These type of marking crayons have been in use from the 1800s onward to mark commercial and non commercial goods and articles that require waterproof and visual identification labels. Items such as bales of wool, tobacco tags, transportation tags(shipping, rail and road) and other "hard to mark" items that require information to be displayed by semi permanent waterproof signage. The crayons are also an advantage for young student art work.This particular box of leviathan crayons was in use by students in the Mount Beauty Primary School through the Victorian Education Supply Department. As the texture and adhesive/application qualities (soft medium and hard) allows students to be "creative" on various type of canvases. This type of application in schools is of a non commercial and simplistic art -form nature however more advanced students could present a commercial interest in a viable creative artistic venture. The major commercial and non educational uses are encompassed in a rural grazing and farming regions, of the Kiewa Valley and adjoining lands.The crayon box is made from cardboard and light buff colour. The box contains six "No.1" crayons, two of which have been used. Each crayon is wrapped with manufacturer's details on 180 gsm thick paper. The wrapper runs nearly 4/5 th of the entire length, leaving 1/5th open to display the colour of the crayon. The colours of the crayons are blue, purple, green, yellow, red and black. Typewriters pre dated computers. This typewriter was possibly used in an office or at home. It was used with an inked tape which may have been only black or had both red and black ink along it. Multiple copies of the material being typed were done using carbon paper inserted between sheets of paper. The original paper was easily identified.Used in the Kiewa Valley.Small grey metal typewriter with deep green key board with gold letters on top.The margin rod is marked in inches and it has keys for pounds, dollars and cents, inches and fractions. The loading of A4 paper is done manually. The keys that hit the paper are stainless steel. The keyboard slopes up to the top which is partially hollow with a gap that exposes the stainless steel keys. The cylinder is at the top and at the back with control knobs on each side. This typewriter has 2 sheets of paper with carbon paper between them to demonstrate how copies were made (but there isn't an inked tape in it so the copies aren't authentic)Centre front: "Royal" Letters of the alphabet on the keys. The Tawonga C.W.A. formed on 7th Feb. 1946. It was a very active group with 45 members in that year. Numbers fluctuated throughout the years and totalled 26 members in 1988. The Tawonga C.W.A. often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. The book gives examples of all the activities the members were involved in over the years and their involvement with other C.W.A. groups in North East Victoria and Victoria. There are many photos of members and their activities too. These photos give a good representation of what womens fashions were during the mid part of the 20 century. Historical: Women living in Tawonga were mostly on farms and, in 1946, when the branch commenced would have been feeling more remote with WW11 having had an effect on available workers and the well being of the women and children. This scrap book was complied by Claire Roper one of the founding members of the CWA. It traces the history of the Tawonga branch of the CWA, its members and what they did which improved the living conditions for their community. Large scrap book held together by 3 large staples originally with blank pages. The pages have been written on and newspaper articles have been pasted in. The book was covered with light brown paper, the heading has been handwritten using block letters coloured in green with black outline. Centre front of the book has a photo of ladies dated 1978. Their names are typed in underneath. The book has then been covered by clear plastic.The title: "C.W.A. / Tawonga / Scrap Book / Collected by C. Ernest migrated from Hungary in January 1951 and helped bring commercial development to Australia's fledgling snowfields. He was keen to find Alpine employment, eventually importing ski and sports gear. This book covers his time in Hungary and his visits to the Alpine Ski Resorts - an insight into the early years of skiing in Australia.Ernest visited Falls Creek on the Bogong High Plains in 1951 and describes the area on pages 66 to76 from the point of view of an Hungarian migrant. The Mt Beauty theatre was located in the community hall and gave residents access to the latest movies when television was just beginning to be a popular household entertainment. The Kiewa valley was for a very long time 'out of range' for television reception . Going to the theatre was popular for all age groups.This program shows that most of the films were suitable for the whole family.Mt Beauty entertainment consisted of going to the pictures on a Wednesday or Saturday night. Most films were suitable for the whole family and were up-to-date movies with well known stars. Mount Beauty High School was proclaimed in 1963 with 213 pupils, 12 staff members. The enrolments and staff numbers increased as the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme continued to be constructed . 1. The Annual Report gives details re Accommodation, Grounds & Buildings, Equipment, Curriculum, Activities, Advisory Council, Cafeteria, Staff and Thanks. 2. In 1972, 27 teachers (names & subjects) are listed as well as other staff. The Reports are similar to that in 1970Mt Beauty High School grew quickly and then declined in numbers as the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme was constructed from the late 1940s to the 1960s.
