The inaugural meeting to form Harcourt Bowling Club was held in May 1955. Cr Ben Bingham donated half an acre of land in Bagshaw st Harcourt and the club acquired a small building from Blight's Quarry to serve as a clubhouse. The first day's play took place on 24th October 1959. New clubrooms were built in 1961 with the official opening of the Club held on Saturday 11th November 1961. The club became affilaited with Bendigo District Bowling Assocaition and, in 1966/67 won the Associated division 3 pennant. ; Depicts a group of men, the core ‘movers and shakers’ of the Harcourt community, in the course of their favourite recreation, Association champions in just the seventh year after formation.. ... of competition. Wodonga Football Club Sport and recreation Football ...Wodonga Football Club’s first recorded match was against the Albury Football Club on Saturday, 6 July 1878 in Wodonga. Between 1878 and 1891, Wodonga played many intermittent friendly matches against other local clubs and towns, before organised fixtures and competitions were starting to be arranged from the early 1890s In 1899, the Wodonga Football Club "Starlights" Junior Club was formed and adopted the Club colours of blue, black and a white star. In 1903, 1904 and 1905, the Wodonga Football Club "Shamrocks" entered a team in the local Federal Junior Football Association. In April 1906, the Wodonga Football Club "Shamrocks" met and decided to become a Senior team and be known as just the Wodonga FC The Club, currently a member of the Ovens and Murray Football League, has participated in a variety of local leagues and competition since then, apart from the years of the First and Second World Wars when they went into recess. The support the club has shown to its members was evidenced around 1949, when the Wodonga FC set up a Provident Fund for injured players to be compensated if they were not able to work for a length of time. In 1981, Wodonga achieved the rare feat of winning football Premierships in the Firsts, Seconds and Thirds. No other team has done this. The club has played in the finals 33 of the 74 years, winning seven senior premiership flags. Austico Apparel began as the Australian Tie Company in 1915; a specialty manufacturer of men's ties and accessories.Wodonga Football Club was first established in 1878 and has played an important role in the community since that time. It has been successful not only on the sporting field, but has provided support and social connection to its members and their families. The Lavington Sports Ground, former home of the Lavington Sports Club, is now owned and operated by Albury City Council. Over 50 years ago, a group of Lavington locals dreamed of building a new sportsground to encourage more people to play sport, particularly juniors. The original oval opened in 1973. The Sports Ground was developed solely by the Lavington Sports Club, formed by 30 football and cricket players and supporters in 1964. Football and cricket clubs had existed in Lavington since before 1914. In 1964, the football and cricket clubs merged to become the Lavington Sports Club. The new club and facilities were established on land initially leased from the Divine Sword Missionaries on their former seminary and turkey farm. The club expanded its facilities and representative sports throughout the next 20 years, including hosting international events. However the Club's debt worsened and In 2001 the entire Lavington Sports Club operation went into liquidation. It was taken over by Penrith Panthers through the Panthers Entertainment Group. The New South Wales Railway Institute affectionately known as “the Institute”, was initially established to provide a higher standard of educational learning for NSW railway employees. As well as employment related training, the Institute was tasked with stimulating growth and intellectual development of employees in the arts, social, leisure, and physical recreations. The NSW Railway Institute was formally opened on the 14th of March 1891 and at the time was the only institution of its kind in the Commonwealth. The Albury branch of the Railways Institute was formed on March 1, 1921. This included the building of a Railway Institute building as part of the Railway precinct in 1921. On Tuesday 7 October 1952, the Daily Advertiser, Wagga reported that a move had started at Albury for the establishment of a third bowling club. The new club formed would be the Railway Institute Bowling Club and the suggested site was on Albury City Council land at the corner of Young and Smollett streets. The Albury Railway Institute opened its bowling greens in February 1956. It later became known as Windsor Park Bowling Club. In 2003, the Bowling Club was liquidated and was amalgamated with the Albury Soldiers Sailors & Airmen’s Club. After changes to their operating model, the club building was demolished in 2013. The Paravics Sports Club, now known as Disability Sport and Recreation Victoria, was formed in 1962 to help a group of eight athletes with disability compete in national and international sporting competitions. Apart from its goal for advocating for greater sporting and recreation opportunities for disabled athletes, Paravics / Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of Victoria also sought to bring awareness and advocacy to the general needs of wheelchair bound persons. The newsletter, the first for 1972, includes numerous news items, including: - Cyril Thomas being congratulated by Paravics on his receiving an M.B.E. - A call for ideas for social events, as well as news of social events. - A walkathon - wheelathon fundraiser. - News on the upcoming Paralympics to be held in Heidelberg, Germany With the introduction of the metric system in Australia, Paravics attempted to use the adoption of the metric system for a fundraising campaign called "mark a metre", which included a poster attached to the newsletter.Three photocopied sheets (6 pages, double-sided), two of the sheets are off-white, and the last sheet is pale orange. Apart from its goal for advocating for greater sporting and recreation opportunities for disabled athletes, Paravics / Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of Victoria also sought to bring awareness and advocacy to the general needs of wheelchair bound persons. The newsletter, the first for 1972, includes numerous news items, including: - Notes from Dr Burke of the Austin Hospital's Spinal Unit, on a year-long of tour of overseas spinal centres, principally in South Africa, France, United Kingdom, and the United States. Burke notes that based on his observations during tour, the standard and quality of treatment at the Austin for spinal injuries is "As good as anywhere in the world and in some respects the best, particularly that of early treatment after injury". Burke also notes the difference in attitudes between different countries in terms of research focus, equipment and technology, the use of sport as a rehabilitation tool for people with permanent spinal injuries, and staffing levels and education. - Job vacancies - News from the Quadriplegic Activities Group. - Information about various auxiliary groups and fundraising efforts. - News about members of the organisation. - A letter from Mrs D. Sunbury United Soccer Club was established in 1973 by a group of expatriate Europeans who wanted to play the game they grew up with. Their first games were played on the recreation reserve in Evans Street on the ground designed for AFL football. (Now the site of a shopping complex). In August 1975, Sunbury United moved to its present home on seven and a half acres of sporting ground at Langama Park in Mitchells Lane . Over the years that area has developed and there are now three senior, and two junior soccer pitches with two cricket pitches and practice nets. Although there is still room for improvement to the floodlighting on the main pitch, the night games have proven successful. The photograph was included in a completion organised by the former Sunbury & District Heritage Association in March 2001. It is photograph of the lake at The Nook that served as Sunbury's swimming pool from the time outdoor swimming became acceptable until 1965 when a new Olympic sized outdoor swimming pool and aquatic centre was opened in Ligar Street. The modern pool was built as a result of the Sunbury Community raising funds for the project. Since 1965, the local council has added an indoor pool and a heated pool to the site as well as a gymnasium. Prior to the building of the new pool in 1965, The Nook site was where swimming carnivals and other aquatic events took place. The Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club was first formed in September 1859, but didn't become a properly constituted club until April 1873, when a meeting was held at the Commercial Hotel, now the Whaler's Inn, and a committee was elected.Part of the present racecourse of 100 acres was set aside as a racing and recreation reserve in August 1855. It is one of the finest racecourses in Australia, ringed by the gentle slopes of a huge basin.The first race meeting was held on the course in August 1858. The Warrnambool Racing Club has managed racing at Warrnambool since it was formed on 5 April 1873.Apart from a number of smaller meetings held throughout the year, the feature of racing in the district is the Grand Annual Steeplechase. The first steeplechase over the now famous cross-country course was run on 13th June 1872 then known as the Grand Annual Steeplechase. The paddocks now know as Brierly and Granters were first used on that date. The course, over four miles, was made up of different kinds of jumps including a stone wall, a log fence, a ditch and parapet, a paling fence and numerous post and rails.This card has Warrnambool Racing Club acceptances on one side for the Winter steeplechase meeting for the June meeting in 1882. Stansmore Bros. operated livery stables near the Commercial Hotel in Liebig Street around this time having commenced their business in Camperdown.They later moved to Kepler Street. The Stansmore family had a long association with the racing and agricultural industry in the Camperdown and Heytesbury areas. This little card has links to one of Warrnambool's premier sporting events and a local business which has strong family connections in the district.Small green card with black text on front and back.
