In 1882 the railway from Melbourne to Camberwell was extended to Lilydale, Blackburn Station was then known as Blackburn Greek Station and was opened on 2 December 1882. At this time the Lilydale line had only a single track. On 12 August 1889 Blackburn was designated as a 'crossing station' as it had 2 platforms. In 1891 a second line was added between Box Hill and Ringwood stations. Service termination at Blackburn began in the late 1890's due to the large number of passengers visiting the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. The Lilydale line was electrified to Ringwood in January 1923. Automatic signalling reached Blackburn in 19568. William Cook was one of the earliest settlers in Vermont. Having returned from the W.A. goldfields he married Jane Maggs in 1880 at Wickliffe, Victoria and his only child, Amy, was born in 1881 at Box Hill. William Cook's property fronted Whitehorse Road, Mitcham and ran north almost to the Mullum Mullum Creek. He shared part of his eastern boundary with the Schwerkolt family. Albert Geal, a builder found good quality clay at Tunstall. In 1903 Geal Brothers of Nunawading began making agricultural pipes for orchardists, then moved on to make bricks and tiles. The Geals pottery was on 11 acres at the corner of Springvale Road and Miton Street. John and Eliza McGlone ran one of the earliest hotels in Mitcham - the Harvest Home - in the front room of their house in Whitehorse Road. The hotel closed in 1889 and John McGlone died in 1892. William Henry Slater emigrated from England and began growing medicinal herbs near Koonung Creek, Blackburn North in 1862. He also distilled eucalyptus oil for use at Melbourne Hospital and it was exported overseas under the 'O'Possum' brand. He later replanted his land with orchards but land taxes and rates forced the sale of the property. This Box Hill Town Hall was officially opened in April 1935 by the then governor of Victoria, Lord Huntingfield. An administrative wing was added in 1982. Following the proclamation of the City of Whitehorse in 1994, the administrative functions were transferred to the Civic Centre in Nunawading. The museum houses an extensive collection. It provides educational programmes for schools and other groups. There is a unique collection of 19th century guild banners representing Weavers, the Shoemakers, and the Carpenters. Trade banners also represent the Brick and Stonemasons, Farm Labourers and the Boyne Fishermen. The Old Drogheda Society founded in 1964 by a group of concerned citizens for the preservation of Drogheda's historical monuments and the collection and recording of historical material relating to the town and surrounding area established the award winning museum. The Museum was opened in 1974 and in 2013 achieved full accreditation by the Heritage Council.
