Document is titled ‘The Development of Melbourne’s trams’ issued by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board as part of M.M.T.B. News dated 1965. The document details the development of trams in Melbourne from 1860 followed by the 1869 formation of The Melbourne Omnibus Company and then the creation of The Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in 1919. Document covers the operations of horsedrawn trams, cable trams and electric trams and buses until 1965. Passengers could often transfer from one service to another - eg changing from a tram to a bus, without having to pay a second fare. A transfer ticket would be issued on request and this along with the original fare ticket would be shown to the conductor or bus driver at the time of transfer. Check tickets would be issued by a conductor to record that the person had shown a periodical eg scholars ticket. This enabled passenger counting as well. Bell used by the conductor or passengers to signal to the driver - stop, proceed or an emergency stop. The actual bell and part of the striker are missing. The striker has been broken off. The "JS" indicates it was made by John Stephenson of New York who made tramway equipment and the first cable tram saloon cars for Melbourne. Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars.Part of a brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, part of the bell striker and bell pull part. "M. T & O Coy" have been printed on the destination panel. At base of card is "Darge Photo copyright No. 1136". On rear is printed Postcard, /Correspondence/Address Only. On side of card vertically is "DARGE, Photographer, 175 Collins St. Melbourne Vic."
