With the completion of the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme in 1959, Falls Creek began to change from being a construction site into an alpine tourism resort. In 1964 the Frying Pan Inn group consisting of Bill Bridgford, Geof Henke and L G Morrison acquired a license to construct a restaurant. It opened in time for the 1965 season, but the Frying Pan venue was damaged by fire in 1967. Renovations took until 1973 when the Frying Pan Inn reopened. John Inglis Lothian and family at 'Tantallon', c1925. John Inglis Lothian was born in Dunbar Scotland in 1851. He married Lillias Charlotte Smith (b 1847) in 1876. They had 6 children, all but the last born in Scotland before they migrated to Australia in 1888. Children were: 1. Margaret Morrison (1879 - ) 2. Thomas Carlyle (1880 - 1974) 3. Elizabeth Inglis (1882 - 1973) 4. Lillias Smith (1883 - 1971) 5. Isabella Margaret (1885 - 1946) 6. John George (1892 - 1983). Lillias Smith Lothian (Father's name: Morrison Smith; Mother's name Margaret Inglis) died in Ringwood and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (C-*-0138). Most of the other members of the family were cremated and their ashes scattered. The family were in York Street, Surrey Hills in 1903 but moved to Ringwood where they were orchardists, returning to 59 York Street by 1927, by which time John Inglis Lothian had retired. Thomas Carlyle Lothian lived at 33 York Street (St Abbs) and established Lothian Publishing Co Pty Ltd. He died on 19 Apr 1974 in Mont Albert. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. Women's magazines developed rapidly through the 1800's reflecting marketing and social changes. Publications evolved from being journals aimed at the middle class to cheaper, chattier more domestic magazines more widely available. Alice Letitia Swan was the daughter of Edward Swan (tinsmith and plumber at Orbost) and Emma Dinah Jefferson. Alice married Herman Oswald (Ossie) Wehner (blacksmith, Orbost) on 4-4-1923. She was born in 1899 in Omeo and died 14-6-1979, aged 80 in Orbost.(info. from John Phillips)These are early 20th century examples of English women's magazines. They give practical advice on needlework and they evidence the widespread interest in contemporary fashion. In doing so they show what were the fashionable, but broadly affordable, women's and children's clothing styles of their day. These magazines also reflect women's interests in fiction at that time.Two magazines, titled The Lady's Companion. 2424.1 was printed on 21.1.1911 and cost one penny. 2424.2 is dated 25.11.1916 and is titled Leach's Lady's Companion and has a pink cover. Delivery cart of Mr & Mrs W J Atkinson’s greengrocery business and general store near the corner of Whitehorse and Elgar Roads, c 1930. Emma Uebergang and William James Atkinson married in 1930. They ran a mixed business in Whitehorse Road from 1926-1952. Stock included fruit and vegetables, sweets and some groceries. With Mr Atkinson is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries. To the left can be seen Whitehorse Road as it approaches the shopping centre and over the back of the horse can be seen the White Horse Hotel. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo.
