council to add it to the register. The building was later demolished by the Roads Corporation to widen the intersection. The Tramways have a small sub-station on the site. Quotes Douglas Hill of the National Trust and Roz Hansen of the Historic Buildings Council. Photograph of one of the three Victorian Railways "Luxury" cars that were sold to the MMTB following the closure of the final section of the St Kilda - Brighton tramway on 28-2-1959. The tramcar has been placed on No. 15 trucks to enable movement around the workshops. Two of the trams, No. 52 and 53 were modified with longer running boards, full driver's bulkheads to replace the blackout blinds, route number boxes, removal of the red oil lamps above the headlight, conversion to from Broad gauge (5'3") to standard gauge, changes to destination boxes, seating and many other changes. Track welding being carried out. Tram showing Special. In the background are signs for Castrol, Speedie Electrical Appliances. .2 - W5 812 and W2 521 on the temporary track following the first diversion for the construction of the new bridge works looking north. The North bound track tried out at approx. 12.40pm: .2 - "MMTB 521 (route 64 - City) and 812 (route 64 - East Brighton and Malvern Burke Road) on temporary track at St Kilda Jtn bypass. Note sharpness of curves and very limited transitions and tangents. Shows the old junction trackwork and road height differences.
