Marjorie Morgan discovered some of his carvings and found nothing about the carver. She set herself the project and contacted many family members who had received a carving as a gift. She organised a family reunion so everyone could bring their carvings to one place (Surrey Gardens) and have them photographed for the book. Nathan Frederick Spielvogel (1874-1956), teacher, writer and historian, was born on 10 May 1874 at Ballarat, Victoria. as well as his stories he published a number of Books about the history of Ballarat. Spielvogel taught at Orbost for at least a year and this book reflects that time. Spielvogel was a teacher, writer and historian. As a country schoolteacher, he traveled widely in the eastern Australian outback and also made a journey to London. The book originated from the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute. The book was printed for Walter Kettilby, a bookseller and publisher in London in the 17th century. He died in 1699 and was buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral.The book is significant for its age – it is one of the oldest books in Flagstaff Hill’s collection, published in 1696, well before Australia was colonised. The publisher, Walter Kettilby, passed away three years later. The book expresses the writer’s interpretation of Christian doctrine giving an insight into the doctrines and beliefs of the 17th century. The book was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. which has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. A book written by Myann Burrows and published by Brisbane Legacy about the Legacy children's residence Moorlands. It was written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the first children to arrive at Moorlands Legacy's War Orphans' Home. It operated for 23 years until 1969. The children labelled themselves Moorlands Kids and had frequent reunions and contact with each other over the years. The house was initially built in 1892 and during World War 2 it served as General Blamey's headquarters. It was purchased in March 1945 though the Army didn't vacate until January 1946. Miss M Netterfield was appointed matron and Mrs Dethridge as sub-matron. In July 1946 17 boys moved in and by end of August there were 28 children. It was officially opened by Governor of Queensland, Sir John Lavarack on 27 February 1947 which Legatee Savige spoke at, there is a photo in the collection. Parent/Guardian named in Registry as Ed Bailey residing in [Mt. Rowan?]. It is also noted in the Register that Amy came from Miss. [Keeps?] Ladies' School.During 1877 - 1891 Ballarat College accepted enrolments from female students. The school holds the original register of this period and notes that Amy Bailey entered the College at the age of 12. Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. This book is a true account of the experiences of seven Australian boys beginning their career as seamen on the last voyage of the ‘John Murray’ when they became stranded on a South Pacific Island. The author John F. Moodie Heddle was an apprentice on board at that time. The publisher firm of Longmans, Green & Co. was founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, including the name Longman, Green, Longman and Roberts from 1859 to 1862, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The three-masted iron baque 'John Murray' was built and registered in Glasgow, UK, in 1877 as a general cargo vessel maned the 'Loch Ryan'. It traded between the UK and Australia from 1877 to 1909. In 1909 the Loch Ryan was purchased by the Defence Department of Victoria, refitted at Williamstown as a training vessel and renamed ‘John Murray’. It was commissioned from 1910 to 1917 for reforming juvenile offenders as seamen for the Navy and Merchant Navy. The training project ceased after reports of the treatment of the boys. Although 411 did their training under this scheme, the success rate of them qualifying to serve on other vessels was less than twenty per cent. The ship was named after John (Jack) Murray (1851-1916), who was born near Koroit. He was the 23rd Premier of Victoria (1909-1912), and a Warrnambool Member of Parliament for twenty years. In 1917 the John Murray was sold to the Government of Australia to serve during the Great War, World War I. The ship was loaded with a cargo of dynamite and petroleum at San Francisco then departed for Melbourne when, during its passage, it was wrecked at Malden Island reef in the mid-Pacific Ocean on May 29th, 1918.The book gives us a first-hand account of the wrecking of the sailing ship John Murray, named after a past Warrnambool Member of Parliament for twenty years and the 23rd Premier of Victoria, born locally, near Koroit. The book is significant for its association with the vessel John Murray, which was formerly the 'Loch Ryan' of the Loch Line General Shipping Company of Glasgow. This card is an invitation to attend a Night in the Gardens in March 2016 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. The first site of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens was near the mouth of the Hopkins River but this site proved unsuitable and a new location ( the present location) was found in 1866 bounded by Cockman Street and Botanic Road. In 1877 William Guilfoyle was commissioned to provide a new plan for the Gardens.
