Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from LOCH ARD is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the LOCH ARD. Kew, in Melbourne, Victoria, was declared a Borough in 1859, following which the first Council was elected in 1860. Kew became a Town in 1910, and a City in 1921. It was amalgamated into a new City of Boroondara in 1994. Walter Withers (1854-1914) was born in Handsworth, Warwickshire, England. He migrated to Australia in 1882 and in time was to become one of the country's most famous painters. In 1887/8 he spent a year in London and Paris during which time he married Fanny Flinn. When he returned to Melbourne he was engaged by publishers doing black and white illustrations. In the late 1880's he became associated with artists who formed the renowned "Heidelberg School" and in 1890 moved to "Charterisville" at Eaglemont. He lived in the Heidelberg area until 1903 when he purchased a house on two and a half acres (one hectare) at the corner of Brougham and Bolton Streets, Eltham. He had long been attracted to the Eltham area, but needed access to Melbourne for his painting classes. The extension of the railway in 1901 made the move possible. He remained in Eltham until his death and is buried at nearby St Helena. Many of his important paintings were painted during these later years. There are important collections at the National Gallery of Victoria and the Geelong Art Gallery. His Eltham house remains and his name is honoured by a small park at the corner of Bible and Arthur Streets. In 1959 Princess Alexandra of Kent visited Australia as the representative of Queen Elizabeth II for the Queensland Centenary Celebrations. Her six week visit began with her arrival in Canberra on 14th August 14 and she departed from Canberra on 26th September. Time spent in Australia included 3 weeks in Queensland. Her Royal Highness' visits to New South Wales and Victoria were comparatively brief and informal. In New South Wales she made two country visits including to Albury and a night spent at Bungowannah Park near Jindera. Her visit to Victoria began in Wodonga where she officially opened the Pollard Archway over the Causeway. She received an enthusiastic welcome as she approached the Archway accompanied by a motorcycle escort. As Princess Alexander stepped forward to take the scissors from a red plush case, her Lady-in- Waiting, Lady Moyra Hamilton, tugged at the Princess' sleeve, whispered and gave her a coin. The Princess handed the coin a halfpenny to the Wodonga Shire President, Cr J. S. Hore, saying: "I must give you this, otherwise it might be unlucky." (The halfpenny "gift" stems from an old English superstition that a "sharp" gift such as a knife or scissors must be dulled with copper or else a friendship will be lost. After cutting the ribbon and declaring the Pollard Arch, named in honour of Councillor Charles Pollard M.B.E. she was presented with a bouquet by 10-year old Leslie McLeod. Princess Alexandra led by a pipe band was driven along the Hume Highway and High Street which were lined by thousands of people including school children. After a short trip along High Street and Elgin Street to the Railway Station she departed from protocol to speak to the many children who had crossed the barricade. Princess Alexandra then boarded the Royal Train for her journey to Melbourne.This item is significant because it represents the visit to Wodonga of Princess Alexandra in 1959.A pair of scissors in a red box. It was generally served by two teachers or a Head Teacher assisted by a Sewing Mistress. Edwin Mann taught there for 35 years, with his wife, Mrs Mann, as the Sewing Mistress for some years. The inside pages of this pamphlet list the many donors and subscribers who initially supported the Victorian Mission to Seamen whose first chapel was based on a floating Hulk named the Emily. The most generous 1857 donors at 20 guineas Dove and Oswald, ship owners, (also the name of the Heritage floating dock at Williamstown). The point of this pamphlet published in 1957 appears to be a reminder of longstanding support and as part of an appeal to new donors to assist with increased costs. It also compairs the donations betwwen 1857, 50 years later in 1907, and in 1957 the year of Centenary. Edward Heffernan and Geoffrey Mainwaring were Australian artists and art educators who in their very different approaches and passions influenced hundreds of artists and art students throughout their careers. Born only days apart in October 1912 they pursued a lifelong passion for art. Heffernan from Melbourne and Mainwaring from Adelaide gave decades in art education in regional Victoria at Geelong and Ballarat respectively. Heffernan was also influential in working with Melbourne students and encouraging art through the Victorian Artists Society while Mainwaring served to use his art in documenting the role of Australia in the Second World War as an official Australian War Artist. This exhibition catalogue profiles their careers and was the first such retrospective of their lives and work brought together to celebrate their contribution to Australian art and the double centenary of their births.
