Written by hand in blue ink on a small piece of paper - Ribbon is pure gold thread. The buttons and stars are rolled gold. They were all brought from Germany by Auntie Hilda - made in her cousin's factory who supplied these for the German Army, (1st World War).A set of 1st World War German Military Uniform badges (10 star pins) and buttons (5) with a shank on the back made of rolled gold and a piece of ribbon made of pure gold thread. 3 buttons are smaller than the other two and all have engraving and military insignia which is difficult to read on the front and the back of each. One star is bigger than the other 9 and all have 5 points and lines on each point. They have a pin on the back. The 5 buttons have an insignia on the front with a key and other markings. The intersection of Warrigal Road and Nepean Highway is now a major intersection, serviced by traffic lights. In the 1950s it was a joining of two sealed roads, although covered in gravel, and with wide gravel shoulders. There are no traffic signs and the few houses visible are not set very far back from the road. This image is one of many in the collections that focuses on either roads or the railway. Cheltenham station was built in 1898 and serviced a primarily rural, market gardening community.The late 1870s saw the beginning of a massive program to construct railway lines throughout Victoria. One of these lines was from Caulfield to Frankston. A survey undertaken by J P Madden, an engineer employed by the railways, established the route, although this was later modified. At the time of the official opening of the line to Mordialloc no station buildings had been constructed despite the fact that tenders had been called in the Government Gazette of 26 May 1881 and subsequently in the Argus newspaper on 30 August 1881 for what became stations at Glenhuntly, Ormond, Bentleigh, Moorabbin, Highett, Cheltenham, Mentone and Mordialloc. However platforms and sidings were completed, ready to receive passengers. Percival White was a blacksmith who set up shop in South Road, Moorabbin. The advertising on the front of the shop indicates he also made and repaired buggies, wagons, etc.Percival White opened his blacksmith shop in 1853. Two documents that show that in 2003 Melbourne Legacy decided to sell two of its properties, 22 Selwood St, Hawthorn East and 9 The Avenue, Windsor. This decision was taken due to rising maintenance costs and that the money raised from the sale of the properties could be used to benefit all 24,000 widows under their care. One document was a statement by President Tony Parkes about the decision and the other a letter from Jellis Craig offering to be involved in the sale. They had read about the decision in the Leader newspaper. No time frame had been set and all residents of these two properties would be consulted by Legacy personnel with a family member present. Frederick Birkin No VX32484 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 25.6.40 age 24 years. Attached to 2/22nd Batt known as “Lark Force” they were stationed in Rabaul awaiting a possible attack by the Japanese. The attack came in early 1942. Birkin was taken POW and his death was on 1.7.42. Numbers escaped, others were massacred at the TOL Plantation and many more of the total Force and civilians lost their lives on the Japanese prison ship “Montivedeo Maru” which was sunk by an American Submarine on 1.7.42. A small number survived this. The cards were all written on the back with name and number of men in Birkins unit prior to embarkation to Rabaul. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society. The society was instrumental in promoting the art of the bookplate through establishment of the Australian Bookplate Design competition.
