This image is one from a series of portraits taken by Rob Elliott to record the character of the Border District through the faces if its identities. Born on 10 July 1931 in Walwa, Joseph Gordon (Joe) Drage operated a timber mill and earthmoving business, but his great passion was aviation. After obtaining his pilot’s licence at the age of 19, Mr. Drage set about buying vintage aircraft that he feared would be sold overseas. He bought his first aircraft, a Tiger Moth in 1965. In 1972 he established Drage Historical Aircraft Museum on about 60 ha of land in Wodonga, with 5 planes. Over time this grew to 21 planes which Joe maintained so that they were all in flying order. His museum was the location for several air shows which included fly-ins by members of the Antique Aeroplane Association. The land occupied by the Museum was compulsorily acquired by the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation and Wangaratta council bought the aircraft collection for about $2 million. They opened Drage Airworld in 1984. The cost of maintaining the collection became too much for the council which closed it down in 2002. Uniform worn in Iraq by Greg Westhead. Greg enlisted in the Australian Army in 1974 and served in B Sqd 1st Australian Armoured Corp Regiment, He was discharged in 1977. He re enlisted in 1982 and joined the Military Police. In 1984 he was promoted to Cpl Instructor, then Sgt 1989, promoted to Platoon Sgt in 1991 and WO2 in 1995. In 1999 served on exchange with the British Military Police on a 6 month exchange. While on exchange served in Bosnia. In 2000 he received Commander 2nd Division Commendation for services to Training in defensive Tactics and Close Personel Protection. Promoted to RSM 2002.In 2004 he received a Conspicious Service Medal in the Australia Day Honours list. He was posted to Iraq with the 1st Al Muthanna Task Group in 2005 for 6 months. During 2008/9 he was posted to the USMC in California. 2009/10 he served in Afghanistan for 6 months as WO1 detainee Supervisor. 2012 deployed to the Multi National Force & Observers, Siani Eygpt as the Australian contingent RSM for 7 months. He transferred to the Army Reserve in 2013 as ADF WO1 Senior Instructor Small Arms Training. Milton Arthur Williamson was born in Clunes, Victoria and enlisted at 22 years and 5 months on 29/3/1915. He embarked for Alexandria on 30/8/1915. He was injured during duty and had continual problems with his knee. He was returned to Australia on 10/9/1917 following several appearances before the Medical Board of the Australian Military Offices of London and Kent in the United Kingdom. The termination of his appointment was effected on 4/3/1918 and he was medically discharged from the AIF. This is a copy of an album of photographs held at the National Library of Australia. The album was photographed by Reverend's Weller grand daughter. Freda Oxley was a friend of the Wellers. She was born in Windsor in 1882 and Alexina Weller (nee Caley) was born in 1885 also in Windsor. She travelled on the SS Persic from England and arrived in 1925. She stayed at the Mission for several years, and became a host of the many picnics, making friends with the ladies from the Guild, taking photographs of people and events. In 1977 a group of Mount Beauty cross country skiers formed the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. In 1979, a version of the famous Birkebeiner race, the first Australian Birkebeiner was held at Falls Creek. In June 1990 representatives from Australia put their case for a southern hemisphere race in the series. Following a trial event in 1990. Australia became the 12th member of Worldloppet in the winter of 1991, with the first Kangaroo Hoppet. In 1991 a parade and commemorative torch lighting ceremony were organised in Mt Beauty as part of the celebrations to mark the first official Kangaroo Hoppett with participation from local community groups and commercial organisations, the Chamber of Commerce, local government representatives and individuals.Kangaroo Hoppet caters to diverse interests by offering a 42km and 21km event. It also offers a 7km event that attracts skiers, ranging from elite juniors to parents, grandparents, babies and first time skiers. It is recognised on the world cross country ski race calendar. It brings large numbers of participants and spectators to the area which support tourism, local businesses and employment. Mayor Harkness is at the top. The picture are on a blue material and around a wodden shield, this shield possibly silver has the emblem of the City of Bendigo and the inscription: presented to Councillor Abraham Harkness by the Mayor, Councillors and citizens to mark their appreciation of the satisfactory manner in which he filled the high and honourable position of mayor of the City of Bendigo for the years 1897/8 and 1898/9.
