In the 1800s, the stereoscope was the only way to view with world in 3-D. A viewer would look through the lenses of the stereoscope's eyepiece to a card called a stereograph. On the stereograph, two of the same image were printed side by side, which when viewed through the stereograph transformed the one dimensional images into relatively life-like representations. A popular form of entertainment among the middle classes in Europe and America, people could use a stereoscope to view images of real faraway places, or fantastical magic scenes. The first patented stereo viewer was invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1838, and remained a favoured leisure activity until the advent of cinema in the 1930s. This object contributes to our understanding of social life, leisure and entertainment in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history. The first transistor radio (the Regency TR-1) was produced by Regency Electronics in cooperation with Texas Instruments in 1954. Transistor 4 , the AWA transistor radio was manufactured by Amalgamated Wireless Australasia Limited (AWA), Australia's largest and most prominent twentieth century producer of radios, televisions, audio and telecommunications equipment. Transistor radios went on to become the most popular electronic communication device of the 1960s and 1970s. Billions of transistor radios are estimated to have been sold worldwide between the 1950s and 2012. They were exceptionally popular amongst young people in Australia due to their portability, allowing them to be taken wherever you wanted to gather with friends or, due to the headphone attachment, without disturbing those around you. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The 1920's brought many changes to social life in Australia after the austerity of the war years. This was reflected in many cultural activities including music and dance. In the latter years of the decade ,this was evident in the new dance craze of the "Yale Blues" and the "Heebie Jeebie". Young people were eager to learn the latest music and dance steps. Everything needed to support these new trends could be purchased from "Blake's Busy Bazaar and Music Shop in Dean Street, Albury. Peter Wesley Blake, born in Ontario, Canada in 1860, immigrated to Australia in 1881. He moved to Albury in 1896 after purchasing the news agency and stationery business of Messrs. TF Hughes & Co. Described as ‘enterprising’, his store named Blake’s Busy Book Bazaar, stocked “everything required in books, newspapers, stationery, leather and fancy goods, music, musical instruments etc”. Blake sold the store in 1912 to Arthur Hewish who retained the name of the store. It operated with a variety of different owners until 1941.This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. The Country Women’s Association of Victoria was formed 12 March 1928 and today has over 5,600 members. Its original aim was to improve conditions by community service, more especially as they affect the welfare of women and children. The Wodonga CWA branch was formed in 1934 and has been an active group in the community until the present day. The CWA provided gathering opportunities for rural women and quickly became renowned for their street stalls, catering at Agricultural Shows and social events including debutante balls, handicraft classes and cooking demonstrations. Today they have become even more than that, participating in and organising a wide range of activities and initiatives in the community, always with the focus of service to others. The CWA is of significance on a local, state and national level as a critical service group. They conduct a range of social, educational and services throughout Australia with an initial focus on the support of rural women and children. Image of the newly opened Mentone Picture Theatre located on Point Nepean Road in Mentone. Local picture theatres abounded in the in the suburbs of Kingston from the 1920s through to the late 1950s. The New Mentone Picture Theatre was dreamt up and developed by Albert Lydford who along with other promoters, formed a company that provided the finance for the erection of a large cinema right at the junction of Balcombe Road and Point Nepean Road. The New Mentone Picture Theatre operated in competition with a council owned facility on Brindisi Street and within three years of opening, the council theatre was closed. The New Mentone Theatre flourished until the late 1950s. It offered three changes of program each week. Two movies screened on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesday a new bill went on for just one night, and then the main feature of the week, a movie the likes of Casablanca, was shown from Thursday through to Saturday. During its heyday there were full houses almost weekly. Saturday night shows were often booked out in advance and some families had permanent bookings at weekends. Locals treated the place as a centre of social activity, a venue for an enjoyable night out that did not involve great expense or long travel times. The Mentone Life Saving Club was formed in 1920 when the newly created City of Mordialloc (now the Kingston City Council) donated two bathing boxes to the newly formed Mentone Swimming and Life Saving Club on the site to the south of the former Mentone Pier. The Life Saving Club raised funds to build a new Clubhouse on the site and this was officially opened in December 1928 with the first Carnival Day of January 1929.The booklet contains black and white photographs of members and officials of the club. Huntingdale Golf club was the site of many social events for Legatees and Widows clubs. This appears to be an annual major fundraising golf day. An article in the Answer in 1993 says that the association with the Huntingdale golf club began in 1933 and over the years over $255,000 has been raised for Legacy. The Open Mixes Foursomes is usually held in December and the Ladies Day is annually in October. A special luncheon was held for World War I widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Legatees include L/- Lucky Luscombe and L/- George Woodward as waiters and L/- Salty Saltmarsh making a speech. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. The note with these photos says it was 1996. And the widow featured in Answer article in October 1996 is in these photos wearing the knitted beret. A group of widows at exercise classes in a pool at Melbourne City Baths. Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows for many years and the swim classes were very popular. The instructor for many years was Betty Luders. In one photo she can be seen at the poolside, that photo was printed on then cover of the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter in July 1991. Betty was often coerced into helping fill in at some of Pat Hanna's performances entertaining the troops, as well as assisting Enez Domec Carre with the Miss Victoria pageants at the Windsor Hotel in the 1950s. Widows are conducting a sale of craft items in a shopping arcade. It is possible the items sold were those made for the annual Art and Craft Exhibitions. The Legacy signs say "Legacy caring for Australia's biggest family". The trading tables are outside a Boyles Sweets shop and a Franklins No Frills supermarket in an unknown shopping centre. Boyles Sweets closed down by July 1993 so it was before then. Names unknown. Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who helped launch the 1990 Legacy week as she was the oldest Legacy widow and had reached 101 years of age. She was taken to the new building at 101 Collins St to promote Legacy Week. She arrived in a Rolls Royce with Legatee Peter Boulter and was given flowers and chocolates. Photos show them on a tour of the building which at the time was going to be the tallest in Melbourne.
