The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1983
These five images, photographed in 1983, depict locations in Ireland that Ned Kelly's father, John "Red" Kelly may have frequented. John Kelly was born on the 20th of February 1820 and worked as a laborer in Ireland. His parents were named Thomas Kelly and Mary Cody. He had a fresh complexion, large head and reddish coloured hair. John Kelly was sentenced in Tipperary, Ireland for the theft of a pig and received 7 years in Van Diemen's Land (now known as Tasmania). He sailed on the ship "Prince Regent" and arrived in VDL on the 2nd of January 1842 with 11 other convicts. John Kelly completed his sentence and moved to Beveridge in Victoria where he met and married Ellen Quin. The couple had 7 children, one of these is Ned Kelly the Bushranger. He died at the young age 46 in 1866. County Tipperary is a county located in Ireland in the province of Munster. It was established in the early thirteenth century, shortly after the Norman invasion of Ireland. These photographs, taken by an unidentified photographer, show the streetscape of Tipperary, the remains of a coachyard and stables, a saddlery yard and a fashion shop. These images are part of the Burke Museum's Kelly album which are of great use to researchers in the reconstruction of the Kelly story. Images like these, which portray an area which John Kelly resided in his youth, have research potential in reconstructing the conditions and quality of life for the Kelly parent. However, these images are not only important for their connection to the Kelly story but also for what they can provide and reveal for Ireland in the 1980s.A collection of five colour rectangular photographs printed on matte photographic paper10269.1 Reverse: TOWNSEND ST. Letter - Correspondence, Letter Concerning Potential Donation of Aboriginal Artefacts to the Ballarat School of Mines Museum, 1954, 11/02/1954
The collection of artefacts formely belonged to the writers father, J.M. Marshall of Sturt Street. He was born and lived in Ballarat most of his life, and was interested in the Ballarat School of Mines Museum during the era of Professor Alfred Mica Smith. The response to this letter foreshadows the closure of the Ballarat School of Mines Museum. Alan Sonsee of the Ballarat Teachers' College was a Field Naturalist and collector of Aboriginal artefacts, and may have been associated with the decision. Handwritten letter from Jessie Marshall of Adelaide offering a collection of Australian "Native Weapons and Curios" to the Ballarat School of Mines Museum. The writer describes the collection as "not a large collection but a very good one - there are also some lovely shells." Ballarat School of Mines Registrar, F.E. Ferguson, declined the offer on behalf of the School Council, suggesting the Ballarat Teachers' College (Dana Street) would like to have the weapons, etc.C/- Collison & Co 32 Waymouth St Adelaide 11/2/54 Sear Sir A am writing this to offer a collection of Native Weapons and Curious - Australian - the Islands and S. City of Ballarat Libraries
Australian Historical Record Society papers, Reminiscences of James Oddie Esq
The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Notes from a lecturette given to the AHRS by James Oddie, and recorded by Mr Coulthard, the Recording Secretary. James Oddie was born in England and arrived in Geelong with his wife and daughter in 1849. The gold lured him to Ballarat, where he witnessed the Eureka uprising. He was the first chairman of the Ballarat Municipal Council, and because of his many philanthropic activities and community involvement, is thought of as "the father of Ballarat."larpent (ship), eureka stockade, goldrush, ballarat, immigrant experience, immigrants -
