A mining firm was established by Hugh McColl in 1871. It was taken over by his son and later another son becoming McColl Bros. Prior to 1896 Ronald Alexander Rankin, who had worked as a clerk in the company from boyhood was made a partner and the firm became McColl and Rankin. In 1911, john J Stanistreet was also promoted to partner and the firm was called McColl, Rankin and Stanistreet. The partnership was dissolved in 1917 upon the retirement of McColl although the company continued under the same name. Bacchus Marsh State School No. 28. The number of pupils in 1883 was 172. The school has undergone a number of name changes over the years. It began as the Bacchus Marsh National School in 1850 and at the time this photo was taken it was known as Bacchus Marsh State School. Since the 1970s it has been known as Bacchus Marsh Primary. It is officially recognised as the oldest government school in Victoria.This image is important as an early depiction of the first state school in Victoria, and is one of the two earliest images of this school.
