Dame Gracie Fields, DBE (born Grace Stansfield; 9 January 1898 – 27 September 1979) was an English actress, singer and comedienne and star of both cinema and music hall. When World War II was declared and whilst recovering from surgery she threw herself into her work and signed up for the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). Fields travelled to France to entertain the troops in the midst of air-raids, performing on the backs of open lorries and in war-torn areas. She performed many times for Allied troops, travelling as far as New Guinea, where she received an enthusiastic response from Australian personnel. In late 1945 she toured the South Pacific Islands. He moved to Victoria prior to being demobilized in 1945 as an Engineer with the Australian Army Field Workshop. The charge of the 21st Lancers in September 1898 was one of the last full-scale cavalry charges of the British Army. The battle took place 6.4 km. (four miles) outside Omdurman, just north of Khartoum and marked the culmination of Major-General Sir Horatio Herbert (later Field Marshal, 1st Earl) Kitchener's campaign for the re-conquest of the Sudan, the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1898).At the Battle of Omdurman (2 September 1898), an army commanded by the British General Sir Herbert Kitchener defeated the army of Abdullah al-Taashi, the successor to the self-proclaimed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. Kitchener was seeking revenge for the 1885 death of General Gordon. It was a demonstration of the superiority of a highly disciplined army equipped with modern rifles, machine guns, and artillery over a force twice their size armed with older weapons, and marked the success of British efforts to re-conquer the Sudan. First world war experiences written and published in booklet form entitled "My Brother" by Leo Blanchard HANLY - Private 1702 served the 3 Light Horse Field Ambulance. Embarked on 15.7.1915 and returned on 2.1.1919. Leo wrote the book about his brother Theodore Hanly. Theodore and another brother, Joseph Dillon also served in the 3 LH Field Ambulance alongside Leo. Colour photograph of Lt General Brian Ashley "Ash" Power AO, CSC . Ash Power was born on the 20th of January 1957 in Wangaratta, Victoria. After completing his secondary education at Wangaratta High School, he entered the Royal Military College in 1975, graduating in 1978 into the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery. His initial appointment was as a Section Commander in 4th Field Regiment. He further served in 4th Field Regiment as a Gun Position Officer, Assistant Adjutant, Adjutant, Operations Officer (BatteryCommander Headquarters Battery) and Commanding Officer.Ash has commanded the 1st Brigade, 1st Division and Training Command – Army. He has served on exchange at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Camberley, United Kingdom and has had other training appointments at the School of Artillery, and the Royal Military College Duntroon. He also served as the Defence Attaché in Thailand. On operations Ash deployed to Bougainville on Operation BELISI as Chief of Staff in 1998 and in 1999, after a short period as Chief of Staff Deployable Joint Force Headquarters, was deployed as the Colonel Operations for INTERFET in East Timor. From June 2004 to July 2005 he was appointed as Director, Combined Planning Group, US Central Command, Tampa. He deployed as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Strategic Partnering Headquarters International Security Assistance Force, Kabul, Afghanistan in 2010-11. Sister Martha (Florence Gertrude Edwards) was Kindergarten Superintendent at the Carlton Methodist Mission. She married the Reverend George Fielding Dyson in 1936 after the death of his first wife in 1934. Rev. Dyson's son Fielding George Martin Dyson was killed in a motorcycle accident on 9 April 1936. Two memorial windows for the first Mrs Dyson were installed in the Palmerston Street Methodist Church. This is a token of appreciation to Rev William Charles J. Peart who was leaving the Wodonga-Bethanga Methodist Circuit to serve King and country. He was minister of the Wodonga-Bethanga circuit in 1914 from where he enlisted in the Light Horse. He afterwards became a gunner in the Field Artillery and was severely gassed, from which he never really recovered. He spent time in hospital and on his return to Australia his circuits were Drouin, Footscray and Merbein. He then had to request leave of absence for six months owing to war disabilities. He was able to return to the ministry. Before enlisting he married Doris Quick who came out of the Daylesford Circuit. The war left a legacy of suffering and limitation with Mr Peart, but he showed a brave face and a steady heart. Paper testimonial mounted on card. In 1938, Robin Boyd's grandfather Arthur Merric Boyd offered Robin his first commission, a studio for Robin's first cousin Arthur Boyd on the family property at Murrumbeena. This painting by Arthur Boyd was part of Ralph Madder’s estate and inherited by his daughter, Patricia, Robin Boyd's wife. Ralph Madder (1892 - 1986) was Arthur Boyd’s uncle and employed the young Arthur in his calcimine paint factory and bought the occasional painting to help the young artist. This painting dates from a later time when Arthur was living with, and looking after, his aged grandfather Arthur Merric at Rosebud (see the book “The Boyds” by Brenda Niall pages 188-9). “Wheat fields behind Rosebud” did not come to 290 Walsh Street until after Ralph Madder’s death in 1986. Note: Robin Boyd's uncle Merric Boyd (1888-1959) married Patricia’s aunt Doris Gough. This means that Arthur Boyd was a first cousin to both Robin Boyd and Patricia Madder. These are Robin Boyd's World War II medals. Robin Boyd commenced full-time war service on 19 November 1941 and was discharged in September 1945. He spent much of his war service preparing maps in the 3rd Field Survey Company in New Guinea and late in the war near Mareeba, Queensland.
