This Box Hill Town Hall was officially opened in April 1935 by the then governor of Victoria, Lord Huntingfield. An administrative wing was added in 1982. Following the proclamation of the City of Whitehorse in 1994, the administrative functions were transferred to the Civic Centre in Nunawading. Originally located on the Queenscliff Pier from 1856. It was known as the waiting shed for registered fishermen. It was moved from Queenscliff pier to near slipway in 1960, then to Princess Park in the 1970s and to the museum in late 1980. The Soldier on the badge is apparently VX103098 James Aloysious Canty, enlisted 19/7/1942 in Port Moresby age 29 just prior to Kokoda. He had initially enlisted No V42281. One record has him in E Coy 39th Infantry Batt which was the Machine Gun Coy of the Batt when formed. One record shows him being Taken on the Strength of 7th Machine Gun Batt on 2.11.1942. At discharge on 5.12.1945 he is listed as serving in the 39th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Cpl. The 39th was disbanded in July 1943.Badge, metal, Anzac commemorative. badge is rectangular in shape. Front is gold coloured with "Courage" at the top. Extract from the Bendigo Advertiser 27th November 1856 mentioning a ring which was presented to Mr Lysaght, a barrister for his work for the Chinese residents of Long Gully encampment. The ring was manufactured for the occasion and had an inscription in raised Chinese characters. This photograph is recorded as depicting a street of shops and London houses at Burke Museum in the 1990s. It features an indoor recreated historical streetscape of the 19th century. Within the shop window recreation are objects on display, including hats. The Street of Shops exhibition is still on display at Burke Museum and features objects collected in 1979 through the community by Roy Harvey (also author of Background to Beechworth from 1852), to provide insight into eras of the past. This exhibit displays a collection of over 30,000 items, many dating back over 150 years. The ‘street of shops’ tell the story of the changing town and its community.This photograph is of social significance to the Beechworth area and the Burke Museum as it depicts a still-exhibiting museum display that is of value to the community. The artefacts exhibited in the photograph all have a strong connection to the Beechworth area, having been donated by members of the local community, and are of special value to that community.
