These two items have been linked together as a decorative pair but it is not clear why, as the sphere or bulb does not have an opening and cannot hold a light and there is nothing very attractive about the two items as they appear today. This Gunter’s Chain, an old land surveying instrument, is named after its inventor, Edmund Gunter (1581-1626), an English mathematician and astronomer. It was first produced in 1620. The tool has 100 links and is 66 feet or one chain long. The links are marked off in groups of ten by metal rings or tags. A quarter chain (25 links) is called a rod or pole and ten chains make a furlong and 80 chains make a mile. The traditional cricket pitch is 22 yards or one chain long. This Gunter’s Chain is of considerable significance because: 1. It is an early land measuring tool that was used for over 250 years and has great historical and mathematical significance. A Gunter’s Chain would have been used when forming and building local roads from the earliest days of settlement. 2. It has a possible local connection as it was given to the Historical Society by a local person in 1965 and possibly came from the property of ‘Rosehill’ This is a metal tool which consists of 100 metal pieces or links joined together by loops at each end with two metal loops in between each link. The links joined together form a chain. The two ends of the chain have small metal handles attached At intervals along the chain there are additional rings or metal pieces attached. Surrey Panels was started by Maurice Dalzell (Maurie) Costello (1918-2000) in 1948, soon after the first Holden was released. Maurie later brought his sons Alan, Robert and Brian into the business. F H Stevens Motors started in North Balwyn at a similar time and in 1982 was taken over by the Costello brothers, with Robert as General Manager. Members of the Costello family have been around the Surrey Hills area for many decades. Maurie’s parents Thomas Maurice and Mabel Isabel Costello lived at 43 Box Hill Crescent, Mont Albert North. Thomas was a cattle dealer and related to the Costellos of Costello’s Jersey Dairy (demolished) in Mont Albert Road, Balwyn. Prior to starting the business Maurie is listed as a market gardener living with his parents in Box Hill Crescent. He married Mavis Jean Guillerme in 1942. Surrey Motors and Surrey Panels are well known businesses serving the Surrey Hills community for decades.A small booklet, yellow in colour, designed to fit in the glove box of a car. A postcard from Kristiania, which is the former name of Oslo, Norway. The title says 'Kristiania. Stortinget og Grand Hotel'. The Stortinget is the name of the parliament building, which is the building on the right of the picture. The Grand Hotel is on the left. The postmark is 1924 which is before Kristiania was renamed Oslo in 1925. The link to Legacy is not known. There are many postcards in the collection from different times and people.This postcard has an aesthetic and historical significance, the perfect handwriting shown on the back of the postcard certainly represents a significant way of traditional handwriting used at that time. In 1928 a footbridge was erected to link Kew with the public golf course across the Yarra. The total cost of construction came to 250 pounds and the bridge became known as Kane's Bridge. During the 1934 floods the bridge was washed downstream, and was subsequently rebuilt. The present form of the bridge resembles the earlier bridge which crossed from the Yarra Bend Asylum to Kew, further upstream. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. The link with Legacy is not known (TBC) but presumably one or more of these men became Legatees or they were junior legatees prior to their war service.Many junior legatees enlisted in the services in the second World War. A search of the Dictionary of Biography returned the names of thirty-two individuals with a connection to Kew, who were claimed to be supporters, members or opponents of the Communist Party of Australia. Some were only linked to communism by reputation. The historian, Geoffrey Serle, in the entry on Vance Palmer (1885-1959) wrote that: ‘From 1942 he was a member of the Commonwealth Literary Fund's advisory committee and from 1947 to 1953 chairman; he suffered despicable allegations that he was a communist’ (Serle, 1988). Serle also noted that Palmer, a liberal socialist of the broad left, was defended by R.G. Menzies. Others were linked through marriage. Gwendolyn Kent Hughes (1889-1965), the third daughter of Wilfred Kent Hughes, was married to Victor Reginald Lloyd (1895-1964) in 1930 in Holy Trinity Church. Lloyd ‘... had strong ties to the trade union movement and belonged to the Communist Party of Australia’ (Barbara Falk, 2000).Single page flyer used in a City of Kew election for Studley Ward protesting about Rate Increases in the Ward. This album contains photographs of a family, (the Horns of ‘Wildwood’, Warrnambool) and other photographs of Warrnambool – the foreshore, the Soldiers’ Memorial, the Breakwater, the Hopkins River, Liebig and Timor Streets etc. It has been made by a member of the Horn family and given as a Christmas present to other members of the family. Charles James Horn came to Australia in 1881and was a tutor to the Barber family of ‘Staywood Park’, Wangoom. He and his wife Emma then worked a property at Cudgee before settling in Warrnambool at ‘Wildwood’ in North Warrnambool. One of their sons, Charles Bernard Horn married Margaret Cairns in 1916 but died in 1927. Another son, Leslie, was killed in World War One. This little album is of great interest because it contains photographs of the Horn family and other photographs of views in Warrnambool. It is therefore of considerable historical interest and will be very useful to researchers. As it is a handmade item it is also of interest because it is an example of the sort of homemade items made as presents at a time (the late 1920s) when finances for something more expensive may not have been available. These are two items which are believed to be linked. One is an envelope marked ‘C.J. Horn, Wildwood, Warrnambool’ and the other is a blue-covered homemade album of photographs bound with red wool. The front cover has ‘Warrnambool’ written in red ink and the back of the front cover is stamped ‘Ralph Barnes, Chemist, Warrnambool’. There are 22 sepia-coloured photographs of a family (the Horns) and other views of Warrnambool. All have a label on the back.
