Set of two drawings (BA-T8-8100/1 and BA-T8-8100B) showing the installation of tail lights on SEC tramcars and modifications to the battery/trolley pole relay and battery. Both are dated 15/11/1949 and signed by the Manager Ballarat Branch. Sandhurst and Electric Tramways Company introduced the first trams to Bendigo in June 1890. These were battery operated trams but it soon became obvious that the battery life was unable to copy with Bendigo's hilly terrain. The trams were converted to steam in 1892. In 1899 the tramways were sold to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and in 1903 the trams were converted to electricity. After WW1 the SEC was formed and took over the running of the trams. With the increased usage of cars, patronage of the trams began to drop off after WW2. In 1972 the tramways closed as a commuter service. Recovered by the donor, with approval of the Depot Foreman, from the wreckage in the SEC Ballarat yard from the demolished Tram No. 20 that was involved in a collision on 16/9/1970. One of the support members, near the bell striker has been broken through and the area where it was secured to the roof of the tram at the same end has been bent. Cloth backed off white paper ticket with black printing, used for a Scholar's under 15 years, monthly tickets with a large rectangle for an expiry date stamp and printed conditions of use. Has space for the student's name, address and school to be written in. Used by Shirley Bosworth. The ticket was found behind a tram sand box and was most likely lost by the holder. It was in an almost inaccessible position and recovered when the sand box had to be removed for maintenance, along with other tickets. Used SEC 2/6 weekly ticket, ticket numbers B 209600. Originally printed and stapled into blocks of 20 tickets. The ticket is printed on a manila 210gsm card and printed using red ink to give day numbers, monthly, week number, transfers, and day of the week, excluding Sunday. Numbered on the right end of the ticket. Static number (1 - 7) on left indicates maybe the day of the issue. The ticket has been nipped in the day spaces 8 times and has been nipped for the month of April and week 1. On the rear of the ticket is the details of the ticket use, allowing the passenger one return journey between City and section 3 or 4. Not available on Sundays. The ticket was located on a tram behind a sandbox during maintenance works.
